It’s hard to believe that almost two months have gone by since we held the Sendera HOA Board election! We’ve made a great deal of progress with respect to community related activities. Some of these include implementation of the National Night Out program, reviving our Neighborhood Watch program, establishing a relationship with our Circle C neighbors, joining OHAN (Oakhill Association of Neighborhoods), being proactive with the City of Austin (neighborhood speed enforcement and commercial development activities), and the installation of washer pits at the pool. Many thanks to Tom Z. for his contribution to the washer pits! We’ve also streamlined communications with Real Manage, our community management company. Residents should still submit Deed Restriction Violations (DRVs) to Real Manage. All other ideas/questions/concerns should be submitted to the appropriate committee chairperson. The committee chairperson will then take appropriate action, involve the corresponding committee members as required and respond in a timely fashion. We feel that this process should help improve communication flow within the community and address issues as quickly as possible. What activities are we planning to support next? We are investigating installing Wi-Fi at the pool. Thanks to Mel F. for a great idea and Tom Z. for his assistance in this project. We are also taking measures to minimize pool closures due to contamination and investigating making the pool available seven days a week. Another challenge we’re addressing is the filters at the pool. The pool is at that age where replacing the filters is a must, and we’re weighing all options so as to minimize the expense to the HOA. There are a number of other activities that we will report on as time goes on. Last, but certainly not least… we need volunteers for the various committees that we have in place. A small amount of each resident’s time can have a positive impact on the neighborhood! Please feel free to contact the chairperson of the committee and/or activity you’re interested in volunteering for… they can answer any questions you may have. Have a safe and enjoyable summer! Update on the New Development at Slaughter and Sendera Mesa by Barbara Richardson, Community Relations Committee Chair Utility Markings You might have noticed some colored, spray-painted utility markings at the intersection of Slaughter and Sendera Mesa. After much investigation, I’ve been told the markings are in preparation for preventative maintenance on a gas pipeline on the south side of Slaughter. It should be about a four-hour job and will be done during low traffic hours. I was assured that it has nothing to do with the new development planned for this corner. Reduced Speed Limits and House Bill 87 (HB 87) HB 87 gives city governments the authority to set speed limits at 25 mph on streets that are 35 ft. wide or less. Sendera will be one of the first neighborhoods to benefit from this new law. The City estimates that, around October 2006, new signs will be posted making the speed limit 25 mph on Hoffman Drive from Ovalla Drive (at the east end of Hoffman Drive) to 60 feet east of Corran Ferry Drive. The rest of Hoffman is ineligible because it is too wide. (A kind resident validated this by measuring the width himself just to make sure we couldn’t take advantage of any construction errors). However, 30 mph signs will be installed where the 25 mph section ends for drivers traveling westbound on Hoffman. Another 30 mph sign will be placed just east of Sendera Mesa for eastbound drivers. This will avoid confusion with the two speeds. While in the area, the City will also install 30 mph speed limit signs on Copano just north and south of Davis. In the past, when APD issued tickets on these streets, they possibly would not stand up in court because there are no posted speeds. Not any more. Speeders beware!!! The New Development Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods (OHAN) has graciously arranged a meeting for a few members of Sendera’s Board of Directors to discuss current and future traffic concerns with the City Manager. Again, we are not trying to block the development already planned in our area. That battle is done. We can try, however, to mitigate the effects that the development will have on our neighborhood. SenderaUpdate on New Development - (Continued from Cover Page) of the newsletter so I will report the outcome in the September edition. In addition to daily traffi c, one primary issue for discussion will be lane closures on Slaughter once construction of the new development begins. Lane closures will further congest the Mopac/Slaughter intersection, and thus make it even more attractive to cut through Sendera to get Northbound onto Mopac. This does not even take into account the dump trucks, materials delivery trucks, utilities, etc. that will be coming in and out of Sendera during the construction phase. Remember that they can use our streets as long as they have a delivery address. Many longtime residents experienced this during early construction for the subdivision. I am currently working with City of Austin Engineering to get the prints for the original construction of our streets as it relates to weight-bearing loads, expected volume at which they were designed, etc.

Sendera Barbecue Cook-off and Fair The Sendera Barbecue Cook-off and Fair

held Sunday May 28 over by the pool was fabulous and well attended. A

red, white, and blue parade down Sendera Mesa kicked off the day, followed by a 1 mile Fun Run through the neighborhood. The Cook-off and Fair featured 7 teams competing in several

categories and over 10 vendors selling their wares. Children’s activities included an infl atable obstacle course, moon walk and train ride. Sendera resident, Magda Acuna and her band entertained the crowd with great tunes for hours. Barbecue teams worked hard all day in hopes of winning the coveted titles of “Best” in their categories. Thankfully, the Manchaca Volunteer Fire Department chose the “Best” winners, as all of the food was delicious. The People’s Choice Award was voted on by residents. And the winners are…….2006 Barbecue Cook-Off Winners Best Brisket 3 J’s B Smokin, Jake Bell Best Ribs 3 J’s B Smokin, Jake Bell Best Chicken 3 J’s B Smokin, Jake Bell Best Sausage Perkins Pride, Rick Perkins Best BBQ Sauce ShanShar Plum Good, The Housemans Best Rub Bad Barbecue, Greg Johnson Best All American Fumb Ducks, JR Vera & Tom Zymowski Best Dogs Sendera, Jerry Riley People’s Choice Fullers Fire, Mel Fuller A BIG thank you to all of the recreation committee volunteers, cook-off teams, vendors, and attendees for the role played in making the event a success and bringing the neighborhood together. Often, residents do not get a chance to read the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (DCCR) thoroughly. This results in unintentional violations, which can create awkward situations that can be expensive for both the Association and the individual lot owner to rectify. To help avoid these situations the Sendera Architectural Committee (AC) has put together some guidelines addressing the most commonly asked questions regarding the DCCR. The guidelines presented here are not intended to replace the DCCR or the written approval of the AC, but to assist the resident in complying with DCCR.Question: I see some people putting their garbage cans in their back yards and some people leave them on the side of their house behind a big bush. Is there a rule about where to keep it? What the DCCR says: Section 3.07 titled “Rubbish and Debris” states the following:“Refuse, garbage, and trash shall be kept at all times in covered containers, and such containers shall be kept within enclosed structures or appropriately screened from view.”Ways to Comply:

1) Fence - Placing your container behind the existing privacy fence is an easy and inexpensive alternative that does not require AC approval. 2) Garage - Keeping your garbage container in your garage is an inexpensive solution that does not require AC approval. 3) Landscaping – Foliage screens can be an inexpensive way to not only screen your garbage container, but it also adds greenery to the yard. This solution does not require AC approval, but it is recommended. 4) Fence Enclosure – The AC recommends a structure constructed as follows: “ An area surrounded by a six (6) foot high wood privacy fence, constructed of material compatible with the home’s existing fencing material, where the area is against the side or rear wall of the residence (with no roof) and is no larger than four (4) feet deep and six (6) feet wide. If the opening to the enclosure faces the street or if your neighbors on the side or rear of your home can see the garbage container when it is inside the fenced enclosure, the enclosure should have a gate.” This solution does require AC approval.

Garden SpotlightPurple Fountain Grass

(Pennisetum setaceum Rubrum)

Nice specimen of Purple Fountain Grass can be seen at 4701 Cockrell Ct.

Purple fountain grass is not a native grass but it is so pretty it’s hard not to include it in your landscape some place. This plant can be grown in pots or in the ground. It is not usually winter-hardy in our area unless you give it good protection but it will occasionally come back from the roots. The fi ne foliage and fl uffy, purple fl ower spikes bring both texture and color to the garden. Regular watering is important but don’t over water. The fl ower spikes make nice additions to cut fl ower arrangements.

Beat The Heat Before It Beats You

(Continued on pg. 15)

Keeping cool when the weather is hotIt’s summertime and you head out for a run. Before you even fi nish the fi rst mile, your body feels as though it might ignite from the heat. It’s not your imagination. Fifteen minutes into your run and your body temperature could be as high as 5° F above normal. If you were to continue at this pace, fatigue and heat illness would no doubt take over. Strategies to protect yourself from heat illnessThe above scenario doesn’t have to happen. Drinking enough fl uid, whether it be water or a sports drink, is imperative for exercising in hot or humid weather. Maintenance of body fl uids is essential to maintaining proper body temperature. Sweat dispels heat through your skin. If you let your body become dehydrated, you’ll fi nd it much more diffi cult to perform even the lightest of workouts. But don’t wait until you’re thirsty to start replenishing those fl uids. Chances are, by the time you actually feel thirsty, your body is well on its way to becoming severely dehydrated. The following strategies will help you protect yourself from the onset of heat illness:

1. HydrationFluid replenishment before, during and after exercise is essential to avoid progressive dehydration. Always consume more fl uids than you think you need before and after exercise, and strive to drink six to eight ounces of fl uid every 15 to 20 minutes during exercise. 2. Exercise IntensityYou should probably reduce the intensity of your workout, particularly the fi rst few times you are exposed to higher temperatures. 3. TemperatureUse the heat stress index table to determine the risk of exercising at various combinations of temperature and humidity. While a 90° F outdoor temp is relatively safe at 10 percent humidity, the heat stress of 90° F at 50 percent humidity is the equivalent of 96° F. When the heat stress index rises above 90° F, you may want to consider postponing your exercise session until later in the day. Or, plan ahead, and beat the day’s heat by working out early in the morning. 4. FitnessPhysical training and heat acclimation can increase your blood volume, helping to regulate body temperature more effectively.

Sendera Interestingly, the acclimatization process can be completed in 7 to 14 days of repeated heat exposure. However, you must always continue to drink fl uids before, during and after exercise. 5. Clothing Wear minimal clothing to provide greater skin surface area for heat dissipation. Your clothing should be lightweight, loose fi tting, light colored to refl ect the sun’s rays, and of a material that absorbs water, such as cotton. 6. RestKnow when to say ‘no’ to exercise. Using common sense is your best bet for preventing heat stress when Mother Nature turns up the heat. Heat sensation risk of heat injury • 90° - 105° Possibility of heat cramps • 105° - 130° Heat cramps or heat exhaustion likely. Heat stroke possible. • 130°+ Heat stroke a defi nite risk.
