Sendataki Falls After World War II, the Japanese National Railways (the predecessor of today’s JR) announced a plan to electrify all of the country’s railroads. The Senzan Line was selected as a testing ground for alternating current (AC) electrification, which has several economic advantages. Tests of AC electrification began in 1954, with testing of AC electric locomotives between Kita-Sendai and Sakunami beginning in August of the following year. Following the success of these tests, Japan’s first AC electrified railroad service began between Sendai and Sakunami in September 1957. Later, power alternating technologies were tested and prototype AC/DC locomotives were created in order to provide direct service through sections on AC power and those on DC power. The data and technologies gained through this would later be leveraged in the AC electrification of main lines and the development of new rail stock. In addition, the discovery that AC electrification was well-suited for high-speed operation and lead to the development of the Shinkansen, or Bullet Train. Not only is it used by commuters in the greater Sendai area, but it also offers a means of access to picturesque tourist areas along the line. The Many Faces of the Senzan Line A railroad connecting Sendai and Yamagata had been a wish of the people of Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures since the Meiji Era. However, achieving this goal was not easy with the Ou mountain range standing in the way. Despite this major hurdle, the section of the Senzan East Line connecting Sendai and Ayashi was completed in 1929, and the section connecting Ayashi and Sakunami was completed in 1931. In 1933, the Senzan West Line connecting Yamadera and Uzen-Chitose (Yamagata) was completed. Finally, after much difficult construction work, the Senzan Line was fully opened in 1937 upon the completion of the Senzan Tunnel. The Sakunami-Yamadera section was electrified by Direct Current (DC) power from the beginning as traveling through the long tunnel with a steam locomotive was out of the question. Sendai Sta. After World War II, the Japanese National Railways (the predecessor of today’s JR) announced a plan to electrify all of the country’s railroads.

Birthplace of AC Electrified Rail in Japan

Currently the Senzan Line is the trunk link connecting the respective prefectural capitals ofSendai and Yamagata Cities . Not only is it used by commuters in the greater Sendai area, butit also offers a means of access to picturesque tourist areas along the line.

The Many Faces of the Senzan Line

A railroad connecting Sendai and Yamagata had been a wish of the people of Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures since the Meiji Era.
