Wi-Fi
Welcome to world ofwireless
A radio technology that networks the devices. Refers to wireless LAN product based on IEEE 802.11
specification
Provide easy connections to internet and business
networks while travelling.
The main attraction feature of this technology is that it
can provide wireless broadband connection within a
specific geographic boundaries 4

The Wi-Fi TechnologyThe Wi-Fi technology uses radio technologies to
transmit and receive data at high speed .

IEEE 802.11b In late 1999
Operates at 2.4 GHz
4.6 Mbps (actual speed)
100-150 feet range
Most popular ,least expensive
Interference from mobile phones and bluetooth
devices which can reduce the transmission speed.

IEEE 802.11a In 2001
Operates at 5 GHz
15-20 Mbps (actual speed)
50-75 feet range
More expensive
Not compatible with 802.11b

How Wi-Fi Works(continue) Basic concept is same as walkie talkie.
A Wi-Fi hotspots is created by installing an access
point to an internet connection. An access point act as base station .
When Wi-Fi enabled device encounters a hotspots the
device can then connect to that network wirelessly.
A single access point can support upto 30 users.

AP based topology Clients communicate through access point.
BSA-RF coverage provided by an AP
It connects PCs by an AP
It consists of 2 or more base stations.
It includes 10-15% overlapping to allow roaming.

14/22
Peer to Peer topology
AP is not required Client devices within a cell can communicate directly
with each.
It is useful for setting up of a wireless network quicklyand easily

Point to multipoint bridge
topology Use line-of-sight(LOS) Used to connect a LAN between buildings rich are miles
apart
Range varies based on the type of wireless bridge and
antenna used as well as the environmental conditions.

Wi-Fi v/s Bluetooth
Wi-Fi uses a lot of power and has a much larger
range, whereas Bluetooth has a very small range and
uses very little power.
Wi-Fi has a considerable speed advantage overBluetooth
Wi-Fi has a maximum data rate of 54 mbps whereas
Bluetooth technology, which has a maximum data rateof 3 mbps.
Wi-Fi is the name for the 802.11 wireless LAN
whereas Bluetooth is the name for 802.15 PAN.

Advantage Wi-Fi uses unlicensed radio spectrum
Allows LANs to be setup with cabling.
Reduce associated costs of network connection Products are extensively available in the market
Prices are considerably lower
Wi-Fi networks can support roaming. Allows mobile users to move from one access point to
another.

Disadvantage1.Wi-Fi include interference which causes the users
device to no longer function.
2.Operational limitations are not consistent worldwide.3.Power consumption is fairly high
4.Degradation in performance.
5.Wi-Fi networks have limited range.

Scope of Wi-Fi
1.Provide greater and longer connection ranges with faster
transfer speeds.
2.Allows users to freely surf on the web, check and send
email
3.Not only used around internet cafes, coffee houses/shops,
and airports around the world .
4.In the futures we would also see better securities measuresin protecting data.
5.Better anti-virus and firewall protections
