DEFINITION• Aspirin is a medicine that relieves
pain and reduces fever
• Europe in 1899
• German chemist named Felix Hoffman as a treatment for his father's arthritis.
DESCRIPTION• Aspirin, also known as acetyl salicylic acid
acid
• Aspirin belongs to a group of drugs called salicylates
• Aspirin is quickly absorbed into the blood stream and provides rapid and relatively long-lasting pain relief.
• Aspirin may be used as a first-line
treatment for a heart attack
PRECAUTIONS• Aspirin should not be given to the children
• Aspirin can cause Reye's syndrome, a life-threatening condition that affects the nervous system and liver
• Those who survive may have permanent brain damage.
• Pregnant women
PURPOSE• Aspirin is still used to relieve many
kinds of minor aches and pains—headaches,
• Toothaches,
• Muscle pain
• Menstrual cramps,
• Joint pains associated with arthritis
HISTORY• Medicines containing
derivatives of saliclic acid
• Aspirin's popularity declined after the release of paracetamol (acetaminophen) in 1956 and ibuprofen in 1969.
VETERNARY USES• Aspirin has been used to treat pain and arthritis
in veterinary medicine
• In DOG’S
• HORSES have also been given aspirin for pain relief.
• Aspirin should only be used in animals under the direct supervision of a veterinarian
DISADVANTAGES Upset stomach, Heartburn, Loss of appetite small amounts of blood in the
stool Fever, Vision problems, liver damage Thirst, stomach ulcers, bleeding
