AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL From the Principal As we come to the end of our second semester for 2019, there are indeed many highlights for our school to celebrate, particularly those that have offered the children experiences that have further developed their learning. As you will have read about in School Newsletters, on the School Blog and in Class Blogs, our teachers have provided the children with so many wonderful learning programmes throughout this semester. There has been a solid focus on literacy and numeracy with particular focus on reading, phonics, spelling, word identification, oral language, writing and problem solving. This semester, we’ve celebrated so many wonderful events that have covered an enormous number of learning areas. Faction and Interschool Athletics Carnivals, Wattle Day, NAIDOC Week, our extraordinary Student Fete, My School Rules, the choirs’ visit to Donovan Village, amazing Italian and Music Assemblies, Graduation Ceremony and Dance, Graduation Lunch, Super Scientist Challenge, Swimming Lessons, Year 6 Camp to Kalgoorlie and 3 days of wonderful Dance Parties. What an incredible semester!! The Literacy Pro also made a big impact on children’s enthusiasm to read books and to answer the quizzes with over 160,094,604 million words being read. This is most important in assisting with comprehension development. The Principal’s Challenges for all year levels have also provided the children with the motivation to improve their personal achievement in elements of literacy and numeracy, together with aspects of general knowledge. Thank you to all the teachers who have spent many hours planning, organising and coordinating a wide range of programmes this semester to ensure that the children at our school receive such a stimulating and enriched learning programme. The Principal’s Volunteer Reading Program has also made a significant impact on the reading skills of our children. Many thanks to the parents who have volunteered their time for this program and we look forward to it expanding further next year. Our Dance Parties held this week were enjoyed by all the children and many parents, grandparents and families who attended. Despite the hot weather conditions, the children showed off their amazing dance skills learnt throughout the term in their dance classes with Humphrey’s Dance School. I was so impressed by the children from every year level and their skill level, their coordination, fitness and rhythm. It was wonderful to see all the parents (and grandparents) join their children on the dance floor and get into the ‘swing of things’. Humphrey’s Dance School also awarded many children with Dance Medals and Dancing Scholarships for their exceptional skills. Class Presentation Awards were presented to selected children by their class teachers from Kindy to Year 5. Congratulations to all the 2019 Class Award recipients for your hard work throughout the year. Special thanks to Mrs McIlwraith for her wonderful coordination. It was so greatly appreciated by everyone. Thank you also to the P&C for providing many bottles of water/cool drinks to keep parents well quenched in between their dances! 19th December 2019 The Official Newsletter of Wattle Grove Primary School Term 4, Issue 20 Semester 2 End of Year Dance Parties December 19 Last day for students & Ringing of the Bell @ 2pm for Year 6 February 3 First day for students 2020 Early close every Tuesday at 2.30pm School Security 1800 177777 9264 4771 9264 4632 31 CLASS ALLOCATIONS SMS Message will be sent on Friday 31st January 2020 - advising parents of their child’s class room for 2020 YEAR 6 LEAVERS— RINGING OF THE BELL

It’s another school year over and it has been another big one at Wattle Grove and as usual we have had another very good year. It all culminates with the Dance Parties and Presentations at the end of Term Four. For the Graduating Year Six Students, it is with the Ringing of the Bell in the afternoon of the last day. There have been many successes to celebrate. One was the first time we have done NAPLAN and ICAS Testing online and for us it went very well, with just a few minor concerns we were able to quickly resolve. It was the first time running the Graduation Ceremony and Dance on a 40 degree day. Luckily, the school was able to hire some air conditioners, to supplement those at Camp Wattle Grove and it was another great night for all the graduates , their parents and families. It was the second time the school has held the Student Fete and this was another very successful event, with the students planning, making and selling their wares. It was a great insight into how a business works and some classes did very well. It is the fourth time in a row, Wattle Grove has won the Interschool Athletics. Another great effort by all the team and Mrs Oliver and Mr Sherlock. Congratulations again to all of them. It is the fifth time in a row we have won the “My School Rules’ Competition, run by the Darling Range Learning Community of schools. Well done to the team and to Mrs Lowther and Mr Sanderson, for getting the team trained to perform so well on the day. Those are just a few of the highlights for the year and, of course, there has been a lot of great learning and other things happening across the year, as well. Best wishes for a great Christmas and New Year, but remember to stay safe. We want everyone to come back to Wattle Grove next year and all the Year Sixes to have a great start at high school. Best wishes for a great holiday break.

Stuart Meachem

At this time of the year, it is always sad to have to say goodbye not only to our Year 6 children but also to staff who will not be returning to Wattle Grove for the 2020 school year. Many thanks to the following teachers for their tremendous work and dedication: Mrs Wales, Mrs Nair, Ms Grafham, Mrs Haug, Mrs White and Mrs Harders. We have certainly enjoyed and appreciated having you in our school and wish you every success for the future. As the 2019 school year draws to a close, I would like to say a very big thank you to our School Community. You have been once again amazing in your support of our school and it is through this support and the dedication of our staff that we continue to provide quality learning opportunities for the children in a wonderful school environment. Special thanks to the School Board and the P&C for the tremendous support you have provided throughout 2019. Strong and supportive parent and community leadership is a big part of ensuring the ongoing success of our school and we certainly value that. To the many parent volunteers who assisted us throughout the year and joined the staff at the Parent Volunteer Morning Tea last week, I once again extend my sincere thanks for always being there to assist. You make a significant difference to our school and to the education of the children. Next year, we can all look forward to another year of great achievements.

On Friday the 6th of December, Room 16 and 19 had their ‘Gratitude’ themed class assembly. With gratitude being a key value for the school this year, the classes focused on what it is to be grateful and how we can all display a ‘gratitude attitude’. A big thank you to Room 16 and 19 parents, who helped at home by rehearsing scripts with their children, a huge thank you to Mrs Stewart for creating our wonderful backdrop lettering and lastly, a great thank you to Mr Sanderson for setting us up on the projector screen and sorting out the microphones. It was a fantastic assembly and all of the children performed very well!

Merit Certificates - Senior Room 16 & 19 Assembly

Wednesday the 11th of December saw the presentation of awards for the Semester Two ‘Super Scientist’ competition. At this ceremony, all the year level finalists were presented with a certificate of merit for their excellent work. We then presented the overall year level winners with a medallion and science prizes. Following this, we invited each of these winners to deliver their presentation to the assembly. I think it is safe to say that everyone present was completely blown away by the outstanding quality of presentations. There were six presenters, from Year One through to Year Six, and what an incredible job they did! Here were our overall ‘Super Scientists’ from Semester Two: YEAR ONE: Kate Belisario – ‘Dealing with e-waste’ YEAR TWO: Connor Lehman – ‘Propagating succulents’ YEAR THREE: Lily Mason – ‘The heart and circulatory system’ YEAR FOUR: Shreya Aleyas – ‘Fire’ YEAR FIVE: Samara Bailye – ‘Cockroaches’ YEAR SIX: Lina Wasim – ‘Emotions’ Our winners’ presentations were so amazing that it was hard to believe they were primary school students. They dazzled us with their depth of knowledge and their confident, engaging delivery. They are indeed a group of Superstars! Each year, the quality of our Super Scientist presentations just keeps getting better and better. We look forward

to seeing what the clever kids from Wattle Grove Primary School achieve in 2020!

SerahSerahSerahSerah Hello, my name is Serah Simon. I am a student in Room 22 with Mr Sanderson. I have been in Wattle Grove Primary School since Year 2 (5 years). I have two younger brothers who are in Yr 5 and Kindy. My parents come from India and we moved to Perth around 7 ½ years ago. Some of my favourite things to do are reading, art, badminton and dancing. I participate in these activities actively successfully. As a Student Representative, I strive to be the best I can. I am a responsible, polite and mature leader. My goals for being a good Student Representative is to improve on my public speaking and come up with lots of creative ideas for fundraisers. I have enjoyed working with the other Student Representatives.

RileyRileyRileyRiley Hi, my name is Riley and I was born on April 23, 2008. I started at Wattle Grove Primary eight years ago. I have one brother, Brayden, that I have never met. I live with my mum, as my dad lives overseas. Now that I have grown up, I am about to start the next level of my schooling. I like being at Wattle Grove Primary School was because: My teachers work hard to help me improve my Maths and English skills. Of the Faction and Interschool Carnivals that the school participates in. Of the way my friends are always on my side even when they don’t agree. As a Student Representative, I have performed many responsibilities. I have been involved in the setting up assemblies and packing away chairs. I have carried jobs such as Tidy Bags. I look forward to setting up events, for the whole school, to raise money for people in need.
