SELWYN IRRIGATORS relying on groundwater will be facing another tough summer ahead unless the district gets a major downpour in the next six weeks.

Groundwater levels are at historically low levels after a lack of significant rain-fall in recent winters led to low recharge of the aquifers.

HydroServices managing director Dr Tony Davoren said if there wasn’t a major downpour before September, farmers were likely to have to cut back their water takes in the next irrigation season “or else they will be sucking air.”

May and June had seen only about 110mm of rainfall – not enough to lead to groundwater recharge. Usually, be-tween mid-April and September 1, about 300mm would be required for good groundwater recharge.

“We’re in a very difficult position right now,” Mr Davoren said.

While low rainfall had caused the low groundwater levels, increased use of groundwater for agricultural use due to intensification of farming meant that re-

covery during recharge periods was less.“The effect on the groundwater is

that it takes away all its resilience,” Mr Davoren said.

Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee member and dairy farmer John Sunckell said the effects of a lack of rainfall on Selwyn’s farming community would be huge.

“That will put real pressure on ground-water takes,” Mr Sunckell said.

“For the majority of us sitting in the middle of the catchment, we could ef-fectively see water drop off the end of our pipes.” •Turn to page 3

IT’S ALL about rugby this week. Reporter Tom Doudney chatted to Lincoln co-coach Graham Hutchison after the team locked away the Murray Cooper Shield for the year on pages 8 and 9. Over the page, we chat to Rio-bound New Zealand Sevens team member Sam Dickson, who started his rugby at West Melton. Finally photographer Karen Casey caught all the action between Springston and Lincoln at the weekend on pages 12 and 15.

It’s school holidays and we would love to see your photos of kids having fun. Send them through to [email protected] and they may even be published. Meanwhile, Springston south resident Mike Glover and Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee chairman Allen Lim are our guest columnists.

Proposed Enrolment Scheme

In order to avoid the likelihood of future overcrowding, the establishment board of Lemonwood Grove School proposes to adopt an enrolment scheme, effective from the date of opening on 1 January, 2017.

Consequential amendments to the enrolment schemes of West Rolleston School, Rolleston School and Clearview Primary School are also proposed to take effect from this date.

The Lemonwood Grove School new enrolment scheme and consequent amendments to West Rolleston School, Rolleston School and Clearview Primary enrolment schemes are now open for community feedback.

Please note the important information below:

• Most boundary roads refer to both sides of the road with some exceptions for Lemonwood Grove and Clearview Primary. The ‘Roads map’ will show this distinction or check the written description of the zone which sits alongside the zone map.

• Clearview Primary School and Rolleston School enrolment schemes will include a ‘grand-parenting’ clause for families of currently ‘in-zone’ enrolled students, who find themselves ‘out of zone’ at the commencement of this scheme. The criteria around this arrangement are noted in the written enrolment scheme.

The enrolment scheme, which includes a precise description of the home zone, may be viewed at the school office of West Rolleston School, Rolleston School, Clearview Primary School, on each school website or at www.lemonwoodgrove.school.nz

In accordance with section 11H of the Education Act, 1989, the boards of each school are now undertaking community consultation.

Feedback comment is welcomed by the boards of the schools as below:

NewsGAMES AWARD FINALISTThe Hororata Highland Games has been selected as a finalist in the New Zealand Event Professionals national awards. The games have been nominated in the Best Community Event category of the awards. The winners will be announced in August.

CHARGES LIKELY Police have said charges are likely after a Rolleston man, 40, was accidentally shot in the leg by his hunting partner at Glenthorne Station, near Lake Coleridge, recently. The pair and a third man, all from Selwyn, were on a hunting trip when the incident happened. Senior Sergeant Tony Beaumont said one of the men had been unloading his rifle when it went off and hit his companion in the lower leg.

PREBBLETON TAVERN APPEALAn appeal by the Prebbleton Tavern against a Selwyn District Licensing Committee ruling preventing it from advertising its off-licence alcohol prices to passers-by will be heard on August 18. The case will be heard by the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority at the Christchurch District Court. Tavern owner Shannon Gilmore had argued that it wasn’t fair to limit advertising for its off-licence when supermarkets and other alcohol retailers were able to advertise more freely.

In Brief

•From page 1A recent report from

Environment Canterbury scientist Dr Brett Painter to the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee stressed the importance of the Central Plains Water scheme on reducing takes from groundwater.

“Abstraction of consumptive water from an already stressed groundwater system provides fur-ther stress on all that this system supports,” Dr Painter wrote.

“The recent introduction of high reliability alpine water from the Central Plains Water scheme has helped to right this imbal-ance, in particular through the replacement of deep groundwater abstraction in the Stage 1 com-mand area.”

Federated Farmers North Canterbury president Lynda Murchison said all farmers would be hoping for some good heavy rainfall in the winter but dry conditions were part of farming in Canterbury.

“The advantage about this is you actually know what the situ-ation is and if you know what the situation is, you can plan for it.”

BRAZEN THIEVES have been targeting rural companies in the Springfield area – in one case hitting the same place twice within a week.

The Springfield Lime Com-pany, Fulton Hogan and a logging company are among those which have reported thefts of fuel, vehicle batteries and other equipment in the last few weeks.

Springfield Lime Company site manager Matt Goulding said the thieves had done about $7000 worth of damage over two visits to the quarry.

In separate incidents within a week, 16 vehicle batteries, a radio and about 1000-litres of fuel had been taken.

The culprits were believed to have used a water tank on a trailer to take the fuel.

“Obviously, it’s not the smart-est people around who are doing this sort of thing but to come back twice is pretty silly,” Mr Goulding said.

Footage from the quarry has been supplied to police.

Fulton Hogan maintenance manager Steve Garbett said batteries, lamps, torches and other machinery had been

taken from a storage yard near Kowhai River.

Senior Constable Andy Grant said it was important for contractors to keep fuel and vehicles as secure as possible overnight.

“We would advise people with quarries, and farmers, if they have got things off the main road to shut and lock gates so people don’t have ac-cess up driveways and farms and isolated areas.”

Police wanted to hear from anyone who had seen any sus-picious vehicles in the Spring-field area late at night during recent weeks.

LONG serving district councillor Debra Hasson will stand again in October’s local body elections.

Cr Hasson has had a seat on the district council since 1995 and is now serving her seventh term.

She was elected when she was in her 30s, after a retiring councillor suggested putting her name forward.

“They called me the baby be-cause I was the youngest on the council,” said Cr Hasson.

Over the years, Cr Hasson has seen many changes in the area, noting the way Rolleston and Lincoln have grown so quickly and how the townships around Selwyn continue to change as more people move into the area.

She did not become a council-lor because of the pay. At the time she joined, the salary for a councillor was $3000 a year, now they receive $35,000.

“You do it because you’re pas-sionate about your community and what happens in the area,” she said.

Cr Hasson said that when she

first started, there was only one other female councillor.

Not much has changed 21 years on with Cr Hasson and Cr Sarah Walters still the only women on the counil.

However, Cr Walters is run-ning for the mayoralty only this year. If she is not elected, Cr Hasson will be the only female at the council table.

“I hope more females put their hands up to be on the council,” she said.

Cr Hasson is interested to see how the new set of councillors interact with each other.

She said this term’s council-lors have interacted really well together.

“I’ve been on [Selwyn] district councils when there have been separate A and B teams and I have been on some [Selwyn] councils when they have worked really well together. A large part of it is having respect for the other councillors,” she said.

While she is staying quite on whether she will run for the mayor, she plans to stay a district councillor for several more years.

Hasson to run for eighth term

Springston south resident Mike Glover responds to a Soap Box column by Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee chairman Allen Lim on water issues and quality in streams around Selwyn.

Allen points out that the zone committee’s focus is on water is-sues at a community level.

I live near the Selwyn Huts community where the pollution levels in the Selwyn River for both nitrates (animal effluent and ferti-liser run off) and E.coli have been consistently high for decades.

The last summer was miserable – with toxic algae from excessive effluent/fertiliser and high E.coli levels making both swimming or even paddling out of the question.

We are at the end of the line for pollution from the upper catch-ment. Its all got to go somewhere – to hear that the Liffey Stream could be diluted to lower nitrate levels is no solution at all – it will still end up in Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere where the Government (actually that’s me and you – fel-low taxpayers) is already going to spend millions cleaning up the pollution from farming over the next decades anyway.

Allen talks of the ‘nitrate chal-lenge’ – its more like a disaster and its only going to get worse. The ‘tough new rules for farmers’ he talks of are based on slack new rules in the National Objectives Framework for Water which allow for up to 10 times more nitrate in

our water than previous stand-ards. Even the ‘middle ground’ here is totally unacceptable.

Allen Lim responds to Mike Glover’s letter.

I share Mike’s frustration about the state of the Selwyn River.

It’s one of the reasons why I became involved in the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee.

Reading Mike’s comments, it is obvious to me that we, as a zone committee, have not been very good at telling the com-munity about what we are doing, resulting in misunderstandings. Contrary to Mike’s opinion, Targeted Stream Augmentation is definitely a way forward for healthy lowland steams.

We have successfully completed a trial of TSA at Boggy Creek. The next stage is to investigate the feasibility of catchment-wide TSA by bringing alpine water through existing stockwater races to target areas. TSA will become more necessary because with climate change, less rain is predicted to fall on the Canterbury Plains.

This will result in low flows and

worse water leading to greater potential for algal bloom – which is what Mike observed last year in the Selwyn River.

For Mike to call the situation a “disaster” is premature. I would save that word for the years to come – because things will get worse before they get better.

Make no mistake, the rules that now apply to farmers in Selwyn Waihora are some of the toughest in the country. Many farmers in the zone will need a consent to farm. Dairy farmers will need to reduce nutrient losses from their farms by 30 per cent.

The rules also include catch-ment limits for nitrogen losses from point source discharges – industrial processing activities and community sewerage.

The water problems in our zone have been decades in the making and it will be many years before we will see significant improve-ments. We need the community to be patient and come with us on the journey.

S. Slater, of Lincoln – With reference to your article in the Selwyn Times regarding a pos-sible swimming pool in Lincoln, I would very much support this project.

As a senior resident and weekly swimmer, I would certainly wel-come a pool closer to home, and feel that along with the growing community, university and local schools this would be well sup-ported and welcomed.

THREE TOURISTS who plunged 40m off a bluff in a car before landing on a railway embankment but walked away with minor injuries are lucky to be alive, police say.

A Japanese man, Chinese man and a French woman, all in their early 20s, were driv-ing between Springfield and Arthur’s Pass at about 8.30am on a recent Saturday morning when the Japanese man, who was behind the wheel, lost control of the vehicle.

Senior Constable Andy Grant said that although the Japanese man held an international drivers’ licence which allowed him to drive on New Zealand roads, police had now advised him to buy a New Zealand Road Code, study it and sit a New Zealand driver licence test.

A decision on whether any charges would be laid was yet to be made.

Senior Constable Grant said it was very fortunate that no one was killed and the incident was a great advertise-ment for the importance of wearing seat belts.

THE DISTRICT council needs more people to become rural fire fighters.

The Darfield Rural Fire Force was established last year and cur-rently has 12 members but they are looking for more to join their team.

There are four rural fire forces in Selwyn. They are located at Ar-thur’s Pass, Lake Coleridge, West Melton and Darfield.

Selwyn district principal rural fire officer Douglas Marshall said the district council wants to recruit more volunteers to cope

with more call-outs all year round, but especially during the summer when nor’west winds pick up.

“The amount of time volunteers spend attending to fires varies a lot throughout the year. Generally, call-outs in winter and spring-time are limited, while during a hot summer fire fighters can be very busy,” Mr Marshall said.

Fire fighters will receive training before joining the force and will continue to receive training during their time with the force.

For people intersted in signing up, call 318 8338.

SWIMMING FOR RIOSwimmers at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre have swam 8816km, which is 352,653 lengths of the pool, to help raise funds for a new St John ambulance station. The aim of the fundraiser is to swim the distance from Lyttelton to Rio de Janeiro by the time the Olympic Games start next month. Swimmers have 2949km left to go to raise as much money as they can before the games open.

CORRECTIONSLast week’s story about Selwyn properties being listed as potentially contaminated incorrectly stated that the programme was being carried out by Environment Canterbury on behalf of the district council. In fact, the Hazardous Activities and Industries List programme is being managed by ECan, with some assistance from the district council. Also last week, a news in brief about a potential earthquake memorial plaque on Telegraph Rd incorrectly referred to Malvern Community Board member Judith Pascoe as being the chairwoman. Jenny Gallagher is the board chairwoman and she made the comment attributed to Ms Pascoe.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONSThe Lincoln Envirotown Trust celebrated its 10th birthday recently. The trust was started in 2006, focusing on just Lincoln, but has now grown to cover more of Selwyn. Previous and current members of the trust gave speeches and spoke about what the trust does. Chairwoman Sam Rowland and founding member Sue Jarvis blew out the candles on the birthday cake.

ROLLESTON 150THThe organisers of Rolleston’s 150th anniversary are looking for sponsors and old photos to use in their displays as part of the celebrations planned for October. The photos and equipment will be given back after the celebrations are over. If anyone has photos or equipment, phone committee chairman Jeff Bland on 027 399 9206.

SELWYN AWARDSTickets are now on sale for the Sensational Selwyn Awards. The award winners will be announced at Lincoln Event Centre on July 30. Tickets cost $75 per person, and will be available online at www.iticket.co.nz or by phoning 0508 ITICKET.

THERE HAVE been 45 abatement notices and one infringement notice issued in the last two months to Canterbury water consent holders who hadn’t yet installed a required meter.

Environment Canterbury made contact in May and June with the 500 water consent holders who had not provided evidence they had installed a water measuring system.

Of these, 63 have since been deemed fully compliant with their consent conditions and the national regulations.

ECan regional manager implementation support Nadeine Dommisse said all of the 500 consent holders now either had an agreed action plan in place to install a water measuring device, or were aware they had 10 working days to provide evidence that action was being taken to avoid further enforcement action.

“What we have found is that once contacted, many people took action immediately or pro-vided evidence they had a plan in place to install the necessary equipment and systems,” she said.

About 5400 (or 90 per cent of the 5900 water consent holders in Canterbury) had already provided evidence they complied with the regulations.

All water consent holders with a take of 10l/s or more are required to measure their water takes and provide ECan with data on their daily water use.

•For more information on the

government’s regulations, and a full list of approved service providers visit the Environment Canterbury and Irrigation New Zealand websites.

TWO PUPILS – one from Shirley Intermediate and the other from St Albans School – were the voices behind a supermarket initiative to celebrate Maori Language Week.

Amiria Tikao, 12, and her younger sister Matakaea, 9, had their voices professionally re-corded in a sound studio to help SuperValue and FreshChoice customers better understand the Maori language.

The sisters were recorded pro-nouncing items such as apples, mushrooms, fish, milk, meat, kiwifruit and cheese, along with many others.

Amiria said it was a fun pro-ject to be involved with.

“It was really cool. It took about 45mins, so not very long . . . we got most of the words first time, which was good,” she said.

Local SuperValue and Fresh-Choice supermarkets then put posters up around their stores, with a QR code that customers could scan with their cell phone. The code led to a website where they could hear the two pupils correctly pronounce the word.

Amiria said she had not yet tested out the posters, but she would think about going in later.

SuperValue and FreshChoice brands manager Liz de Lange said that when the campaign was run last year, the QR codes were used thousands of times.

Our People

When did you first link up with the Lincoln rugby team?

1996, so 21 years ago.And you’ve been the coach

that whole time?I’ve had one or two years off. I

started off at under 13s actually and then under 11s and coached there basically ever since, gone right through to Colts and taken a lot of the senior boys right through from under 11s to seniors. What has it been like seeing guys

go from promising young players up to the higher level?

When players develop like that it gives you a bit of a buzz, to be fair, but more importantly seeing them develop as people, not necessarily just rugby players – it’s a little bit more about the people than just the rugby, really.

When did you first become coach

of the senior side?In 2011 to 2012 I coached them,

and then I gave that up to tour South Africa with the Chiefs. Then I helped out last year when they needed a bit of help and somehow or another got roped back into it this year.

When you say you helped out last year, what was your role then?

The appointed coach was away for a couple of extended periods and I was more than happy to fill in.

What was that you mentioned about touring with the Chiefs?

One of the boys I coached at rep level – because I not only coached at Lincoln, I have done a lot of Ellesmere and Canterbury Country coaching all the way through the grades as well – but one of the boys I coached, who first played his rugby at Lincoln, was Andrew Horrell who plays for the Chiefs. We’re good friends with the parents so my wife Pauline and I toured over there with him.

So you just sort of followed the team around as spectators?

Yeah, we were spectators but we were the only people touring with them so we got well looked after.

How many games did you go to over there?

Only two, they played the Stormers in Cape Town and the Kings in Port Elizabeth. That was back in 2013.

What brought you to Lincoln? We live at Weedons and it was just

one of those things where the kids were looking for a team to play and we ended up with them playing over at Lincoln.

What’s the team culture like at

Lincoln and has it changed much over the years?

The club culture is very solid. It has always been a good club to work with although I personally stay out of the politics but as far as the teams I have been lucky enough to coach, they have had good team culture, won a few championships here and there and just had some really good players.

Has Lincoln rugby always been pretty strong in the Selwyn district throughout that time?

It has had its ups and downs but al-ways been relatively strong. There are guys who are about 28 now who we took from under 11s right up to Colts – that’s Daryl Petheram and I. He’s the other coach at Lincoln. We have coached together for almost 20 years and him and I are the senior coaches at the moment.

Do you both share the head coach role or is one of you the assistant?

No, no, we both coach together. We have been coaching for a long time so we just get out there and enjoy coaching together and work with each other. We’ve won three senior titles and about 10 titles in total including junior stuff so we’ve been successful.

Do you ever disagree about things and how do you resolve that when you are coaching the same team?

We have debates, healthy debates over different things, and then we will always come to a resolution and get on with it. I don’t think we have ever had an argument to my knowledge, we just work through things. The team is always paramount and neither of us really have egos to be fair.

Graham Hutchison is co-coach of the Lincoln rugby team which has just locked away the Murray Cooper Shield, defended at home against other Ellesmere teams, for the eleventh straight season. He spoke to Tom Doudney about club culture, the team’s fiercest rivalry and

When the team is defending the Murray Cooper shield, which you’ve held for so long, what is the mood in the changing sheds before the game?

There is a steely resolve there – a determination which is evident from the time the boys arrive at the ground. They value that shield like nothing else. They realise that its history, and that they are part of the history and they really want to make sure that on their watch it doesn’t leave that Lincoln cabinet.

I guess when it has been there 11 years, it would be like that.

It has actually been there for about of 15 of the last 16 years. South-bridge won it in 2005 and we got it back in 2006 but we had had it for four years before that as well.

Rural rugby seems, even more so than city rugby, like its about get-ting out there with your mates and letting off some steam and looking after each other – would you say that’s pretty accurate?

Rural rugby is quite intense – we train two times a week and everyone takes it pretty seriously. You could probably argue its a level below the town rugby but in some cases there are some really good teams out in Ellesmere this year with South-bridge and Waihora and Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell are all very strong sides so it’s a strong competition.

I guess you probably would have played rugby yourself in your younger days?

I never played rugby – I played rugby league. I moved out into the

country and there was no rugby league out here and our boys started playing rugby.

There must have been some pretty good rivalries built up over the years between Lincoln and other clubs – which is the team you most want to beat?

Lincoln and Waihora have still got a fierce rivalry. They play each year for the Sparks Trophy and that has been going on for some time and obviously they came to try and take the shield off us a couple of weeks ago but they didn’t quite get there.

What does the future hold for Lincoln rugby over the next couple of years do you think?

We are in the rebuilding stage, it was a tough year last year for our division one side but we have shown some good improvement this year and were pretty competitive so I think it is heading in the right direc-tion.

What do you do for a living?I’m the chief executive of a com-

pany called Teltrac Communications – a telecommunications contracting company.

Have you done any other sorts of jobs before joining Teltrac?

No, I worked for Telecom as a telephone technician and then I got the opportunity to get involved with Teltrac as one of the shareholders and have been here for 25 years now.

When did you first move to Selwyn and where did you come from?

I’m a West Coaster. I come from Blackball

and then I transferred over there in 1975 and got married in 1976 and in 1979 we moved out into the country.

Was it on the West Coast that you played rugby league?

Yes, I played for Blackball and Waro-Rakau. Then I played at senior level for Marist-Western when I came over here.

Is it a bit more of a rugby league culture over there is it?

It was where I came from – it was just all rugby league in Blackball.

What do you like to do in your spare time out of work?

I have got a 2ha block so that keeps me busy, I do a lot of garden-ing because I like to grow my own vegetables and I am a keen follower of racehorses. But family is the most important thing.

How much longer do you think you will be coaching?

This is my last year, I’m getting too old. I’m just happy to see

the team heading back in the right direction. The longevity of my coaching is probably a reflection on the club – they have

been bloody good, and if I could just get a

little plug in here – Lincoln would look forward to hearing from any new players that want to join a progressive club that looks after their players.

about the people as it is the game

SAFE AGAIN: Graham Hutchison, right, is pleased that Lincoln will be able to lock away the Murray Cooper Shield for the 11th straight season. Co-coach Daryl Petheram is next to Hutchison. Below: Chiefs player Andrew Horrell was coached by Hutchison at the junior level.

LESS THAN three months ago Sam Dickson lay in the middle of the field in agony at the Hong Kong sevens tournament.

His teammates were celebrat-ing a last minute game winning try against Kenya.

But Dickson was contemplat-ing how bad the knee injury he had just sustained could be.

“First of all, I thought it was just my [medial collateral liga-ment], which is usually about eight weeks out.

“Then I went and had an MRI and found out the next day the [anterior cruciate ligament] was ruptured, which wasn’t great news.

“To be honest, I thought Rio was completely out of the pic-ture.”

A ruptured ACL would in almost any circumstance mean surgery and at least six months out of the game.

The lure of the Olympic Games

was enough for the 26-year-old to take a risk and go the non-tra-ditional method of attempting to recover from the injury without surgery. A decision that would

keep his Rio dream alive. The odds were not in Dickson’s

favour. However, his knee recov-ered to the point where he could take part in the sevens trial camp three weeks ago.

“I hadn’t done much field stuff by then.

“To be honest, I didn’t have a lot of confidence going into that, but I managed to get through it and I was pretty happy with the way i went.”

With his knee holding up to the test, Dickson accomplished the goal that just a few month ago he would have seen as a long shot. Being named in the sevens squad for the Rio Olympics.

Sevens didn’t enter Dickson’s mind until 2012, spending 17 years coming through the grades as an emerging flanker.

Dickson’s rugby career began as a five-year-old playing midget rugby for West Melton.

He would play through the grades for the club, even playing afternoon games in the country competition after playing for his secondary school team, St

Thomas, in the morning. After going on to play first

XV rugby in his final year at St Thomas, Dickson spent two years playing for Marist Albion colts before rejoining his boy-hood club, West Melton.

He would go on to captain the side as well as lead the Ellesmere and Canterbury Country repre-sentative teams.

Sam Dickson cut his teeth playing rugby for West Melton. Next month he will stand on the world’s biggest sporting stage – the Rio Olympics. Gordon Findlater talks to Dickson about how lucky he is to be competing at the games, following a miraculous return from injury.

Sam DicksonBirthdate: October 28, 1989Height: 1.92mPosition: ForwardFact: Dickson’s only previous sevens experience prior to taking part in a sevens camp in 2012 was playing at midget level with West Melton. Dickson is the only South Island member of the New Zealand Sevens team.

GOING FOR GOLD: Sam Dickson has recovered from a serious injury and is now gearing up for the Rio Olympics, where he hopes to win gold with the New Zealand Sevens team.

The Laboratory and Arts On Tour announce their next event on Monday 25 July will be Everest Untold, an engrossing homage to epic expeditions. Part climbing experience, part history lesson and part personal revelation, Everest Untold gives “…the untold story all New Zealanders should know” about the 1953 Everest expedition in which Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mt Everest. Written by Gareth Davies and produced by Ffynroc Productions, the touring play features Stephen Lovatt as Everest expedition leader Sir John Hunt, and Edwin Wright as ‘the other Kiwi’ - Hawkes Bay born George Lowe.

Through this partnership, Davies reveals stories of sheer grit, determination and ambition in a dangerously inhospitable environment. For British Army Colonel Sir John Hunt, it’s all about the grand plan: For Lowe, experienced climber, schoolmaster with a can-do attitude, it’s all about the men. We also learn of the other men in the expedition – a physicist, geologist, doctor, cameraman, mountaineers and, of course, the Nepalese Sherpas. The play explores the cultural differences and divides, but also the passion to climb that all the members share.

The Laboratory is opening especially on a Monday (when normally closed) so the whole venue will be given over to this fantastic show. Doors open at 5.30pm and the play starts at 7pm (60 mins no interval). The bar will be open with a delicious menu available on the night but seats are limited, so do book a table by calling 325 3006 if you have purchased a ticket and want to ensure you get a great seat to dine before the play begins.

Tickets are $25 and available over the bar or online from Eventfinda.

“This is a play truly for New Zealanders and New Zealand’s reputation abroad…I can’t tell you how informative it is, how entertaining it is and what a great evening it was at the theatre” - Raymond Hawthorne, ONZM

Page 11: Selwyn Times 12-07-16

He made the Canterbury NPC wider-training squad in 2012. But the catalogue of talented loose forwards in the Canter-bury ranks meant opportunities were limited with the likes of Nasi Manu, George Whitelock, Luke Whitelock, Matt Todd, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw and Jordan Taufua among the ranks.

Sir Gordon Tietjens was look-ing for a new crop of players to bring into his sevens squad in 2012.

Former Canterbury NPC coach Tabai Matson recognised something in Dickson that he believed could translate to the seven-man game and had the flanker attend a sevens training camp.

After impressing at the camp, Dickson was selected to play in the 2012 Safari sevens tourna-ment in Kenya. It was the first sevens tournament he had played in, having never previ-ously played at secondary school or provincial level.

“It was a bit of a shock to the system really. The altitude in Kenya was pretty high, plus we played six games in one day.”

Tietjens was impressed with the debut and selected Dickson in the sevens squad for the up-coming Gold Coast tournament. Tweaking a hamstring a day out from the tournament, though, meant he was forced to wait for

his New Zealand debut.Just a month later, he had his

opportunity in Dubai. Dickson was contracted for the remain-der of the season and claimed his first IRB sevens title in De-cember 2012 in South Africa. He would go on to win that year’s IRB Sevens World Series with New Zealand.

Dickson’s career could have taken a very different path at one stage.

In 2010, he was asked by a friend to play a game of AFL (Australian Rules) in Christch-urch

“I played a few games, learned the rules and just got better and better. All of a sudden i was playing for New Zealand and went to the International Cup in 2011.”

Following his performances for New Zealand in Australia, Dickson was scouted by Austral-ian club side St Kilda. But at 22, he was seen as being slightly too old to mould into a professional.

With his path now well and truly heading towards Rio, Dickson is confident having another four weeks to get back to full fitness.

If New Zealand is able to win gold at the sevens, the victory will surely taste even sweeter for Dickson who, at the moment, is feeling healthy, lucky and ready to play.

Rio’s six-day sevens tourna-ment begins on August 6.

New Zealand Sevens Rio Olympics squad:

Scott Curry (C), Sam Dick-son, DJ Forbes, Akira Ioane, Reiko Ioane, Gillies Kaka, Tim Mikkelson, Augustine Pulu, Teddy Stanaway, Regan Ware, Joe Webber, Sonny Bill Williams.

Now you can with the help of a new 77-page walking and biking guide to our district. The Council developed the guide for local residents and tourists and it’s now available from local libraries and online at www.sensationalselwyn.co.nz (under the brochures link).

Future plans for Rolleston ReserveConsultation on a land exchange proposal is now underway affecting Rolleston Reserve and Foster Park.

This proposal would see the reserve status on 4.3 hectares of land at Rolleston Reserve (around half the reserve) being transferred to 30 hectares of land at Foster Park. The exchange of part of Rolleston reserve would provide extra land which can be used to create a town centre for Rolleston, accommodating new shops, businesses, places to eat, a new library and town square, and space for people to relax.

The remaining part of the reserve would be developed into an exciting urban park with a range of features that may include a playground, youth park and other features such as a community pavilion and water feature. Having the park close to shops and the library will attract people to use it for relaxation and gathering. The playcentre, scout facility, tennis and netball courts will remain at the park. The redesign of the park will be subject to a separate consultation where people can share their views on future plans.

A drop-in session on the proposal will be held on Tuesday 19 July between 6-8.30pm at the Council’s Rolleston Headquarters. More information on the exchange and a submission/objection form is available at www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay or from Council service centres. Objections/submissions on the proposal can be made until 5pm on Friday 29 July 2016.

Remember to register your dog in JulyDuring July dog owners will need to register or re-register their dogs. Owners need to register by 31 July and registering your dog by this date enables you to take advantage of a discounted dog registration rate.

You can register your dog online. To use the system you need your customer and dog owner number. Dog owners who provided the Council with their email address would have received an email from Council on 20 June with this information. If you didn’t receive an email you should have been posted dog registration papers in late June with these numbers. Whether you received an email or were posted papers you can register your dog online.

To use the new system please visit www.selwyn.govt.nz and select the dog registration story on the website homepage. Click on the link provided in the story which will take you to the registration form. You will need to log in with your email address and password which you will use again to register your dog next year. Once you’ve done this please check your details are correct on the online form. If you need to change your address, add or take off a dog you can do this on the form. Then you can make an online payment.

Once you have completed registration payment a strip or disc dog tag will be posted to you within two weeks. If this is not your preference please email [email protected] with your owner number.

You can also pay your dog registration fee at a Council service centre.

If your dog registration papers were posted rather than emailed to you, this is because we don’t have your email address so please email [email protected] with your owner number and your email address. This will allow us to email you in the future regarding dog registration.

Are you enrolled to vote in local elections? Did you get your electoral enrolment pack in the mail recently? If you did you need to check your details are correct. If they are correct, you don’t need to do anything and you’re ready to vote in the upcoming local elections in October. If your details need to be corrected, then update them and send them back promptly.

If you didn’t receive a pack your address may be incorrect, or you may not be registered to vote. To register or update your details please visit elections.org.nz, freetext your name and address to 3676, call 0800 36 76 56 or visit a PostShop.

The local elections are held by postal vote. Voting papers will be posted on 16 September with voting closing at 12 noon on 8 October.

On the roads this weekGravelling and reshaping work will take place on Rakaia Terrace Road, with the road remaining open. Work to remove isolated sections of high shoulder to help improve the drainage of the road surface will be carried out on Boultons and Chamberlains Roads, with the roads remaining open. Maintenance grading work will occur in the High Country, Southbridge, Leeston, Prebbleton and West Melton areas.

Work continues to underground powerlines on Tennyson Street and install streetlights, construct a shared walkway/cycleway between Coalgate and Glentunnel and work will start on kerb and channel, seal widening and footpath construction to complete the north side of Lowes Road.

Stay active during winter! New classes start at Lincoln Event Centre and Rolleston Community Centre from 25 July onwards.

New classes at Rolleston Community Centre include spin classes running on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings and Wednesday lunchtimes, two new Mature and Motivated classes, yoga express – a 45 minute session for all ability levels – and mini gym for 1-2 year olds. WEST MELTON resident Kate Shaw will no longer need to worry about keeping the chill out of her home this winter.

Last weekend, Mrs Shaw walked out of the The Star Home and Leisure Show with the winning ticket for a new central heating system for her home.

“I’m very excited . . . this is the first sort of prize I have ever won,” Mrs Shaw said.

The system, designed to radi-ate heat throughout the house, was sponsored by Central Heat-ing New Zealand.

Central Heating New Zealand managing director Lyall Smith

said the unit is a warm water central heating system.

“They work very well. Silent, warm, radiant, lovely to have,” he said.

Mr Smith said the radiated panels situated throughout the house will heat the water pumped through the radiators to warm the house.

More than 100 exhibitors packed into Horncastle Arena for the three-day show last week with some of the exhibitions ranging from motor homes to trampolines.

Star Media event manager Vanessa Fleming said it was a fantastic show with “thousands” through the door.

WINNER: Central Heating New Zealand managing director Lyall Smith with The Star Home and Leisure Show prizewinner Kate Shaw. Mrs Shaw won a new central heating system for her home in West Melton.

MALVERN LIONS Club has welcomed their new president and said goodbye to an original member.

District councillor and Lions member John Morten took over from previous president Brian Davidson at the organisation’s last meeting.

The Lions also said farewell to Murray Faulkner, who had been in the club since it began 45 years ago. He left because he recently moved to Ashburton.

Mr Davidson was the president of the Malvern Lions for a year.

“Every year there is a new president elected. That way we keep things moving,” said Mr Davidson.

Mr Morten said being the presi-dent would “not mean much” if it wasn’t for the team of people in the organisation.

“You’re really only steering the ship, there are all the sailors putting in the hard work,” Mr Morten said.

With a club of 54 members Mr Morten hopes to have an exciting and successful year.

THERE IS more written about pruning roses than almost any other aspect of their care.

Yet, why do we prune our roses?

Here are a few key reasons:Encourage new growth and

more blooms. Maintain the health of the rose by removing old wood, improve air circula-tion within the bush.

Maintain a specific shape, especially for climbing and pillar roses, and those that are pegged down.

Not all roses have the same need to be pruned, some just need an annual “going over’’ after flowering to remove the dead wood. Other roses, most notably the highly bred hybrid teas and floribundas, need regu-lar pruning. If you garden on a light, sandy soil then prune your roses only lightly as they will not be able to support the vigorous new growth that hard pruning encourages.

The time to tackle pruning is in the winter while they are dormant, before they burst into growth. In some areas of New Zealand, and in some seasons, there may seem to be almost no period of dormancy and so you must choose your moment carefully. So do not prune when

there is still a risk of severe frost, as any new growth will be frost-ed and die back.

You will have to cut back to the next bud, reducing the plant further.

Most bush roses flower on the current year’s growth.

A hard prune will produce more vigorous new growth. Remove the oldest cane on the

plant; this keeps the bush fresh and vigorous.

Then reduce thick, strong stems by about half their height. Thin canes need to be cut back to one-third their height.

Try to keep the centre of the plant open. A mess of spindly, twiggy growth in the middle of the plant restricts light and air circulation, encouraging disease.

Don’t let frost get to your pruned rosesGardening

PRISTINE: Hard pruning roses will produce more vigorous new growth.

Time to plant deciduous treesGOING INTO the middle of winter, air and soil temperatures are low, the soil is often very wet, and frosts are in many parts of southern New Zealand.

July is the main month for planting new deciduous trees, shrubs, fruit trees and roses, and garden centres are now fully stocked with these plants. Always select high quality specimens and plant correctly with plenty of compost into the existing soil.

In the vege patch, continue planting and harvesting broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbages, cauliflower, silverbeet and spinach. Where soil conditions allow, you can start preparing the vege garden for spring planting. In late July, chop up and dig in green manure crops like lupins or mustard.

If you have roses, complete your annual pruning, especially on bush or standards that produce flowers late into early winter such as Icebergs.

Remove all dead and weak growth, clean out the centre of plants and prune to outward facing buds. Add fresh compost to the soil around the rose plant, but do not fertilise until spring arrives.

In warmer, sheltered areas, citrus production should be in full swing, with clementine mandarins, lemons, limes and navel oranges all now maturing.

Check your trees while picking fruit for any overcrowding or weak branches that should be removed. Check for any root stock growth and prune where required. For colder climates, use frost cloths to protect frost tender citrus.

Give fruit trees a second winter clean up. Spray with a copper compound or lime sulphur to kill any overwintering fungal diseases.

Now’s the time to prune your blackberries, boysenberries, loganberries, or raspberries. Cut out all old canes and any weak spindly growth. New season strong canes should then be tied up on wires or fences to help support this summer’s fruit crop.

Complete your strawberry plantings this month. Purchase new plants or obtain young plants (runners) from the previous season strawberry plants. For the home garden, plant at least 20 strawberry plants to ensure plenty of fresh strawberries for the whole family.

Your hydrangeas may be starting to look a little sad.

They can grow very large and require heavy pruning and thinning. Remove old wood completely as there will be ample new growth in spring. Make sure you cut just above a node as it is from here that spring growth will appear.

Flowering winter shrubs

like azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons will provide lovely colour in your garden.

Take note of what varieties or species are performing best in your garden or in neighbouring gardens for next year’s new planting.

Winter flowering annuals will be at their very best in July. Primulas, violas, pansies, calendulas and cinerarias should all be in full bloom. Continue to dead head from these plants to encourage continual flowering.

BOUNTY: If your garden is sheltered, citrus production should be in full swing.

VIBRANT: Continue to dead heat winter flowering annuals.

Question:

Answer:

I want to try and grow some seed potatoes this year, what do I need to do to prepare the ground, and how do I plant them?

Thanks to charlotte for her question.

Yum! Freshly dug potatoes out of your own garden – you will love them! Here are some tips for you.

1. Choose an area to create your garden if you haven’t done so already. Make sure it gets the sun! Dig through some Organic Compost and Sheep Pellets. If you are planting them in pots, make sure you get a good quality mix!

2. Spread the seed potatoes out in a dry area and allow the sprouts to develop to approximately 1 to 2 centimetres in length.

3. Planting: Create a trough - ideally in a sunny sheltered area - roughly 15 centimetres in depth and add Intelligro’s Potato Fertiliser at a rate of 200g per square metre. Mix into the soil. Fill the trough with the fertilised soil back to 10 centimetres high. For pot planting, make sure they have good drainage.

4. Place the seed potatoes 25 centimetres apart in a row with the sprouts pointing upwards before gently covering with the remaining soil.

5. Continue to mound the soil around the potato plant as it grows to around 5 to 10 centimetres high, as this will protect the potatoes from greening and insect damage.

6. Once harvested store in a cool dark place to retain their freshness.

Fonterra is currently undertaking a winter maintenance programme with the aim of delivering savings for the co-operative as it gets “match-fit” for spring.

Director of nZ Manufacturing Mark Leslie said this “winter shut” period is an important time of year for manufacturing teams, as all assets across Fonterra’s network of sites are fine-tuned to ensure they are ready for the season ahead.

“each year we process around 18 billion litres of milk, with the bulk of this carried out in the spring months. The work we’re doing now will help us get match-fit for that peak period.”

Mr Leslie says the goal for manufacturing teams in this year’s winter shut has been finding more effective and efficient ways to maintain sites for the coming season.

“together, Fonterra and industry are focused on ensuring we can produce quality product for our customers and support farmers under a constrained milk price.

“We have always been efficient in our maintenance projects, so the challenge this year was to come up with new and innovative ways to do things better, faster and smarter.”

Hundreds of Fonterra manufacturing site staff are taking part in the annual winter

work, with more than 500 projects currently underway around the country, ranging from major capital works to minor overhauls.

Winter shutdown manager at te rapa Blair Bond puts the improvements down to an ongoing “owner’s mindset” across the manufacturing teams.

“every person on our team is on the same page. We treat the assets as if we were their owners – putting ourselves in our farmers’ shoes and thinking about how we can do things more effectively and drop our bottom line.

“This work during the winter shut has also led to innovative thinking that will change the way we process milk during the milking season.”

Mr Bond gives the example of the D4 evaporator – which evaporates water out of the milk to then be turned into powder. The team came up with an innovative way of splitting the process into stages, which will allow the evaporator to run for six per cent longer meaning more milk can be processed each day.

Mr Bond adds: “it’s year-round for us. Throughout the entire year we’re talking to other sites about what worked for them and leveraging our collective strength to help our co-operative deliver.”

More efficient site maintenance the goal during winter shutdown

LincoLn University ecology Master’s student shannon Gilmore’s research into the effect lunar phases and illumination have on activity levels in possums, stoats, rats and mice is aimed at finding more effective and efficient means of targeting and managing

these pests. “it costs millions every year to control

their populations,” Ms Gilmore says. “We’re waging a kind of war on pests. We

need to discover their weaknesses. What trait do all four have in common that we can take

advantage of? They are all nocturnal, and many nocturnal animals dramatically reduce their activity with the full moon, while others can become more active.

“if i can discover their preferences and am able to predict whether a full moon would make a pest more active, increasing the likelihood of it encountering bait or a trap, then we could decide when it is worth deploying controls. it’s a fine-tuning of our battle plan. ”

Ms Gilmore’s research follows on from similar studies, but past researchers were unable to accurately measure illumination levels, a significant drawback as they couldn’t determine whether the animals were responding to the moon’s cycle or the change in light levels. The recent availability of low-cost, portable, weather-resistant and highly sensitive sky Quality Meters (sQM’s) used by astronomers could be a game changer.

“i’ll be able to calculate an illumination level throughout a night and this may give some insight. conditions such as cloud cover, season, weather and urban light pollution will also be considered.”

she is conducting her fieldwork on Banks Peninsula, which provides a variety

of habitats and easy access to possums. camera traps and bite marks on non-toxic wax tags at each field site record the activity levels of the pests.

While the broad objective is to discover how the activity levels of possums, rats, stoats and mice change with moon phase or illumination levels, testing new equipment a better way to measure illumination levels, Ms Gilmore says discovering the lunar phase and illumination preferences of pest animals has the potential to provide organisations such as the Department of conservation, regional councils and other agencies with practical information they can use.

“streamlining pest control operations means less material assets wasted and reduced labour intensity. conservation work has a reputation for a general lack of cash and any savings tend to be warmly welcomed.”

Ms Gilmore says the study would not have been as successful without funding from the Brian Mason trust, whose mission is to advance scientific objectives in canterbury and has facilitated efforts to make new Zealand pest free.

Research into nocturnal habits aims to boost pest control

Shannon Gilmore setting up a camera.

Knowing if nocturnal pest mammals are more affected by the phases of the moon or by illumination could bring new Zealand a step closer to being pest free and save control agencies significant sums of money.

THE JUNE 23 referendum which resulted in Great Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union has taken the world by surprise.

There will be a long period of global financial uncertainty before stability returns and that will also affect many aspects of our down under economies.

In the short term, imported goods will most certainly rise, including motor vehicles, espe-cially those sourced from Europe.

That being the case, there’s probably no better time to buy a European car, and if your budget is a little restricted but you need a reliable practical car, Skoda has the answer.

A new Fabia has just landed and it lists from $19,990. It arrives here in three variants, and I was lucky enough to land a drive in the range-topping sta-tion wagon which, incidentally, lists at an amazing $26,990, making it, what I believe to be one of the bargain purchases in today’s new car market.

The Fabia wagon, or Combi, as Skoda badge it, is powered by a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder engine. Before you scoff at its meagre displacement, bear in mind that it produces 81kW and has a healthy 175Nm of

torque thanks to turbocharged boost. If you take into account the areas where peak power and maximum torque are devel-oped (4600rpm-5600rpm and 1400rpm-4000rpm respectively), there is an unimpeded supply of power from very low in the rev band, providing a spirited drive through a seven-speed direct shift automatic gearbox.

If fuel usage is also an impor-tant buying criteria, the Fabia Combi is listed with a 4.8-litre per 100km (58mpg) combined cycle average.

You don’t have to try hard to replicate that, I wasn’t gentle with the throttle during my time in the test car, yet it was easy to have the fuel usage readout list-ing around 6l/100km (47mpg), that along with an instantaneous readout of 4.6l/100km (62mpg) on the highway cruising a steady 100km/h (engine speed 2050rpm).

I’ve often written about the Czech Republic’s engineering prowess, and if you combined that with Volkswagen’s manufac-turing ideology of quality and efficiency you won’t be disap-pointed with Fabia. The entire package is one of practicality and functionality.

Take it’s 505-litre load space for example, extending to 1370-litres, the wagon sec-

tion is cavernous for what is deemed to be a small car. That doesn’t come at the cost of rear occupant space, the Fabia can still be considered a marginal five-seater, head and leg room is satisfactory.

Up front it is the same, the seating position is constantly comfortable, and the controls fall readily to hand. It’s fair to say the Fabia isn’t overly com-plicated, there aren’t a lot of functions to speak of, but the essentials are there, and there is enough kit to still consider the purchase a bargain.

I took the test car on my usual high country drive beneath the Malvern Hills and found it to

be a spirited, well-handling car which quickly endears itself. Handling-wise it is directional with quick turn-in and positive steering feel. Providing the grip are 215/45 x 16in Bridgestone Potenza performance tyres, what they lack in size they make up for in quality, they are sticky yet also quiet.

There aren’t any surprises within the suspension, but if you take into account that the floorpan is essentially Volkswagen Polo-based, you can guarantee a sophisticated ride along with spring and damper rates that arrest body movement when confronted with a quick corner or two, and if you really

want to get serious, a sport suspension package is available, it also includes bigger wheels. But even in standard form the Fabia wagon is an adept handler.

Becasue the engine develops its power low in the rev band and the constant supply of gear-ing there is a seamless flow of energy. It is responsive and willing, easily offering the per-formance needed for a highway overtake or a quick burst on a hilly incline.

The Fabia Combi really appealed to me, it is car that feels just right from the moment you hop into it. I’m hoping that amidst all the uncertainty in Europe at the moment that good cars like it, and the hundreds of others which find their way from the Continent to New Zealand, won’t be affected by Britain’s decision to go it alone.

Skoda Fabia wagon a good value purchase

A ClAss ACtWith 238 square metres of floor space and four bedrooms, the Vernon design is an ideal home for families or couples with no children.

On entering, it is apparent that considerable thought has gone into the execution of this house. it is light, bright and airy with plenty of windows and there is a high standard of finish.

Those who enjoy cooking and entertaining will be drawn to the kitchen, which blends stylishly with its neighbouring dining and living spaces. The butler’s pantry is the perfect complement. it comes with sink and window for outside viewing, making it a perfect room for food preparation and to hide away the dirty dishes, especially as the fridge and freezer are also situated there.

in the kitchen, side by side ovens take away the need to bend and offer extra cooking space when catering for larger numbers. textured tiles line the wall behind the cooktop right up to the ceiling, offset by cabinetry that is fitted down from the ceiling and into which are incorporated the range hood and lighting. The effect is unique, classy and more spacious.

Acrylic panelling on the kitchen cabinetry and recessed handles give a seamless look in this top of the line kitchen that includes deep double sinks, a tower mixer complete with extendable hose, engineered stone bench which at 50 millimetres is thicker than usual, and the waterfall legs that support the extra wide island, making it ideal for dining, socialising or working on.

Boxed ceilings are features in both the lounge and living room. in the latter living space, tiles have been used to great effect, as backing for the fireplace wall which has a nifty shelf halfway up and wall mounted television directly above.

All the smaller bedrooms have double wardrobes and the main bedroom, a walk-in robe and ensuite. This room is tucked away at the other end of the house offering privacy; an attractive feature if teenagers or additional adults are living there. A really nice touch too, is the built-in cabinetry in the wardrobes, ensuite, storage cupboards and in the living room and main bedroom where the space might also be adapted into a study nook.

Both the main bathroom and ensuite are

fully tiled. The former has bath and glass shower while the ensuite, a walk-in tiled shower and double vanity.

Storage is excellent, in the separate laundry which has cupboards and a bench, the two very generous hall cupboards, and the cylinder cupboard that is neatly tucked away at the end of the hallway near the double garage.

This house has a hi/five roof, plaster finish and cedar cladding that harmonises with large cedar decking from the living areas and main bedroom. All contribute to make this an extremely handsome home and one worth viewing.

Faye Homes’ Te Whāriki show home is open: Thursday to Sunday from

12noon until 4pm.

Jo Harkerss had reached a crossroad in her life when she enrolled in a Computing For Free programme at Ara Institute of Canterbury’s Bishopdale hub. Now she is a computing tutor helping others to succeed.

Why did you first enrol in Computing For Free?

I was on maternity leave when I was made

redundant from my job. Both my sister and

my mother were enrolled at the New Brighton

hub – that’s how I found out about it. I’ve

always enjoyed computing and I wanted to

use my time wisely to upskill myself.

What are you doing now?

I’m working as a tutor at Computing For Free!

What do you enjoy about your job?

It’s very cool helping other people to succeed.

The hardest thing is for people to walk in the

door. Then they realise that we are really nice!

And that they can do it. You see people come

in who feel afraid of computers, but we are

here to help them to achieve. Study is not easy

for everyone, but our programmes have a

good balance of theory and practice, plus the

programmes are self-paced to fit around other

commitments such as work and family.

For many people it is a huge stepping stone.

They may have been made redundant or been

out of the workforce after having children.

Here they can connect with other people and

learn new skills that will make them more

employable and give them confidence to

try other things too. They might have used

computers in the past, but programmes

change and skills need to be updated.

What sort of feedback do you get?

Because we’re like a family, once people

have finished their studies here, they come

back and tell us what they’re doing. Our

programmes lead into further computing

studies at Ara, or they can help you to find

work. I think most importantly,

our students get a taste of what they’re

capable of. They develop computer skills but

they also develop confidence and brush up

on the soft skills, such as communication

and networking, that employers value in

today’s workplaces.

03 940 8888 | 0800 24 24 76 | [email protected] | www.ara.ac.nz We’re here to help make your enrolment easy. Please call, email or visit our website for more information.

Ara Institute of Canterbury (formerly CPIT) has provided free computer courses at four hubs across Christchurch for over 15 years. Now, it is evolving to better connect a wide variety of learners with accessible training for basic computer skills or upskilling to improve career opportunities.

Computing For Free manager Peter Nock says that over 19,000 people have accessed

free or affordable training so far. “Originally we offered short, non-assessed computer courses as the government saw the need for adults to upskill in this area. We created a friendly and welcoming place to get started on computing skills, and we still do this, but now we also do a whole lot more.”

At hubs in New Brighton, Bishopdale, Hornby, Rangiora, Christchurch’s Madras Street and

“There is still a range of self-paced, short

courses of between 20 to 40 hours to

introduce people to specific programs like

web design and Powerpoint. However, we

also offer business and job-seeking courses,

and the National Certificate in Computing,

which is a formal qualification that employers

recognise and value.”

Peter adds that computer skills are a

necessity in today’s professional environment.

computer and some people need to acquire

Computer tutor Josh Hough, who teaches school students through Ara Institute of Canterbury, offers some useful tips about basic computing for employment.

1. Knowing how to use a computer

Knowing how to actually operate a computer

will make you a much more efficient

employee. Having an understanding of the

appearance, keyboard commands and ways

in which the computer operating system

works will make you more valuable to

your employer.

2. Word processing skills

Word processing is an absolutely essential

skill in today’s job market. Many employers

require their staff to be able to proficiently

write, edit, and produce a variety of

documents using a computer.

3. Using the internet

Being able to confidently use the internet

is crucial for job seekers. Having the ability

to complete research by browsing various

websites or by using search engines can

allow you to easily find things out – useful for

both work and home life!

4. Using email

Many workplaces now use email as their

primary method of communication.

Having a good understanding of how to

use it is essential. Knowing about correct

email etiquette is also important as it’s

easy to convey the wrong message when

communicating in text only.

5. Using Microsoft Office

Many employers use specialist software,

however the majority use Microsoft office

for common tasks such as word processing,

spreadsheets, databases and presentations.

Being familiar with these programmes is an

essential skill to possess.

6. Using the cloud

Cloud technology provides online storage

space and is commonly used to store, send

and receive files. Many businesses make use

of this technology to allow their employees

to share and collaborate on files and

documents.

7. Keeping secure

There are all sorts of security risks

associated with using a computer, especially

when sensitive data is involved. Knowing the

dos and don’ts to help keep you and your

10 essential computer skills for the workplace

Opening doors to the world of ICT

employer safe when using the computer is something every employee should know.

8. Knowing how to back up your work

Unfortunately, computers can get viruses and networks can crash. Learning how to back up your documents so you don’t risk losing all of your hard work if something goes wrong is a really helpful skill to possess.

9. Organising your files

A large amount of businesses store their files on computer networks that can vary in complexity. Being able to organise your files effectively is a desirable skill for many employers.

10. Understanding basic hardware terminology

You don’t have to be a tech-wiz, but you do need to understand the difference between the various parts of the computer like the “hard drive”, “modem” and “router”. Knowing the names of the parts and their functions will make it much easier to get help when you need to report a problem to tech support.
