What is Internet?
Internet is a confused computer networks. It is an interconnection of computer networks all
over the world that are bringing billion of people online. Billions of computers are connected
to the internet. Internet is connected through wires. Therefore internet is physical i.e. it has
physical reality since it is connected using wires. Because of internet, billions of computers
are communicating with each other.
Internet is also a set of protocols. These protocols are used to find out how computers are
connected to the internet to communicate with each other to accomplish things. We cannot do
anything useful or interesting just by connecting the computers to the huge networks. To do
anything useful and interesting through internet, the computers should be able exchange data
as well as they should co-operate each other to perform other important functions.
The internet is people. Internet is the space that the humans have created. The factors that
make use of internet so excited are:
• What humans do with it?
• What content humans put online?
• How humans use the internet?
Therefore the content that is on the internet is created by the humans i.e. all the content that is
available on the internet is the reflection of us (humans) and what we do online is also a
reflection of us.
The internet represents the fulfilment of a deep human desire to communicate.
Summary
Therefore, internet is:
• A physical network that connects billions of machines.
• A protocol that allow the connected machines to work together.
• People that make it work for us to do new and exciting things.
How internet works?
• How do you use internet?
• What do you do on net?
• Where is the internet?
The answers to the above questions are discussed below:
We have internet in our computer, mobile phones and tablets because of which we can play
games, watch movies, listen to music, search for any information, etc.
Internet is the world’s largest network of computer and exists all over the planet except in
some remote places e.g., the South Pole.
How does it fit together?
At home we have a small network without wires but it is still connected to the internet by a
cable (an internet cable).
Usually our home is connected to the internet by a wire that is buried in the ground to a
cabinet where many wires are connected to a larger internet cable. We can also connect to the
internet with mobile phones without wires. In this process the signals are sent to and from the
mobile phones through a mobile mast (cell site or cell tower) which is then connected to an
internet cable.
When a person is using internet his/her device is a part of the internet network. The internet
cables in the ground form a small network. These small networks are connected with larger
networks and then further all over the world with the help of wires that send information at a
superfast speed (nearly five times around the earth per second). The information which is
transmitted over the large internet cables is called as internet traffic.

Blog is a short form for web-log. Web-log is like a diary on the web. It could be a
commentary; it could be a collection of pictures or any other review.
The difference between a blog and a webpage is that; a blog may be periodic or occasionally
un-periodic. A blog is a time bound release, i.e., one can have a blog every month or every
day. Blogs are categorised by the date of release and keywords. Whereas, a page is a generic
web-page. It could be a static page with no time bound to it and it could appear in the front
page or in the menu items and so on. Pages can have other objects in it such as tables, lists,
images, attachments, etc.
