dissatisfaction and de-personalization, higher rates
of addiction, sense of failure, job or career change,

and innovation is stalled

Home Based Medicine = Solution?
Successful positioning of home-based
medicine in the healthcare field:
• Vocationally rewarding work because challenging
cases
• Requires complex teamwork and community
partnerships
• Reimbursement model is lagging, many use
sustaining and motivating compensation models
• Entire team feels value-added work as a part of the
system
• Allows for personal flexibility
9
Classic Coping Strategies
• Joint Visits to manage tension and have separate discussions with family members
• Documentation recognizing the time involved in paperwork and scheduling to allow for completion during work hours
• Financial Model lower overhead can allow for flexibility in numbers of patients seen
• Team Approach to continually educate patient and family and reinforce Care Plan
• Administrative Support to manage scheduling and routing
Administrative Strategies
Create proactive operational strategies in
place, instead of reactive
• How will you handle patient non-compliance? It’s
easy to see when a patient hasn’t followed
instructions in their home
• How will you handle patient no-shows? It wastes a
lot of time and energy for Providers to travel if the
patient isn’t present
• How often do you meet with your colleagues and
your team? Often not one right answer, so it helps
to feel supported by your colleagues
11
Administrative Strategies
Create a culture of support and addressing
stress and burnout
• Have all individuals in the organization feel as
though they are problem solvers and can be part
of a system that removes red tape
• Build a Human Resources department and
policies that are supportive
• Encourage paid time off and promote balance
• Utilize and talk about Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
• Compensate in line with work levels
• Be proactive
• Show team appreciation 12
