The value of Self Assessment

We hope that by simply answering the questions in the self assessment process it has made you question how your company approaches environmental management in a way that is more than just a corporate policy.

So long as you answered the questions honestly and to the best of your knowledge the value of self assessment will already be evident to you. The next step is to get an idea of where you sit compared to other similar companies. As our membership is Logistics operators we are comparing you against them, as whilst we know logistics companies do vary many of the broad issues are comparable.

This analysis will help you to shape your priorities for focus going forward as well as allow you to see your strengths. We had added our thoughts on where we see your key areas for improvement and how we think you could address these.

Strengths

Aspects register• Completing an initial risk assessment is a great start to

your EMS however you do need to ensure it remains relevant and up to date - reflecting changing circumstances in both your business and legislation. You need also to make sure that you take into account normal and abnormal conditions, emergencies and accidents and don't forget you can have positive impacts as well as negative. As a more mature EMS you can potentially afford add more aspects into the significant ones you address and consider those areas that you may not have direct control over but can influence such as your business partners.

Commitment to compliance• Having documented a commitment to compliance,

processes need to be in place and remain relevant to changing legislation. Companies need to ensure that they have methods by which to ensure they support their commitment. With a more mature EMS you may be able to consider committing to other non regulatory guidelines or codes of practice to enhance your levels of compliance.

Improvement areasPolicy• Having a policy outlining your environmental priorities is an

essential part of any formal management system. Even of you are not applying a formal environmental management system, having a policy provides the focus for the organisation to priorities effort. Its important that the policy makers of your organisation understand the need for an environment policy and what it should consider, in fact you may want to look at what other companies do. Having documented a robust policy you need to communicate it so that all colleagues understand, if not every detail the sentiment behind it and are therefore able to support it. Therefore having your policy as part of your internal communications is important too. It is important that your Environmental Policy fits with your overall company mission, vision and core values as it is should be embedded as part of your corporate identify not set aside from it.

F gas compliance• F gas/Ozone depleting regulations are is a key area for many

distribution sites (including those that aren't refrigerated) and so important to ensure that this legislation is understood. What is important to also consider is not just the physical infrastructure but also the behaviors and procedures that support this.
