Selecting the anti-ligature door hardware that best fits your requirements

What does anti-ligature hardware mean?In Behavioral Healthcare facilities, suicide it’s a major

concern. Anti-ligature hardware is hardware designed to impede tying or looping to prevent patient opportunity for self harm. Another common term used is “ligature-

resistant” which would endure most but not all tying/looping scenarios.

Accurate’s anti-ligature locksets are available in mortise, tubular and cylindrical options. To

determine which system is best for the application at hand a few questions need to be

answered

Page 3: Selecting the anti ligature door hardware that best fits

Question #1: New or Existing Doors?

A: For New Doors:Great! Mortise is the recommended system: • Variety of functions available including anti-

barricade features, monitoring options and added anti-ligature features like the (BL) beveled latch bolt

• 9100 UL listed 3-hour, Grade 1 locks• Any standard mortise type cylinder can be used

allowing for compatibility with existing keying systems (select appropriate cam based on lock function)

The next step would be to determine the function required as well as any code restrictions.

Not a mortise fan? For 2 1/8” cross bore door preparations, a cylindrical system would be the next option (for fire rated openings and openings requiring locking functions). For passage doors not requiring fire rated hardware, a tubular system could also be considered.

Question #1: New or Existing Doors?Cont’d

For Existing DoorsWell…we’re now limited to work with what’s existing:Question #1.1: Does the door currently have a mortise prep (typically 8” tall by 1 ¼” wide plate on the edge)? If you answered YES: Great! You could use Accurate’s anti-ligature MORTISE sets . Typically the edge of the door requires no modification but it’s important to pay attention to the face of the door. Accurate offers and can custom make plates to cover any scars on the door. You’re ready for the next step: determine function required as well as any code restrictions. If you answered NO: Don’t get discouraged, you just have more answering to do:

Question #1.2: Select the answer that best fits your situation: a) ANSI 161 prep (2 1/8” cross bore with a 2 ¼” tall x 1 1/8” wide plate), no locking system as the door is a closet/passage

doorb) ANSI 161 prep (2 1/8” cross bore with a 2 ¼” tall x 1 1/8” wide plate) with a key-in locking system, no extra holes on the

doorc) ANSI 161 prep (2 1/8” cross bore with a 2 ¼” tall x 1 1/8” wide plate) with a separate hole for the locking system

If your answer is:d) If the door is not fire-rated you could use a tubular antiligature set. If the door is fire-rated, you would need a “cylindrical

passage set”e) You would need a cylindrical antiligature locksetf) Hmmm, not an easy situation, call or email some measurements (like distance between the holes) and more details on

the required functionality…a picture would make wonders! this is a tough one but we can make it work

Question #2: What’s the purpose/functionality required?

Typical functions:For Patient Bedrooms: Classroom function locks. Make sure to cover all scenarios (e.g. will the lock remain locked after it closes?). The classroom function is available in MORTISE and CYLINDRICAL systemsA dormitory function with a deadlock on a mortise setup is only recommended when there is no thumb turn operation inside)

For Patient Bathrooms: Privacy (maybe)…this relates to the facility. Some prefer passage doors (no locking at all), others would like to reward the patients with privacy by allowing them to lock the door BUT barricade is a big concern. The Institutional Privacy function is the best for this application but it’s only available in the MORTISE set up.Other facilities will require storeroom type locks in which whenever the door closes it’s locked preventing unauthorized/unattended access but from the inside the door is always free for egress.

For Utility closets: Store room

For Seclusion rooms: Asylum/Institutional lockset

Many other functions available (especially in the mortise set-up, please refer to the function list under your selected system (MORTISE, CYLINDRICAL) for details
