What Makes a Good Corn Silage Hybrid?

Page 3: Selecting Corn Silage Hybrids

Good Corn Silage?

• Big Ear?• Tall?• Less than perfect stalk integrity?

Page 4: Selecting Corn Silage Hybrids

Good Corn Silage

• Big Ear: 40-50% of yield, energy content• Tall: 1 ton per foot (w/o ear)• Less than perfect stalk integrity– Low lignin= lower NDF• More digestible= more milk

Page 5: Selecting Corn Silage Hybrids

What about?

• Leafy– Only 10-12% of yield

• Protein– Much cheaper than energy– Focus on energy!

Page 6: Selecting Corn Silage Hybrids

Ration 1

• 70 lbs low energy/high protein corn silage• 7 lbs high quality alfalfa hay• 23 lbs grain @ $307.00/ton• 75 lbs milk

Page 7: Selecting Corn Silage Hybrids

Ration 2

• 70 lbs high energy/low protein corn silage• 7 lbs high quality alfalfa hay• 21.1 lbs grain @ $287.00/ton• 75 lbs milk

Page 8: Selecting Corn Silage Hybrids

What is Energy?

• ADF (acid detergent fiber)– Composed of cellulose and lignin– Lignin– indigestible– Relates inversely to digestibility

• NDF (neutral detergent fiber)– Composed of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin– Relates inversely to intake

• NEL – Net Energy for Lactation – Calculated from ADF

Corn SilageA “minor” crop?

• Only about 7% of corn in the U.S. is harvested for silage.

• Historically, this has limited most seed companies’ interest in silage-only hybrids.

Page 11: Selecting Corn Silage Hybrids

UK Corn Silage Variety Trial

• Purpose– Provide unbiased data on common corn silage

varieties for growers to use to make hybrid selection decisions

Page 12: Selecting Corn Silage Hybrids

• Measurements– Yield– Quality– Disease– Miscellaneous• Grain• Stalk Integrity• Fertility

• Locations– Adair County• South Central KY

– Boyle County• Central KY

– Mason County• Northern KY

What’s Your Goal

• Yield?• Quality?• Compromise?

Page 15: Selecting Corn Silage Hybrids

Milk Yield

• Calculated from CP, NDF, Starch, Fat, & Ash– University of Wisconsin

• Per Ton vs. Per Acre– Per Ton• Highest = Best Quality

– Per Acre• Highest= Sometimes a Compromise• Yield X Milk Yield Per Ton

5 Disease ratings were taken at harvest for gray leaf spot (GLS) and common rust on the flag leaf on a scale of 0-4, with 0 being no disease and 4

being the entire leaf was covered.

4 Quality measurements based on dry weight and are calculated from composite samples at each site.

22 39† Boyle County data was not included in the combined data set because of drought conditions and lower yields during the growing season.1 Yields adjusted to 35% dry matter; highest numerical yield is bold with gray box; bold yields are not significantly different from highest yield.2 Milk Yield was calculated with Milk 2000. Milk per ton of silage was rounded to the nearest ten and milk per acre was rounded to the nearest 3 Net energy for lactation (NEL) and gain (NEG).
