  • A driving force in the continual reconstruction of New Orleans, REBOUND seeks to enliven the citys people by reinterpreting the common vision of the library. This ultimate public amenity is defined by equal parts knowledge and community, emphasizing our human desire to share our pursuits both virtually and physically in an increasingly disconnected world. Within, reading and browsing opportunities vary in scope from traditional to virtual. Above, reading spaces are characterized by a light and open atmosphere allowed by the clear span, emphasizing the expansive view of the river flowing steadily below. Meanwhile, virtual browsing bays populate the lower level of the building and serve as the main interface between library goers and the AS/RS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System). Emphasizing digital technology, this approach seeks to enable users of all ages and interests while connecting the public as part of a larger civic body of shared knowledge.

  • Selected for its beauty and strength, steel lends efficiency and economy to the overall scheme in the form of composite trusses. Exposure of the structural elements reveals the rigor of the cantilevered form while paying homage to the steel yards that once dominated this stretch of riverfront. A formal language of deconstruction applied to the cladding scheme for views and accessibility relies on a system of steel tensile elements, revealing the structure further. By developing the landscape into a sculptural plinth and access point for everyone while serving as a bridge crossing the sites existing train lines, REBOUND activates the riverfront.

  • 9800-CLOUD in conjunction with Max Warman and Matt CatrowExploring the gap between textiles and digital fabrication, 9800-cloud utilizes the idea of the soft joint, turning a field of rigid plywood components into a quilt. A grasshopper script was generated to define a grid of 9800 triangles which were then deformed using attractor points to scew the cell sizes and scale the secondary apertures within the cells. The flat pattern is altered and offset for the layered materials (wood - chipboard - felt) to take advantage of their structural and visual qualities, and is then broken up into 18x32 sheets to be laser cut. This sheet based method of assembly decreased build time and allows for rapid serial gluing. This combination, flexible but sturdy, allows the flat piece to be suspended from the ceiling and fall comfortably into a number of attractively curvatious three-dimensional forms.

  • A novel system that appropriates common cyclonic technology into a passive wall component, Airbrick is an invention that aids in air purification for buildings and architectural structures. By integrating this passive air-filtering system into the architecture, we eliminate the need for a secondary system that occupies space and requires expertise to install and maintain. Therefor, this building component can be utilized almost anywhere regardless of infrastructure or wealth. Testing of the bricks has shown that such a wall can successfully eliminate dust, pollen, car exhaust particulates and other harmful particles from the air, providing people with better interior air quality. This brick was designed with the end goal to make fabrication kits widely available in third world countries with poor air quality. Patent pending.

  • [volition] : the power to make your own choices or decisions.

By setting up a grid of connection points for people to build upon, a permanent infrastructure is established to accommodate temporary scaffolding that will eventually frame social interaction. Ephemeral in nature, the framework allows for transient activities to take place such as markets, playgrounds, performance spaces or simply places to be. This inflection in the path draws attention, diverts people, and through intrigue brings life back to the restad rambla. This array of vertical piles serves as furnishing, as skin and as an urban grove - bringing color, life and volume back to the site. Modular in nature, the project can move and change with the surrounding social and urban fabric, thus becoming a diagram showcasing the change in population, interests and time.

  • The proximity to the bluff and the adjacent pier provides an almost 360 degree view of this unique site, situated right on the beach. This datum, combined with the flat nature of the area informed the design of the Santa Monica Aquarium into a sculptural element that flows in and out of the landscape. A series of ramps meander through the exhibits, providing a fluid circulation for people to experience the underwater world. Pre-cast concrete panels contain perforations of varying diameter and placement, dictated by the amount of daylight required by each of the different tanks. The resulting architectural skin is an expression of the exhibits within. A long, sloping plaza connects the beach to the lower level of the aquarium, providing the people of Santa Monica a place to gather, play and meet people as well as hold events.

    FORM

The form of the building is evocative of waves crashing over the shore. The shell-like skin protects the spaces below and swoops into the landscape in a uid motion. Both sides of the building thus ow into the surrounding sand, integrating the building with its surroundings.

    PLAZA

A depression in the landscape accommodates a long, shallow ramp that connects the beach to the lower level of the building, where a restaurant is located. This incline opens up the front of the building, enabling all oors to have a view of the ocean while keeping the overall height of the building to a modest two stories above ground as to not over-shadow the pier. This public space is versatile and can be used for many events such as concerts, assemblies or movie projections.

    COAST

The building is U-shaped in order to maximize views of the ocean. Visitors circulate along meandering ramps that places them in-between the coast and the tanks. This condition enables visitors to relate the exhibits back to their natural habitat.

    PIER

The skin of the building forms an over-lapping condition that creates an opening facing the pier. Once visitors have made it to the top oor, they are rewarded with a projecting view of the whole of Santa Monica pier, a major landmark for the area. A viewing platform offers an opportunity to rest and people watch.

  • PERFORATIONS - The different programs all have varying requirements in terms of light intensity. This is expressed architecturally in the skin of the building. The parametric nature of the perforations enabled the spaces within to dictate the diameter and placement of each opening. Varying from 2 to 2 in diameter, the perforations regulate how much light is filtered into the spaces below. Areas such as the auditorium or the deep sea exhibit require almost complete darkness whereas the touch pools, viewing platform and restaurant allow for more daylight.

  • BYPARKEN CHILDRENS CULTURE PAVILION

    11 14Fall 2014 - Danish Institute for Study Abroad

    East - West section

The proposed underground pavilion is a place to withdraw and escape the surrounding visual noise created by the glossy buildings, all competing with each other for attention. The concept of embedded culture is primarily a reaction to the site; a very cold, artificial environment that is distracting and exhausting.

Taking the typology of one of the existing mounds and inverting it to create a depression in the park, the pavilion is then inserted into the ground, bridging the created void. The pavilion is viewed as an escape from the area, a retreat. It becomes a place to ponder, contemplate and learn about other cultures through their different takes on childrens illustrations; as it is all too easy to loose touch with art and culture amidst the menial tasks and routines of the every-day.

    SECTION A

  • Just another walk in the park...

The nature of the site - encircled with urban residential high-rise buildings - commends attention to the compositional placement of the new pavilion within the park. A network of eyes monitoring the park almost 360 requires a pleasing aerial view of the project embedded into its place. An El Lissitzky-esk approach was taken here, treating the park like a canvas already filled with harsh linearity (paths) and scattered circular forms (mounds). The pavilion, utilizing the existing language and typology, thus inserts itself into the overall composition.

  • PLAY ROOM - A field of extruded, kid-sized nooks provide different sensory stimulations to be explored by meandering around and through them. Children can escape, explore, interact and create in a world scaled to the tiny human.

TREE PAVILION - A water-catchment scheme is set into place at the bottom of the pit allowing for water to be reused in the building, creating a closed loop both sustainable and economically appealing.

  • SECTION B

The pavilion, treated as an extension of the paths in the park, is experienced along continuous swooping ramps. This architectural promenade culminates in the center of the void; one of the arms projecting out and over the trees planted below.

This serene and poetic space allows you to be amongst a planted grove, removed from the hyper-activities of the park above. A covered deck allows users to sit and read amongst the trees in all weather. The adjacent space is open and flexible to accommodate any eventual needs such as parties, fund-raisers, lectures, etc. Heavy white curtains allow control of the lighting and its directionality.
