Tyson Chandler will be the first to tell you he likes doing the dirty work, is proud of the fact that he can control a game on the defensive end and admires perhaps the greatest defense-and-rebounding center in NBA history, Bill Russell.

So it’s no accident that in his season and a half in New York, the 2012 recipient of the Defensive Player of the Year Award has played an integral role in transforming the Knicks from one of the league’s worst defensive teams into one that at this writing ranked ninth in points allowed (95.8). The fact that he can also rebound in double figures (11.2 per game as of mid-February, sixth in the league) and provide adequate scoring (11.4 ppg) makes him the perfect complement for the more offensive-minded Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire on a Knicks team eyeing the top playoff seed in the Eastern Conference.

He also joined some elite company in early February when he put together three straight games of 20 or more rebounds, becoming the first player to accomplish the feat since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1971 and the first Knick to do so since Willis Reed in 1969-70. Coincidentally Reed, a Chandler fan, acquired the big man when he was vice president of basketball operations for the New Orleans Hornets in 2006.

Chandler and the Knicks can be seen in action Thursday, March 7, on TNT, when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder.

If you want to know where to find the best eats after the sun goes down, Mikey Roe is your man.

The expert on late-night dining – the decidedly unfancy kind – begins a tour of six U.S. cities when the Travel Channel series “Feed the Beast” premieres Wednesday, March 6.

In the first two half-hour episodes, airing back to back, Roe gets literal and figurative tastes of San Francisco and Austin, Texas, by sampling the general night life and seeking the top local foods. Warning: Seeing the overstuffed burritos and fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches may trigger your hunger.

“I wanted people to see that if they hadn’t been to that city, this is what a night out there could be like,” the good-humored Roe explains. “You could see the heartbeat of the city, then bring the food element in. Depending on your taste, you may not be into the giant burritos, but there are options for everybody. We show as many of them as we can.”

In that sense, “Feed the Beast” reflects a shoot-from-the-hip style, with Roe and his crew often diverting to eateries they’ve just discovered.

“That’s what we always wanted this to be,” he maintains, “a little bit on the fly, more documentary-style and finding what goes on along the way. We have places we wanted to hit, but I may come across something that takes me on a detour. I may see a food truck I wasn’t planning on going to, and I’m like, ‘Let’s go check that out! I’m not going to pass that up.’ ”

At the same time, Roe acknowledges having a production budget and deadlines to meet.

“There are rules from the people above,” he notes, “but if there’s time, we’ll pop over to some place that wasn’t scheduled. And sometimes it will make it into the show, and sometimes it won’t. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be, and it just wasn’t good enough TV. Other times, there’s the real and the natural and the fun that you get out of people ... especially the characters you find late at night.”

What are you currently reading?“It’s called ‘The Click Moment,’ and it’s about the moment where luck and skill collide ... . I’m a huge fan of the TV series ‘Lost,’ and in part, it talks about how that show came to be. It has really amazing, cool stories.”What did you have for dinner last night?“I had Indian food. I had chicken tikka masala and basmati rice.”What is your next project?“I have a couple of others I’m working on, but can’t really talk about yet.”When was the last vacation you took – where and why?“It was Tulum, Mexico, to relax on the beach, scuba dive and visit the Mayan temples.”

Late-night food specialties feed Travel Channel’s new ‘Beast’

Each Christmas and Easter season, History and other cablenets air a number of documentaries on various aspects of the Bible, usually featuring talking-head experts and iffy-looking dramatic re-creations.

Often these productions take a skeptical look at the historicity or accuracy or veracity of biblical accounts, as if the last thing in the world a documentary would want to be seen doing is taking anything in the Bible at face value.

But skepticism was the last thing on the minds of reality TV mogul Mark Burnett (“The Apprentice,” “Survivor”) and his wife, actress Roma Downey (“Touched by an Angel”), when they set out as executive producers of “The Bible,” airing Sundays from March 3 to March 31, which is Easter Sunday this year.

Joined by their faith and a love for the sacred writings of Judaism and Christianity, they have spearheaded a 10-part dramatic series that spans the Old and New Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation, capturing the full sweep of the biblical narrative.

Burnett recalls an anecdote from Roman Catholic Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga – one of those eligible to vote on the replacement for outgoing Pope Benedict XVI.

“He said, ‘Thank you. It’s about this time that Discovery Channel, History channel will put things on that sow doubts in the minds of people who do believe in the Bible. I’m so grateful for History channel and to you and Roma for putting this on during Holy Week. It’s the opposite of what’s traditionally being done around this time.’

“So that was nice.”


“RED DAWN”

Foreign invaders turn young Americans into freedom fighters in this less-effective remake of the 1984 adventure, delayed from release long enough by MGM’s financial troubles for stars Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson to have had respective successes with “Thor” and “The Hunger Games” first (though they made this before those). Interestingly, the nationality of the enemies was altered digitally after filming, so as not to upset some overseas exhibitors. “THE INTOUCHABLES”

Based on a true story, this seriocomic French film by writer-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano earned international raves for its two stars ... veteran actor Francois Cluzet as a rich aristocrat suddenly incapacitated while paragliding, and Omar Sy (who won the Cesar, France’s equivalent of the Oscar, as best actor for this) as the much younger and more street-wise fellow hired to care for him. Though others are in the cast, the picture very much belongs to those actors, and their unlikely yet fabulous teamwork justifies it. “PLAYING FOR KEEPS”

Gerard Butler’s charisma does much – if ultimately not enough overall – for this comedy-drama, as he plays a former soccer star whose personal and professional lives

have taken downturns. He tries to put both back on track as he attempts to win back his ex-wife (Jessica Biel) while becoming the coach of his son’s sports team. “LAY THE FAVORITE”

He’s back on “Die Hard” territory these days, but Bruce Willis has been doing lots of other work lately, an example being this comedy casting him as a veteran gambler who gets an unlikely “business” partner. She’s a former stripper played by Rebecca Hall (“The Town”), and her expertise at

“A DARK TRUTH”

In one of her first major roles since the end of “Desperate Housewives,” Eva Longoria is teamed with Oscar winner Forest Whitaker as married environmental activists in this drama. They get into big trouble while trying to prove a powerful corporation is linked to a devastating massacre in Ecuador, prompting an ex-CIA man (Andy Garcia) to accept the mission to rescue them. “WRECK-IT RALPH”

A video-game villain (voice of John C. There are plenty of fun nods to classic characters as Ralph attempts to show he’s not just the nemesis of the more-embraced Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer, “30 Rock”). Vikings have gotten a bad rap.So says Michael Hirst, creator and writer of History’s epic

nine-part series “Vikings,” premiering Sunday, March 3. The show explores the complex society of the Norseman as it was near the end of the eighth century. Yes, the Vikings were often large, hulking figures who specialized in violent conquests of neighboring lands while taking pillaging and plundering to new heights. But they were merely surviving in a violent world, and their story hasn’t fully been told, Hirst says, because the Vikings themselves never told it.

“We’ve always represented the Vikings as the other, because their history was written by Christian monks, who wrote propaganda about the Vikings – how violent they were, how terrifying, how awful their gods were,” says Hirst, who has shown his yen for history with “Elizabeth” and “The Tudors.” “We’ve taken on board that propaganda, because it’s never really been challenged. What interested me was to go into the Viking world picture, into their gods, into their religion, their rituals. As the season goes on, you understand where the gods came from, you

understand the attraction of the pagan worldview and the pagan gods. It’s interesting for, let’s say, a North American, largely Christian audience for the first time to be presented the pagan worldview that they overthrew, that they replaced, and what it meant. Intellectually and emotionally, it’s an interesting ride.”

It’s a ride the audience takes largely through the exploits of Ragnar Lothbrok, a historical figure who nonetheless has taken on mythical status as centuries have passed. Sure, Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) could sack a village or monastery with the best of them, but he also had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Believing he was descended from the Viking god Odin, Ragnar defied the conservative, self-serving policies of his local ruler, Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne), by sailing west to new lands, using new navigation techniques.

The earl, though, does not take such insubordination lightly, and along with his ambitious wife, Siggy (Jessalyn Gilsig), schemes to make an example of Ragnar for anyone who would challenge his authority.

He wanted to go the Galapagos, and he wanted to direct “The Tempest” in Vegas.

Even though you’re the partner in your duo who does the talking publicly, you seem pretty quiet. Are you?

My mom and dad never raised their voices. It was unheard of, and I have raised my children as such.

You seem melancholy. Is it tough to be away from your family?

Doing “Celebrity Apprentice,” I am away for four weeks. My son asked if he could be on it to see Daddy. Before this, only two weeks was the longest time (he was separated from family). I still won’t go longer than two weeks.

Could you explain why you have a red nail?

That’s my dad’s ring and my mom’s nail polish. It was done originally to mock my mother, then it turned into affection, and now it is a tribute.

We’re riding on an open-air bus, and people are pointing up at us, taking photos; some are screaming. Does it feel a little like you are in a circus?

In 1971, they did the Loud family. With the writers strike, they created this form of unscripted television – for better or worse. And I fear for worse. The early part of this century will be judged by this. If it were the ’60s and ’70s, I would have wanted to be on “The Beverly Hillbillies” and “The Monkees.” This show defines our time. It is ego depletion.
