As the temperatures drop, it’s important to prepare for the winter months in order to avoid costly damages later on. here are just a few things every homeowner should check:

Gutters & Downspouts - Clean frequently to prevent buildup of leaves and other debris and check that water drains properly and doesn’t pool.

Windows & Doors - Check your home around windows and doors for air leaks. if you find a leak, install weather stripping to prevent drafts. By having these leaks repaired can save you money on your energy bill during the cold months.

plumbing - Ensure that all pipes are well-insulated to prevent freezing and bursting. Also drain outside hoses and close the shutoff valves to outside faucets and waterlines.

Generators - if you have a gas powered generator you keep on hand for possible power outages, make sure you have containers of gas for the generator. Keep the gasoline stored in a garage or outside storage unit. Never store gasoline inside your home. Test your generator

and make sure it is in good working order.

Decorations - make sure all electrical holiday decorations have tight connection. if possible, use 3-prong plugs and cords. The use of 2-prong adapters, which permit 3-prong plugs to be used in 2-prong outlets, doesn’t always provide grounding to protect against shock. unplug decorations when not in use. use of extension cords should be temporary. Electric cords, including extension cords, should never be bundled together or run under rugs and carpet.

Chimney & Fireplace - have a professional inspect and clean your chimney and consider installing a carbon monoxide detector near the fireplace. if you already have a carbon monoxide detector, check and replace the batteries. in colder months when the air is trapped indoors for longer periods, this is an important step to make sure the air is healthy.

Landscaping - Trim any tree limbs that are dangerously close to power lines or your house. We all know what damage heavy snow or ice can cause!28
