The Meermin was taken over by the slaves being carried into captivity from their native Madagascar. Many of the crew were killed in the uprising and the slaves then negotiated with the remaining crew to steer the ship back to Madagascar. However, the ship was beached at Struisbaai on the Cape coast near Agulhas, after the crew convinced the slaves that the land they could see was indeed their homeland. The slaves were re-enslaved; and the two surviving leaders were sent to Robben Island where Masavana (a wealthy Madagascan farmer who had been invited by his king to inspect the Meermin and was stripped of his fine clothes and jewellery by the king's men en route to the ship and then sold as a slave) only survived two years of labouring in the lime quarry before dying; and the other, Koesaaij, was still on the "Bandietrolle" fourteen years later. The senior sailors on the ship lost their jobs, but most of the crew regained their positions with the VOC.

The AFRICANA NOTES AND NEWS were first issued under wartime austerity measures in order to support and to disseminate the work of the Africana Museum, Johannesburg. The publication would keep interested people countrywide abreast of recent acqusitions and the Museum's needs. The preservation and description of items of Africana became the focus of the publication. The articles were always of a high standard and to contribute was seen as prestigious. When the Museaum moved, the publication ceased. A list of contributors down the years is a "who's who" of South African academic and learned life.

James Barry Munnik Hertzog (1866-1942) was a Boer general during the second South African War and went on to become Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa from 1924 to 1939. Throughout his life he encouraged the development of the Afrikaner culture, determined to protect the Afrikaner from British influence. He was appointed Minister of Justice in the newly formed Union of South Africa and held office until 1912. His antagonism to imperialism and to Premier Botha led to a ministerial crisis. In 1913 he led a secession of Boers and anti-imperialists from the South African Party. In the years following WWI, he headed the opposition to the government of General Smuts. In the general election of 1924, his National Party defeated Smuts' South African Party and formed a coalition government with the South African Labour Party, which became known as the Pact Government. In 1934, the National Party and the South African Party merged to form the United Party, with Hertzog as Prime Minister and leader of the new party. The civil service was opened up to Afrikaners through the promotion of bilingualism, while a widening of the suffrage was carried out, with the enfranchisement of white women. On 4 September 1939, the United Party caucus refused to accept Hertzog's stance of neutrality in WW II and deposed him in favour of Smuts.

The son of a wealthy financier, F.C. Selous (1851-1917) was born in Regent's Park, London. After schooling at Rugby, where he excelled at sport (particularly cricket), Selous travelled to southern Africa aged nineteen. In 1872 he gained permission from Lobengula to hunt in his lands; which he did for the next eighteen years. It is this period which forms the backdrop to this book, one of the most readable of all the 19th century hunting and trekking accounts. Selous collected over five hundred specimens for the Natural History Museum in London and two animals were named after him. He received the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographic Society. He was

awarded the DSO for service in East Africa in WWI. He was shot by a sniper near the Rufiji River in modern day Tanzania and is buried at the spot. This area falls within the present day Selous Game Reserve. He was a friend of Rhodes, President Roosevelt and Baden-Powell and the founder of the Shikar Club (a big game hunters' club that met in the Savoy Hotel). Selous' piercing eyes, his reserved, humble manner and upright bearing, together with his beard and bush hat, made him the epitome of the romantic portrait of an English big game hunter and colonial. He took tea rather than other beverages and when living in England made sure he always played in the cricket game Worplesdon vs Big Game Hunters! Various authors are said to have modelled their central characters on Selous.

128 Short, Philip. BANDA. London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1974. 357 p. Paper covered boards, d.w. R 450

Short was a freelance journalist at the time of writing. Hastings Kamuzu Banda (1898-1997) talked to the "white South" and thereby lost credibility in the rest of Africa, where he had previously been regarded as a leading post-independence figure. He was rejected as a renegade who had sold his nationalist principles for economic assistance. Banda fostered a belief that only he could control the "children" of Malawi; founded "Kamuzuism" and garnered enormous wealth, some of which was sponsored by South Africa. He ruled Malawi from 1963 until forced from office in 1994 when western donors demanded a more democractic form of governance.
