Berita RSC Royal Selangor Club

despite the passing of the Motion of No Confidence, i.e. Mr. Povananthi-ran Maniam, Mr Aethiraju, Mr. Harcharan Singh, Prof Dr A. Selva-nathan, Dato Margali, Mr. Telak Chan, Mr Sukhdev Singh, Mr. Abdul Fattah and Mr. Cheong Cheng Onn. Mr. Mike Soo, a member of the then GC, had stepped down immediately after the announcement of the result of the passing of the vote of no confidence on 28.2.2017. At the same time I had also filed an application for an interlocutory injunction to be issued to restrain the former members of the GC from holding themselves out or carrying on as members of the GC pending disposal of the main Application. Pursuant to the injunc-tion application, on 9.3.2017, 3 Interim Caretakers (Mr. Alex Abra-ham, Mr. Chris Syer and Mr. Harjeet Singh) were appointed to take over the day to day operations of the Club. An injunction was also issued to restrain the 9 former mem-bers of the GC from acting as or holding themselves as members of the GC.

Before the Hearing of the case on 25.4.2013, Mr. Sukhdev Singh and Mr. Telak Chan conceded to the Application. However, 7 remaining members of the GC continued to oppose the Application.

After hearing parties, on 13.6.2017, the High Court, amongst others, made the following Orders:-

1) It is Declared that the previous President and members of the GC were lawfully removed as President and members of the GC of the Royal Selangor Club when the Motion of No Confidence was passed and upon the results being announced on 28.2.2017;

The Club has gone through a rather disconcerting period over the last few months filled with much uncer-tainty. Following the EGM on 28 February, 2017, two Suits were filed in Court to decide who was lawfully in charge of the management of the Club. Both Suits were finally concluded on 13 June, 2017. I had previously sent out by email a Circular to members informing you of the outcome of one of the Suits. However, inadvertently, I had omit-ted to inform you of the outcome of the other Suit. For completeness, I now provide you with a summary of both Suits.

BackgroundOn 28 February, 2017 an EGM was held at the Club to consider the passing of a vote of no confidence and removal the then President and General Committee (“GC”). The vote of no confidence was passed. However, the previous GC took the position that they were not removed and refused to yield the floor to enable an election to be done for a new President or GC. A former President of the Club, Tan Sri Dato V C George, then took over the meeting as an “agent of necessity” and proceeded to conduct an election of an Interim President. Pursuant to that exercise, I was elected as the Interim President.

1st SuitWhen the deposed President and GC refused to vacate their offices, I then commenced an action in the Kuala Lumpur High Court against them in my capacity as a member of the Club and as the elected Interim President on 6.3.2017. In this regard, I filed an Application against 9 members of the previous GC who had refused to step down

2) It is Declared that I was lawfully and properly elected as Interim President of the Royal Selangor Club on 28.2.2017;

3) The 3 Interim Caretakers are to continue functioning in their appointed capacities until the next AGM of the Club; and

4) The remaining 7 members of the GC who contested the Application is to pay costs of RM10,000 each;

2nd SuitAt or about the same time, Mr Aethiraju had filed an action, in his purported capacity as “the Public Officer” of the Club, against me for amongst others, Orders to the effect, to declare that all 10 members of the previous GC were still the lawful GC despite the passing of the vote of No Confidence and declare my election as Interim President as unlawful. Mr. Aethiraju had taken steps to register himself as the “Public Officer” of the Club on 3.3.2017 with the Registrar of Societies. The action against me was then filed on 6.3.2017 by Mr. Aethiraju claiming to act on behalf of the Club as its “Public Officer”.

INTERIM PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

April - June 2017 5

staff who had carried on working in their respective roles despite not being sure of who to answer to for a period.

Moving Forward – AGM – 30th July, 2017 As we come near to the next AGM of the Club that is scheduled on 30.7.2017, I would like to appeal to all members to refrain from forming camps. This only leads to polarisa-tion of the membership into almost tribal like warring camps. There appears to be a growing trend amongst some of the aspirants for positions to align themselves to some who claim to be “rainmakers” with a purportedly large vote bank at their disposal, in times of election. Inevitably, deals are struck, between the candidate and the “rainmaker”, that would take effect in the event the candidate succeeds in getting elected. This is simply unhealthy. Splitting up into camps and making “deals” only lead to more problems in the future.

In the same vein, it is also time for the Club to move on. The bearing of grudges and a desire to exact revenge is simply not productive. It is time to bury the hatchet and move on. The Club is bigger than the individuals and personalities that are in it.

I simply hope that we can return to the founding principles of the Club as a premier social and sports club. There is no need to state what these principles are, as otherwise we ought not be members of this Club. We regularly use the word “premier” and “gentleman’s club” when we speak about the Club. I believe that these adjectives are being used rather loosely and in a matter of fact manner without

I then filed an application to strike out the action on the basis that Mr. Aethiraju’s claim, that he was the “Public Officer” of the Club was misconceived. This action was then withdrawn on 13.6.2017 with Mr. Aethiraju ordered to pay RM8,000 as costs in his personal capacity.

Accordingly, the 2 actions that were pending in Court that arose directly from the EGM of 28.2.2017 have been resolved. At time of writing this message on 21.6.2017, there has been no appeal.

Interim CaretakersAt this juncture, I would like to express my gratitude and apprecia-tion to the untiring efforts of the 3 Interim Caretakers who have been effectively, stewarding the ship since 9.3.2017. They have effective-ly been doing the work of 10 persons who are supposed to be in the GC. They have performed their roles as Interim Caretakers with sincerity and integrity. There are some complaints, and even complaints made in Court about the exercise of their discretion with regard certain matters. However, by virtue of the fact that the High Court has seen it fit to re-appoint them, has reaffirmed decisions made by them in the course of their appoint-ment. I truly believe that at all times, the Interim Caretakers have performed their duties and made decisions in the best interest of the Club.

StaffIt would be amiss of me to fail to express gratitude and appreciation to the staff of the Club, lead by the General Manager, who has carried on working throughout this period of uncertainty without complaint. In this regard, I would like to thank all

regard to reality. It is time that we accept the reality that much of the conduct and behaviour observed in the Club in recent times is less than that that is acceptable in any civil society. The time has come to stop simply mouthing that the Club is a “premier” Club or one of the oldest “gentleman’s clubs” in the country and stop living in its past glories.

We have to take stock of the reality that we, the members, have allowed the Club to slide down the slippery slope towards ignominy. If we are not mindful of voting in the right people as our leaders not only at the coming AGM but also in the future, and always remaining vigilant of those elected, we really would be sliding down that slope very fast.

The Club is steeped in history and tradition. We have had some of the finest sports personalities to grace this planet gracing our fields and courts over the years. The Club has played host to many luminaries and dignitaries in its history. We have had some of the finest people, from ministers to judges, leading the Club. The time has arrived for you, the members, to bring the Club to back to where it belongs, as the truly premier social and sports club in the country. The Club is in your hands. I urge all of you who can vote, to exercise that privilege and to do so wisely.

Mr. Alex Nandaseri De SilvaInterim President

Berita RSC Royal Selangor Club GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

On the 28th of February 2017 the Extraordinary General Meeting attended by over 700 members voted for the motion of No Confi-dence against the General Commit-tee. Notwithstanding the technicali-ties of what should happen next and to cut a long story short, the Club is (at the time of writing) awaiting the results of a Court action initially scheduled on 25th April 2017 and further postponed to 30th May 2017, then to 9th June 2017 and finally to 13th June 2017.

Until such time that this court battle is settled, the Court has appointed three senior members of the Club to act on behalf of the General Com-mittee of the RSC and assist the management to carry the daily operations of the Club.

January and February were good months in terms of the number of members and their guests visiting the Club. F&B outlets were posting excellent results in terms of attend-ance and the Chinese Restaurant at Dataran experienced record month-ly sales in February, grossing approximately RM148,000.00. In terms of our accounts, the January and February to date profit stands at RM 169,520.38 For the month of March though we have seen a steady fall in attendees and revenues have fallen by as much as 10% as compared to the same month in 2016. Lower patronisa-tion and less event bookings have added to the decreasing revenue trend. At the time off writing the patronisation of our F&B Outlets for the month of April does not look any better.

It’s only three months into the year and our Sports Sections are in full swing with the Cricket Section

representing the RSC at the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club’s (CCFC) 225th Anniversary celebrations. The Hash Section, as always, remains very active with their Chinese New Year run held in February and a CSR run. Our Tennis Section has introduced the Junior Tennis Programme (JTP) while the Swimming Section is in full gear with a number of events slotted in for 2017. The RSC Chess Juniors Open took place on 26th March. As part of our SOP, the Sports Sections held their respective AGM’s, passed their accounts for the year 2016 and voted in their new Conveners.

On the social side, we had the hugely successful Chinese New Year Ball complete with the tradi-tional Lion Dance, professional singers and stage shows. I must, at this point, thank the organising Committee for this event. This stalwart group of members worked very hard to make this event a huge success. The Dance Sport Section held their ‘Gong Hei Fatt Choy” celebrations and the Musical & Arts Sections sang their way into becom-ing the Champions at the Annual Inter Club Karaoke Competition. Read all about it in the upcoming pages of the Berita RSC.

Our F&B promotions continue with the ‘least expensive’ beers in town with Tiger Beer at RM7.00+ and Carlsberg at RM7.50nett. The Whisky of the Month promotions has been well taken up and we will continue to offer good quality whis-kies at excellent prices on a monthly basis. The Mutton Fried Rice lunch promotion coupled with our new menu will hopefully bring in the numbers back to the Verandah at Dataran and Coffee House at Kiara. Our Ramadhan promotions are

already being advertised and our Chinese Restaurant promises to offer a slew of goodies for the coming months. F&B is the heart and soul of our revenue in this Club and we hope that our members will continue to patronise the Club and also hold your social events here as well.

At the time of writing we just had a very successful Staff Annual Party. I would like to thank all the members for their contributions and all our sponsors as well. Awards were given for Best Employee, 25 years’ service and more than 35 years’ Service as well. I must also thank the interim caretakers and some of the members who joined the party to serve drinks at the bar and dish out the food. The staff had a wonderful time and once again , om behalf of all the staff at RSC, a very big Thank You to our members.

Until such time that the ‘administra-tive issue’ in the Club is settled, there will be no capex work carried out. It is hoped that once the situa-tion normalises we can commence with the capex works, some of which are much needed as part of our maintenance programme.

April - June 2017 7

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

As you well know the prices of items overall have increased quite extensively and some of our menu items were not yielding even mini-mal profit to cover our costs. Prices of items such as seafood including smoked salmon, tiger prawns etc. and even basic items have increased, some items by more than 50%. The Interim Caretakers noting the complaints from members have instructed that the new menu is to pulled back and the old menu and the prices therein is to be followed. This has been done.

For the past 133 years the Club has had its share of adversity and has always come out smelling like roses. Hopefully, after the Court decision, we will be back in the spotlight for all the right reasons. In the words of our Past President, Y. A. Justice Datuk Harun M. Hashim “Lets us all be mindful of our past and on it build new traditions for the future. This is your Club. Take good care of it. ”

Mr. Ramesh MenonGeneral Manager

There have been some complaints received on the new menu and the prices therein. Please be assured that it is not our intention to raise prices arbitrarily. The new prices on the menu have been worked out to give only a 20% profit to the Club for all food items. The new prices have been worked on only after much work was put in to reduce the cost of goods purchased. The last time that the menu prices were reviewed was in 2014, at which time some of the previous menu items remained unchanged.

recruit Young MS Danny (25) is the exception to this ageist policy and Datuk Bill Davidson (age supplied) is also exempt as, armed with cane, he is to be our non-playing Disci-pline and Tardiness Monitor.

On arrival at destination at the inconvenient hour of 1:30am, we are met by our Tour Liaison, a young and enthusiastic fellow called Sagnik, who bears a worrying resemblance to Scooby Doo’s ill-kempt hippy sidekick; the nickname Shaggy is immediately applied and graciously ignored by its new owner.

After some late-night room service and restorative stengahs in the Man-ager’s room, we retired, eager to see what the morning will bring. It has been an eventful trip so far: the roads; the noise; the driving; the heat; the exotic smells; the Australi-an Hari Krishna dude begging for money – and all this before even leaving KLIA2….

Thursday is a free day before the tournament begins and a few of us set off to visit the home and eventu-al resting place of Mother Teresa, which is certainly an emotional experience, especially when Param takes Charlie’s photo and unwitting-ly cuts out the Saint’s statue!.

This is followed by an unsuccessful quest to find the Black Hole of Calcutta (how did those early folk survive without Google?), during which we walk along two sides of the very large square that is Fort William without, however, uncover-ing our Grail.

We go instead for a tour of the magnificent Victoria Memorial Hall and Gardens, an impressive pile commissioned by Lord Curzon in 1906, with subscriptions from local lords and the common people, who were, according to the signs, appar-ently ‘grateful’ and ‘delighted’ to be of assistance. I’m sure they were made entirely of marble, the materi-als came from Jodphur – the other side of the country – and would have taken a 17-mile-long train to transport. Mind-boggling stuff. Once again, the railways were, apparently, very pleased to do it for free, something to do with the ‘affection held for them by Queen Victoria herself’. Hmmm……

We lunch in a darkened restoran dan bar next to the Grand Oberoi, where the boys manage to convince the waiters and chef that Young MS Danny is the latest IPL attraction for the Bengal Tigers (although it becomes increasingly apparent over the course of the weekend that the attraction is stronger for the Bengal cougar).

The end of February heralded the start of a year-long celebration by the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club, the oldest cricket club outside of Britain, to mark its 225th Anni-versary and RSC, a mere babe by comparison, was honoured to be invited to participate in an eight-team, six-a-side tournament to kick off proceedings.

For the uninitiated, Sixes cricket is the quickest form of the game comprising…um…six players, of whom five must bowl one over each, while batsmen retire at 30, meaning lots of big hitting and endless running for both sides – physical fitness, strength, agility and stamina are an absolute prereq-uisite, which begs the question why I am now waiting to board the midnight flight to the City of Joy with Amarjeet, Devindran, Param, Rueben, Sitha, Charlie, and Kim Hing, all the wrong side of 50 or, in some cases, 60. RSC TOUR TO KOLKATA (23rd to 27th FEBRUARY 2017)

I digress…..cue lots of photos, speciality food and requests for signatures. The net draws in when, after a couple of hours, the staff want to know his full name, which information we are, of course, not at liberty to divulge. To avoid any more probing questions, I go into the back of the restaurant for a quick ciggie, where there are lots of beer crates with ‘Handle With Care’ warnings. One wonders if this is because of the fragile nature of the glass contained therein or the 8% alcohol factor.

Word spreads to the Oberoi that RSC has an IPL player, triggering much despondent drinking amongst the Bangladeshi teams, who have booked out the whole of the hotel with a 300-strong contingent of over-45-year-old, ex-Test players, supporters, families, feudal retain-ers and manservants.

After lunch, we repair to the hotel for a quick freshen-up before a tour of Eden Gardens, where we are lucky enough to watch MS Dhoni (no relation to our MS) practising in the nets in preparation for a state game on Sunday, and are invited to sit in the comfy armchairs in the Home Team changing room, which is a real thrill.

Back to the hotel again to change for the Opening Night of the Tour-nament at CCFC. Much pre-tour thought and discussion over the course of a Very Long Time has gone into what we should wear for this occasion, mostly coming in one direction from Rueben: we settle on blazer with Club badge and tie, blue shirt and khaki trousers and, I must say, we look the part as we set off for the Club.

I’m not quite sure what I am expect-ing when we get there – a bunch of guys standing round in a facility like our Card Room draining mugs of Kingfisher before a bit of makan, perhaps – but we are, to a man, blown away by what confronts us as we enter the grounds: the entire field covered in tables and chairs, surrounded by food stalls; a large stage in front of the pavilion; laser beams strafing the sky, all being recorded by an overhead drone, which sometimes flits around and sometimes hovers and observes like something out of ‘Close Encouters’. Interesting speeches are given by

various luminaries including the Club President and ex-opening bat for India Arun Lal, who also conducts a Q and A session with ex-Test Captain Saurav Ganguly; and a very inspiring awards ceremony takes place for members of the Club who are former Internationals of many different sports. Then dinner and more socialising with myriad warm, welcoming Bengalis and other folk from all over the

Sub-continent and beyond until the small hours, including meeting a Dhakan fellow alumnus from my old school in England – what are the odds?

Gosh, all this and the cricket hasn’t even started! We shall get there….

9:30am Friday morning, and Rueben is AWOL, still in bed after a night of over-excited over-indul-gence. Our first game is against Chittagong CC and HT has the honour of taking his stance on a pristine wicket and facing the first ball of the Tournament. We post 69

for 1, a commendable score, with HT retiring on 33 not out. Excellent overs from TKH and Sitha, but then we suffer calamitous 2nd and 4th overs and Chittagong hit a four off the last ball of the game, bowled by Param in an otherwise frugal over, to win a very close contest – indeed, the closest we come to winning a game in what is fast revealing itself to be a competition of extremely high standards.

Game 2 vs Bombay CC: HT retires again on 34 not out and RSC post 62, which Bombay pass in the 4th over after TKH is destroyed for 28 in his over by one terrifying Goan State batsman, a certain Robin D’Souza. One important factor in the differences between us and our first two opponents, which every-one is too polite to mention, is that HT keeps retiring off the very last ball of the innings, whereas the oppo openers tend to retire after only 10 balls. Just saying…..

Game 3: Our hosts CCFC win the toss and elect to bat first, surely in a bid to increase their run rate by…um….a lot. They set us 93 to win, which should help their cause a bit. We are all out for 43. We almost take our only two wickets of the Tournament: Young MS Danny plucks a nice catch on the boundary off HT’s bowling, turns to milk the applause from the crowd and steps over the boundary rope for a six. Then Rueben (finally compos mentis at 3:00pm), with both batsmen at the same end after a horrible mix-up and with the stumps less than an arm’s length away and at his mercy, has only to knock the bails off….and somehow contrives to miss by eight yards. His plaintive excuse, which I record here verba-tim, with the sweat coruscating on his snooker ball head and running into his bloodshot eyes, is met with universal, double tea-potted disbe-lief: ‘I saw the stumps….but then I saw another set of stumps next to them and went for those instead….’

Ours is the last game of the day and we return thereafter to our hotel and its salubrious rooftop bar and atten-tive waiters for a couple of refresh-ers before dinner, again, at the

Calcutta Club, followed by Sitha’s one-man song and dance routine. The crowd mistakes him for some sort of mystic fakir and throws money at him, perhaps thinking that he is about to hypnotise a king cobra or climb up a length of rope and disappear. Some of the team wish he would.

Saturday, 10am: Game 4 – semi-fi-nal of RSC vs Royal Bangkok Sports Club: we lose but, regretta-bly, owing to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or some other self-induced malady, nobody can remember the scores. It wasn’t close.

In the afternoon and evening there is a T20 match between an All Stars XI, for which TKH and Young MS Danny are picked, and the CCFC, so the rest of us settle in to watch some astounding batting from both sides – really a treat to watch under lights, especially when accompanied by bottomless glasses of Blue Riband Tango Lemon Gin and Indian Tonic.

The awards ceremony is a jolly affair and Charlie makes a very well-received speech and does an excellent job with Amarjeet of presenting gifts on behalf of RSC to

several CCFC dignitaries. Celebra-tions and fellowship go on long into the night…..again.

You may have noticed that I haven’t mentioned who won the Tourna-ment or the T20. I think both were won by CCFC but, if I may be so crass as to use a well-worn cliché, cricket was the winner and so were we all: we may not have taken a wicket all Tournament, or won a game, and some of the team didn’t get to bat, but we all made lasting friendships on and off the pitch, with each other as well as the other teams and supporters, and the RSC was complimented by many on our spirit and the way in which we conducted ourselves.

Plans are afoot for the CCFC to tour RSC with cricket, tennis, hockey and ladies’ rugby teams, and I sincerely hope it comes to pass as I would love to reciprocate and repli-cate the warm generosity and unsur-passed welcome that we experi-enced from this prestigious Indian club in one of the most memorable and interesting cricket tours that many of us have had the privilege of being part of.

Dancesport Section organized the Chinese New Year Ball on 31 Jan to usher in the Year of Rooster. As the members were still in the New Year mood, this event was well attended by 120 participants.

The night began with the Choy San going round to all the tables to bless them with good fortune. Naturally, this was symbolically represented by a token present.

This was followed immediately by the highlight of the night - Lou Sang. As soon as Bob Yong finished his countdown, everyone frantically put the chopsticks into the plate and started to lift the contents into the air, amid the boisterous sounds of HO AH ! HUAT AH ! . It was just unimagi-nable the cacophony created by 120 people shouting at different timing.

After the band finished their first session, it was fun time. For the New Year Skit, we had Kon Cze Yan acting as the narrator and two couples acted out the traditional

practices from the first day until the ninth day of the Chinese New Year. The skit was both informative and entertaining at the same time.

The section bought a mini lion dance costume for one performer especially for this occasion. Each contestant was given the freedom to show how best the lion dance could be performed by one person alone.

Sarah Yusof was judged to be the best performer out of 5 contestants. Congratulation to Sarah.

As this is the Year of Rooster, it was only proper that we did not miss out the Chicken Dance. With about 50 participants arranged in 4 rows, everyone was having great fun dancing like chicken.

There was plenty of dancing and yum seng too during the night. All good things must come to an end. We had to bid goodbye to each other by midnight.

The RSC HASH has had a record of many FIRSTs -the first hash chapter to operate from within an estab-lished club, a complete inner city run – the annual Merdeka PUB CRAWL, a blood donation campaign with record donors and more recently a FEED THE NEEDY campaign in conjunction with the RSC Hash CNY 2017cele-bration run – which was held at the club after a long long while

The FEED THE NEEDY campaign was initiated to dispel the myth that hashers were just beer drinkers and merry makers and who didn’t care for the needy. So, in conjunction with the CNY festivity, hashers collaborated with the Friends of BMV to prepare hot meals for 250 homeless that includ-

ed old folks and an orphanage. It was also in keeping with the Chinese adage of ‘filial piety’ which we wanted to extend during the festivity.

Fellow hashers sacrificed their Sunday afternoon on 11th Feb 2017 to prepare and cook an array of vegetarian dishes which were later packed in boxes and distributed to the needy who came in droves to take their hot meal for the day. What a delight it was, to see the then President – Mr Poovi Maniam work with fellow hashers in the prepara-tion to cooking and distribution of the meals. A sense of melancholy and compas-sion overwhelmed us when we saw silver haired, wrinkled, old aged

grandpas and grandmas lining up for their meal and thanking us for our modest contribution. It is hoped we can continue this little act of kindness, whenever we can to remember the unfortunate and underprivileged.

To this end the club has pledged to sponsor another FEED THE NEEDY campaign later in the year and hashers, we are certain, will come together to do it again. We wish to record our thanks to Mr Poovi Maniam and Mr Harcharan Singh for their unflinching support and understanding towards our cause for the needy.

The following week - on Friday 17th Feb 2017, hashers turned up for the annual CNY celebration run, held at RSC Dataran. They were all primed for their ‘walk in the park’

When hashers returned to the club, they were ushered to the RSC Chinese Restaurant for the CNY dinner. The OC - Siimon Lim in his shortest opening speech thanked the gathering for their attendance and the Chinese Towkays and Tow Kay Sos for their sponsorship in cash and kind. It was feasting and celebration thereafter…

The then President and then Sports Chairman who were also in attend-ance expressed their gratitude to the hashers for organising the FEED the NEEDY campaign and later joined the hashers in the feasting at the Chinese restaurant. Hashers were

treated to a sumptuous dinner, complete with the traditional Yee Sang and the merry making took hashers late into the night from the restaurant to the lounge at the club. There was no shortage of drinks as the amber liquid and whisky flowed continuously throughout the night.

Hashers were seen relishing their ‘siew yuk’ and washing it down with their favourite beer before proceeding with their walk back to the club. We learnt that our host took karaoke-ing seriously, having their trainer regularly at their karaoke sessions to give them pointers. Their efforts paid off as Kulim Club was the 2016 Champion in the Northern Region Karaoke Competition. We partied with song, drinks and snacks till the wee hours of the following day, with no fear of drunk driving, as we all were roomed at the Club’s on-site chambers.

salt water pool isn’t added external-ly by you, but rather is created from chemical electrolysis that occurs within a salt water chlorinator or salt water generator that is part of the system. Because of the lower chlorine levels, salt water pools are less drying to the skin.

Benefits of Swimming in Saltwa-ter

Swimming in salt water cleanses and can soothe your skin, improve blood flow, and increase functions in your immune system. Salt water rejuvenates, exfoliates, and detoxi-fies skin, the largest organ in the human body. Salt water is also a natural moisturizer, since it increas-es our skin’s natural ability to retain moisture and promotes cellular regeneration.

When your skin feels good, your whole body feels good. When your skin is suffering, so, too, are you. If your skin is dry or itchy, swimming in salt water may be the simple solution. Studies have shown that salt water can help heal a myriad of skin disorders ranging from eczema and psoriasis to acne.

The Swim Section introduced swimming classes for adults in March 2017. The lessons were well received with ten (10) members signing-up for it from start. Mem-bers who are keen to learn swim-ming, can still join the sessions which are held every Wednesdays at 7.30 p.m. at our Kiara pool. The classes are taught by our experi-enced coach Jui, and is suited to individual’s ability – be it beginners or with some ability to swim. The fee is RM 100 a month (4 x 45 minutes a session) for section mem-bers.

Ahh, cool relaxing water on a 95-degree day. How awesome does that sound?

Are you a pool person, a lake person, or an ocean person? Anyway you look at it, when it's 95 degrees outside, any kind of water will do to cool off. Or will it?

Just in case you aren't near a lake or an ocean and are thinking about putting in a pool, let's investigate which kind of pool is the way to go for your lifestyle.

Salt Water Pools - How Do They Work?

Just to be clear, salt water pools do have chlorine in them, but the chlorine level is typically lower than a traditional chlorinated one. Additionally, the chlorine found in a

health. Your blood needs potassium to help with recovery after any form of exercise, and – you guessed it – there’s potassium in salt water. There are also traces of magnesium, which helps keep your nervous system running at its best, sodium to your immune system in check by regulating the balance of fluids in your body, and calcium for healthy teeth and bones.

Maintenance

Cleaning your salt water pool is only required once a year. Chlorine pools require constant surveillance whereas salt water pools stay clean with less work because of the constant flow of chlorine from the generator.

If you have a salt water pool you can expect to be on the low end of these estimates. You also will never have to add chemical chlorine pucks because a salt water system creates

Just a few laps will reduce any inflammation of your joints and muscles. Salt water also happens to contain the mineral bromide, which helps relieve muscle aches, pain and soreness caused by physical and emotional stress. Did you know that stress is the number one contributor to aging? That means lounging in the salt water pool can be considered an anti-aging therapy. Studies have shown that salt water helps promote the body’s natural self-healing processes. The more you swim, the better you will look and feel.

Swimming in salt water also increases circulation to the entire body, and if you swallow a little salt water it won’t kill you – it may actually help heal you from the inside out.

Salt water contains many minerals that are beneficial for your overall

chlorine by breaking down the salt water.

You will spend less money and time monitoring the chemistry of your pool and spend a lot more time enjoying all the benefits.

Reason for Change

Most pool industry experts agree on the relative ease and affordability of maintaining saltwater pools. Tradi-tional chlorine pools are quickly becoming a thing of the past and more hotels, water parks and clubs are being converted because of the health benefits and long term bene-fit costs.

Well the new season has started off – in fact as I write we are half way through it. This season we have had some changes in our sponsor-ship which have brought in Carls-berg (for a 3 year commitment) as our lead sponsor, for which the section is very grateful. In addition we have solicited the support of Sisma Autos who are dealers for Land Rover and Jaguar. This is a first for us both and hopefully the relationship will flourish. Our thanks go to both of these compa-nies for their generosity.

Turning now to rugby playing matters we have played 7 games having won 5, lost 1 and drawn 1. The draw was due to the fact that the game – against the Selangor police was a washout after about 7 mins and so both sides agreed to call it a draw!

A total of 100 players participated in the above tournament held at Data-ran on 26th March. There were 2 sections, Under-12 and Under-16. After 7 rounds of play which stretched from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, the following players occupied the top positions.

Wong Kah Hing bulldozed the Under-16 field scoring the maxi-mum of 7 points, leaving his competitors trailing far behind. The U-12 Category was hotly contested with 5 players scoring 5.5 points. Siddharth emerged top on tie-break. Prizes extended right up to the 10th place in each category so most players had something to fight for right up to the last round of play. Special mention goes to Wong Zi Yue, aged 12, who played in the Under-16 event rather than the U-12 and came out a strong third. He possibly would have won the U-12 category but opted to gain experi-ence against older players. Here comes a rising star. Special mention also goes to Mira Kaur, daughter of RSC member Dr. Ajeet, who won the top U-14 girls medal. Mira started in the RSC Chess Beginners classes many years ago, and it is

gratifying to see her progress over the years.

Altogether prizes worth close to RM 4000 in trophies, cash, chess vouchers were given out and the prize winners were happy to go home, many of whom had their parents waiting outside the Card Room for the whole day.

A simple lunch of chicken rice was served to all players. Many thanks goes to the Sports Office and F & B department as everything was spot-on. Also a gratitude of thanks goes to Mr. Jax Tham, the RSC Chess Coach, for the smooth running of the event.

What an eventful night! The Club’s Staff Annual Dinner has always been a ‘must attend’ event and this was more so evident with over 150 staff in attendance. The Staff Annual Dinner is organised as an appreciation to the staff, once a year, and acts not just as an evening of partying and having fun but also

as a team building exercise. Depart-ments, designations and organisa-tional culture go out the door to be replaced by networking with colleagues, letting your hair down and dancing with your bosses.

A colourful carnival like atmos-phere pervaded the air as our staff came in their best dressed ‘Oscar Night’ outfits as the party for this year was themed. Glitzy gowns by the ladies and even glitzier suits by the men walked the red carpet to the brightly decorated and lit up Grand Ballroom at the RSC Dataran. As one staff commented” I don’t recog-nise some of these people!”

The General Manager in his open-ing speech thanked all the staff for their excellent work, congratulated the award winners and commended the staff for their stalwart support especially during the trials and tribulations experienced in the early months of 2017.

The organising committee, comprising of staff worked hard to ensure a very successful fun filled evening of live music, shows, dance, lucky dip prizes, lucky draws and sumptuous buffet spread.

Several honours were presented to deserving staff including those who did not take any medical leave for the whole year. Three staff who have been with the Club for 25 years and six staff for more than 35 years were given Long Service Awards. At a time when staff turno-ver is high and the employment culture sees staff moving from job to job in an instant, 25 and 35 years of loyal service is indeed precious.

A big thank you goes to the mem-bers who contributed generously to this event. A big thank you also goes out to all our sponsors who contrib-uted prizes for the lucky draw. A special thank you must be mentioned to all our members at the RSC who contributed RM10.00 each for this event. A major highlight of this event was the turnout of the Interim Caretakers and a few other members, who took it upon themselves to serve the staff.

They manned the bar, and we must say in a most efficient manner, till the wee hours of the morning and only left when the music and dance finally ended.

The Best Employees for the Year, chosen on a Department basis by the staff themselves, saw three mem-bers of the staff being honoured with this award.

The Lucky Draw was one of the highlights of the event and the much anticipated 1st Prize of a motorbike, contributed by a member of the Club, was won by one of our F&B staff who, it turned out, was the first prize winner in the previous year!
