FILTRATION

Filtration consists of separating the suspended particles from the water, such as sand, oxides and debris from other materials carried by the pipes, which could cause obstruction and corrosion problems, causing damage to the passageways of the installation ducts or equipment.

The placement of water filters protects both the conduction of the water and the devices connected to it from the particles carried by the water, retaining and avoiding subsequent damages.

DIFFERENT FILTER MODELS

Replaceable cartridge filters, with varying degrees of filtration, can be manufactured in various materials, they must be replaced when the cartridge is saturated.

Manual and automatic self-cleaning filters. They includee a simple and efficient cleaning system, according to the model, the cleaning can be manual or completely automatic by time or pressure difference, not interrupting the water passage in the process.

FILTER EQUIPMENT COMPONENTS

CARTRIDGE CARRIER:Container housing of the filter element.

FILTER CARTRIDGE:

Filter cartridge of different typologies, depending on the material, shape, size and application (PP coiling wire, extruded expanded PP, washable PA or stainless mesh, etc.).


FILTRATION 21

The degree of filtration indicates the pore size, in microns (μm) 1000 μm = 1mm and corresponds to the minimum particle size retained. It must be installed in the appropriate cartridge case.

Active carbon cartridge widely used both at home and for specific applications. It is formed by a container that adds a load of active carbon through which circulates the water, used for the elimination of chlorine. Indicated to install right at the point of consumption and with a suitable cartridge carrier.

Polyphosphate cartridge. Prevents incrustation as well as pipe and installation metal parts corrosion. The polyphosphates have a branched linear structure that allows dragging of components that cause incrustation and corrosion avoiding the crystallization processes.

The polyphosphates do not modify the organoleptic properties of the water, it must be installed in a suitable cartridge carrier.

The objective of the filters ins tallation is to improve water quality, it becomes cleaner, clearer, crystalline and to protect domestic appliances and faucets from leaks and failures.

DOSAGE

In water treatment and purification systems, controlled addition of chemicals is required. This process is done by metering pumps and measuring and regulation panels in order to modify the water chemical composition and properties.

The most common products to be dosed for water for human consumption are oxidants, such as sodium hypochlorite or chlorine to ensure disinfection of water and to eliminate the presence of harmful microorganisms. Conditioning and pH regulators that make water suitable for daily use are also added or film-forming or protective products such as polyphosphate whose presence inhibits possible encrustation or corrosion in metallic water pipes.

TYPES OF DOSAGE

Constant flow rate dosage:Applications where the flow rate is uniform, the metering pump operates continuously and only allows adjustment of the percentage volume of the dosed flow.

Dosing proportional to the flow rate:Suitable for installations in which the flow to be treated is variable, dosing depending on the signal received from the pulse-emitting meter installed in the pipe through which the water to be treated circulates.

MEASUREMENT AND METERING OF DOSING SYSTEMS

In cases where a greater precision in the dosage is necessary or the previous methods are insufficient to precise measurement and regulation.

The dosing pump is monitored by means of an electronic control unit which performs a reading of the selected parameter and stops the dosing when a set point of the desired parameter is reached. In order to ensure correct operation, it is necessary to have a water accumulation with a recirculation of this water.


DOSAGE44

PH and ChlorineTo ensure a good chlorine disinfection operation, the pH value should be set between 6.8 and 7.2. It is recommended a combined dosing and regulation system for chlorine and pH.

By adjusting the pH to the indicated values the minimum contact time of the chlorine with the water for its correct disinfection is 30 to 40 minutes.

The recommended chlorine concentration in drinking water is between 0.3 and 0.6 ppm (mg / Lit) free chlorine.

DATA RECORDING AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS:

Through data transmission software it is possible to perform remote management in control panels allowing to record chlorine, pH and redox data.Different transmission systems allow the possibility of connecting all the parameters to a PC, manage them to send alarms, visualize the graphs registered every day, analyze the registered evolution and request rapid intervention if necessary.

CONTROL PARAMETERS

Free chlorine: corresponds to the active chlorine available after the disinfection is complete. This form of chlorine, which possesses the highest disinfecting and oxidizing power, corresponds essentially to the presence of hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite anion.

pH: measurement of the concentration of hydrogen ions or protons (H+) in a solution, expressed as the least decimal logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions expressed in gr / mol / L. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, the lower values indicate acidity and the higher alkalinity. The value from 7 to 7.5 indicates neutrality.

Potential REDOX (ORP): Potential required to transfer electrons from the oxidant to the reducing agent. In the process of oxidation, the electrons are transferred from the substance that will be oxidized to the oxidant. Simultaneously, when one substance is oxidized, another is reduced. Oxidants are electron donors, and the reducers are electron acceptors. Usually oxidants are caustic and reducers are acids. The measurement of the redox potential depends on Ph.

HARDNESS OF WATER

Precipitating rainwater absorbs and incorporates the gases with which it is found, including CO2. This solution slightly acidifies the water, enough so that when it encounters limestone rocks, it is able to dissolve them, on the one hand by dissolving the Calcium Ion and on the other the Carbonate Ion.

In the course of the waters there will give the reaction that will cause the finding of groundwater harder than the one on the surface.

Water, once saturated with carbon dioxide, can dissolve an amount of calcium carbonate equivalent to 0.000.9 of its mass.

When CO2 is released again from the water, the opposite reaction of the dissolution will take place, resulting in the creation again of the old calcite rock in the form of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3), commonly known as lime, which originated the water hardness.

This reaction will actually take place inside our facilities, pipes, boilers, accumulators, machinery in general.

TOTAL, TEMPORAL AND PERMANENT HARDNESS

Total hardnessIt is the total concentration of Calcium and Magnesium dissolved in the water. The total hardness will not give us the information about the fouling character of the water, because with this reading we do not know the present Bicarbonates, which are those that, when united with Calcium or Magnesium, can cause inlays.

LOCALIZATION

The presence of hardness in the water is very widespread in a high percentage of the national territory. More than 70% of water in Spain is too hard for efficient use in domestic and industrial needs. Soft or lime-free water is more suitable for the main functions in both industry and domestic use.


56 WATER SOFTENERS

Temporal HardnessIt is the amount of Calcium and Magnesium that is able to get associated with Bicarbonates and it will depend on the content of them present in the water. At most it will be equivalent to the total hardness. Therefore, it will be the amount of Calcium and Magnesium that can precipitate when the temperature increases or when the water is depressurized.

Permanent HardnessIt consists of salts that do not precipitate with increasing temperature or decompression (silicates, calcium and magnesium sulfates, chlorides and calcium and magnesium ions that have not yet become attached to bicarbonates).

In practice we will handle the total hardness data expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/l) or in parts per million (ppm).

WATER + CALCIUM + MAGNESIUM = HARD WATER

INCRUSTATIONS

This is a very serious problem that causes water hardness. The inlay can be formed by heating the water. This is because the calcium and magnesium bicarbonates break down and return to their carbonate form. Bicarbonates are soluble and, on the other hand, when they become carbonates they are no longer bicarbonates and precipitate. They form a layer inside tubes, accumulators, water heaters, boilers and accessories. This progressive increase of the incrustation generates a remarkable loss of efficiency in the calorific

performance, therefore a necessity of greater consumption of energy, as well as, a gradual deterioration of the equipment that undergoes this circumstance.

Recent university studies have determined up to a 30% difference of consumption between equipment that operate with soft water and others with hard water.

To reduce the hardness of water there are various methods such as distillation, reverse osmosis and ion exchange. The latter is the most used in installations where removal of hardness is the goal. In domestic, semi-industrial and industrial facilities it is an effective method detailed below.

CATIONS AND ANIONS

An ion is an atom or a group of atoms that has an electric charge. When this charge is positive it is called cation and on the contrary when it is negative it is called anion.

The resin used by the decalcifiers is a synthetic compound of styrene and divinylbenzene in sodium cycle that is manufactured in tiny particles in spherical form. These spheres have

a diameter of approximately half a millimeter. It is where the exchange of ions occurs.

Resin spheres attract positively charged ions or cations. The cations will be adhered to the resin until it comes in contact with other cations for which it has a greater affinity.

What happens is that the resin will release an ion and will accept instead the ion for which it has the most attraction. The ions are not destroyed or chemically changed: they are replaced by others in the resin spheres. One ion is extracted from the water and another is returned to the water. It is defined as ion exchange, and in this case is a cation exchange because the the salts involved are cations.

REGENERATION OF DESCALIFYING RESIN

Once the resin bed has absorbed a large amount of calcium and magnesium ions, it is already depleted or inefficient to continue exchanging ions.

It is now a matter of reversing the process and carrying out a process of displacing the calcium and magnesium ions, housed in the resin spheres, and replacing them with sodium ions. This process is called regeneration.

PhasesThe regeneration of the resin although it is a continuous process is divided in several phases that are differentiated in the following ones.

Inverse washing. Before starting the regeneration process itself, it is necessary to perform a washing contrary to the normal direction, called countercurrent or reverse washing. This is intended to eliminate outside

the column all foreign matter retained in the resin bed. This action seeks to make a sponge so that the resin bed is wrapped by salt water or brine.

Aspiration of the brine and slow washing. It is in this phase, when the brine or salt water comes into contact with the resin bed and the ion exchange takes place. The duration time of this phase is greater than the rest so that the resin bed absorbs the sodium ions.

Quick wash. Once this phase is finished, it is carried out in the same direction as the flow of the water in service, that is, from top to bottom: a water flow that performs two functions. On the one hand, place the resin bed evenly inside the bottle and secondly remove the remaining salt water that may have remained inside.

Tank filling. Once the above is finished, a supply of water to the salt reservoir is now made to dissolve salt in pellet to prepare salt water for the next regeneration.

REVERSE OSMOSISPRINCIPLE OF THE OSMOSIS OPERATION

Let's imagine a vessel divided in two by a semipermeable membrane. On each side we place the same amount of aqueous solution of different concentration of mineral salts. On the left side we place the most concentrated solution.

Due to the special design of the semipermeable membrane, a fluid will be produced from the less concentrated to the more concentrated side. This is due to the so-called "osmotic pressure".

The osmotic pressure is equal to and opposite to the hydrostatic pressure, so the level on the more concentrated side will be forced to rise, as shown in Figure 1.

If we exert a certain pressure on the more concentrated side, we can reverse the flow of water to the less concentrated side. This is reverse osmosis (figure 1).

T.D.S

Water contains many salts in solution. The Total Dissolved Salts (or TDS) is the amount, by weight, of dissolved substances in a given volume of water.

A compound dissolved in water, although not visible, forms part of the TDS, or total dissolved salts.

Reverse osmosis contributes to the reduction of TDS, since many salts dissolved in water such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, etc. can not easily pass through the membrane as pure the water does.

As can be seen in the table, the level of reduction of total dissolved salts in a water sample is around 90%, taking into account the temperature, pressure, dissolved salt content and water quality.

CONSIDERATIONS

Reverse osmosis equipment needs bacteriologically drinkable water for its proper functioning, remember that these equipment improves the quality of the water supply but does not make it drinkable.

It will also be necessary, on the one hand to replace the cartridges on a regular basis, a year approximately between refills, depending on the quality of the water (turbidity, chlorine excess, etc.) and it is advisable also to carry out a sanitization of the equipment when mounting it and later each time the cartridges are replaced to guarantee a perfect hygiene of the system. Sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, etc. can be used for proper cleaning.

FLOW RATE SCHEME

These equipments have several stages of filtration to eliminate the particles in suspension with pre-filter cartridge and elimination of chlorine with cartridge of active carbon. The water then passes through the membrane and the osmotized water will pass to the accumulation tank. There is a final stage, which is when the water before reaching the dispensing tap goes through the post-filter, which has the function of eliminating any bad taste that would have been generated in the water in contact with the tank.

MEASURING DEVICES Evolved testers allow easy measurement of different parameters of water control and analysis such as pH, CE Electrical conductivity TDS Total Dissolved Salts, temperature and free chlorine.

PH

The pH is a value that indicates the acidity or alkalinity of the water. It is the inverse of the logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions in the water and ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being pH neutral, 0 to 6 acid and 8 to 14 alkaline. The pH of natural waters ranges from 6 to 8 normally and it is related to the concentration and balance of carbon dioxide, bicarbonates and carbonates.

The parametric value for drinking water is between 6.5 and 9.5 and it is important to know its value since it influences in the aggressiveness or embeddability of the salts in the facilities, the capacity of the chlorinated disinfectants, etc.

CE CONDUCTIVITY

Water is more or less conductive of electricity depending on the salts contained in the solution, increasing with its concentration and temperature. Therefore it is a fairly used value, together with the TDS (given in ppm or mg/l) for the measurement of the total salts in dissolution of water.

The conductivity is expressed in mSiemens/cm and its inverse, the resistivity, in ohm x cm or megaohm x cm. As an approximation, we can take that, conductivity multiplying by 0.65, would give us the TDS at 25 °C. As an indicator parameter in drinking water, a maximum of 2500 mS/cm at 20 °C is recommended. WHAT IS TDS?

The Concentration of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the water corresponds to all the solid material that is dissolved therein; Mineral salts, added chemicals, substances entrained by water throughout its course.

The TDS level is measured through the conductivity / TDS probe. The value of the conductivity is multiplied by a factor (usually 0.5).TDS (mg/l) = Conductivity (mS / cm) x Factor (usually 0.5)

CHLORINE (CL2) AND THE NEED FOR MEASUREMENT

Chlorinated products are the substances most frequently used in the chemical treatment of water. All chlorinated products used in the treatment produce hypochlorous acid (HCLO) when reacted with water. The amount of hypochlorous acid is highly conditioned by the pH value.

In waters with a high pH, most of this acid (active chlorine) turns to hypochlorite ion (CIO), a form of chlorine with very low disinfecting power.

These two forms of chlorine are found in equilibrium water, although this depends on pH values.

Free chlorine: This form of chlorine, which possesses the highest disinfecting and oxidizing power, corresponds essentially to the presence of hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite anion.

Combined Chlorine: It has a very low disinfecting power and its presence causes irritations and bad odors. The combination of free chlorine with ammonia and the nitrogenous organic matter contained in the water produces the combined chlorine (chloramines).

Total chlorine: The sum of free chlorine and combined chlorine results in total chlorine.

Why to measure chlorine?Permanent water disinfection is necessary and has two purposes:

Hygienic: Destroy viruses, bacteria, parasites, etc. And eliminate the risks of contamination.

Of security: It prevents algae growth and keeps it clean. Water without disinfectant, although not used, is soon deteriorates due to the proliferation of algae and bacteria.

The recommended chlorine concentration in drinking water is between 0.3 and 0.6 ppm (mg / Lit) free chlorine.
