Worldwide, January 2013 had 115 5.0+ magnitude earthquakes, and of those, eight registered at 6.0+ in magnitude and one at 7.0+.
The January 2013 EQPD rate of 3.70 is the lowest rate, since the same rate was recorded for May of 2012. It is also the lowest monthly January rate since January 2008 (3.67).
January 13th and the 20th were the most active days of the month with seven 5.0+ earthquakes, ranging between 5.0-5.5 in magnitude on each of those days.
The strongest earthquake of the month was a 7.5 magnitude that struck Southeastern Alaska on January 5th.

The seven of 3.0+ in magnitude were the most in any month since September 2012 had eight.
The most active days of the month were January 16th and the 18th. The quakes on the sixteenth ranged between 1.6-3.1 in magnitude and the quakes on the eighteenth ranged between 0.4-2.1 in magnitude.
The strongest earthquake of the month was a 4.1 magnitude that struck 3km (2 miles) WNW of Timpson, Texas on January 25th. That quake was the strongest for the region since a 4.3 magnitude struck near Whitesburg, Kentucky on November 10, 2012.
