We have since been advised that this is not the case and parents and students should not use the bus bay under any circumstances.

College Closed to StudentsThe College will be CLOSED to all students on the following dates:• Wednesday, 15 March - until 2.00pm for Interim Report Parents Night & Careers Expo• Wednesday, 29 March - Workplace Learning visits – staff offsite all day

Semester 1 ATAR Preparation Program for Year 11 & 12 studentsThe College, in partnership with Mastermind Australia, are offering outstanding revision/tuition sessions in a range of courses for both Year 11 and 12 ATAR students at a re-duced cost over four weeks, which will be held at the College. This exam preparation program is an extremely valuable and worthwhile opportunity for students to achieve at a higher level with confidence and pursue personal excellence in their studies. Parents of ATAR students will receive a letter and flyer in the mail next week and students will have received a flyer in Mentor on Thursday, 9 March.

Student Vehicle PolicyParents and guardians are reminded of the College’s Student Vehicle Policy which is available to view on the College website under ‘Our College’ - ‘College Policies’. Below are key points that the College would like your support in enforcing.• Students drive carefully around the College at the beginning and end of the College day. The roads are

all extremely busy with other vehicles and students and pedestrians, not only from our College but the neighbouring schools, all of which have very young students.

• Students do not take other students in their vehicle without the expressed knowledge of their parents. Accident statistics for young drivers suggest that having friends in the vehicle can act as a distraction which can cause accidents.

• Recess time and lunch-time are both short. We strongly advise students not to use their vehicles at these times.

PARENTS AS PARTNERSFrom the report titled “Parental engagement in learning and schooling: Lessons from research” conducted

by the Family-School and Community Partnerships Bureau 2012 (Aust)

I have selected some excerpts that support the belief that parents do play a critical role in their child’s academic success for you to read.

“There is no definitive age at which family contributions begin or cease to make critical contributions to student achievement. Rather, the way in which parents communicate to their child the importance of learning over time is critical to a child’s academic success (Hong and Ho 2005).” P36

“As young people develop their own distinctive identities, they tend to place more value on autonomy in their self-expression and decision-making (Kreider et.al 2007). Parental engagement during the high school years therefore needs to take account of adolescents’ desire for independence and their expanding cognitive abilities. Program evaluations have demonstrated that family engagement can have positive results for the educational success of young people when there is a match between their developmental needs, parents’ attitudes and practices, and schools’ expectations of family involvement (Kendall et al.2008; Duckworth et.al 2009; Clinton, Hattie andDixon 2007). Outside of the school, parents can contribute to their children’s educational outcomes by creating a rich learning environment (Jeynes 2005). Parents can discuss options for post-secondary education, stress the value of education in general, provide learning resources such as books and newspapers, and take their children to social events and places that contribute to learning (Hilly andTyson 2009). They can also help their children maintain positive attitudes towards their own abilities and support them through problems at school (Castambis, Fan andChen in Henderson andMapp 2002).” P46

“There is strong consensus, supported by a variety of evidence dating from over 40 years, that positive parental engagement can and does significantly influence student academic attainment. The specific positive impact appears to include higher grades and test scores, higher successful completion of classes, higher graduation rates, and a greater likelihood of commencing postsecondary education. In addition to these educational outcomes, there appears to also be a number of positive developmental outcomes including more regular school attendance, better social and emotional development, and improved pro-social behaviour. These impacts have the potential to be financially quantified, with evidence suggesting that positive parental engagement returns positive financial benefits to the nation.” P50
