SEGEMENT A - ACTRESS 1 STROBE LIGHT AND DESTRESSED BEHAVIOUR

THE BRIEF

For this narrative section of my music video, my actress Millie will be playing the character of a young destressed teenage girl. I want Millie’s style to reflect the typical indie genre look, including baggy oversized jumpers, flannel shirts, ripped jeans and generally casual clothing. I have chosen to present Millie like this in order to make her appearance familiar to the audience, making her relatable in order for the audience to feel a connection with the character. At the beginning of the video Millie’s hair and make-up will be styled perfectly by having both appear neat and professional. During the video Millie will appear increasingly more destressed causing her to smudge her make-up all over her face and destroy her styled hair. By doing this I aim to show Millie’s destructive thoughts (due to her ‘regret’) taking over and worsening, causing her to almost self-destruct. By messing up her hair and make-up Millie will also be subverting the stereotypes of how a young girl should be presented due to societies expectation provoked by how women are presented in the media, especially in magazines.

MAKE-UP

At the beginning of the video Millie will wear trendy but highly skilled make-up giving her a perfect complexion. The make-up look worn by current young women today involves black winged eyeliner, dark ‘smoky eye’ (style of eyeshadow), bright lipstick (usually red), thick eyebrows and a contoured face (use of foundation, bronzer and highlighter. By displaying this make-up look on my actress she will appear very ‘ordinary’ and ‘normal’ adding to the style and personality of the character. By having a heavy, dark make-up look it will make it easier to later destroy and smudge, making Millie’s face overall look as if she has been abused or is severely upset/angry. I feel the red lipstick will look very effective and dramatic when smeared across Millie’s face in addition to the black mascara and eyeliner, giving the impression Millie has been crying. The end result of the make-up at the end of the video will overall be a complete mess, reflecting Millie’s passionately depressed emotions and feelings of ruin and regret.

HAIR

Another way to express my characters inner emotions on the outside, making it obvious to the audience is through her hairstyle. Having Millie’s hair tightly and neatly curled at the beginning of the video, using a heated curling wand, gives the impression the character cares about her appearance and is calm. In order to show her inner thoughts I will destroy her hairstyle by using a brush to backcomb the hair giving her a dramatic amount of volume and frizz. Her hair will no longer be orderly, but of control making her seem almost crazy and full of stress. I will use hairspray in order to maintain the look created throughout the filming session. During preparation before filming begins I have been watching online tutorials on YouTube to gain inspiration and knowledge on how to create the ideal hairstyle.

COSTUME

The costume is not a vital part of the mise en scene of my actress, as the lighting will be very dark making the outfit hard to identify. However it is still important that the character looks apart of the indie genre in combination with her hair and make-up styles. After researching the typical ‘indie style’ and trends, I have gathered the most common items of clothing which are; flannel shirts, oversized jumpers, chunky boots, denim jackets, ripped jeans and band t-shirts. I aim to apply some of these items onto my model to reflect the genre and make her look fashionably trendy. The clothing items will be darkly coloured, i.e. grey, black or dark shades of colours to connote a sense of despair and anger which would be subverted if she wore a bright yellow top for example. She will wear the same outfit throughout this segment of the music video which will not be affected unlike the hair and make-up.
