Did Christ Attend The Prom?

This truly is a wonderful time of theyear. Among many exciting events

of the season, one of the most exciting,for many high school students is theprom. What is it about a prom thatcauses so much excitement? Websterdefines "prom" as "a formal dancegiven by a high school or college class."If dancing is not wrong then there isnothing wrong with the prom. Ifdancing is wrong, then the prom iswrong. Following, is a list of reasonswhy dancing is wrong. Please give careful and prayerful consideration to these:

1. It is forbidden in the New Testament (Gal. 5:19-21; lasciviousness).

2. It destroys one's influence for good(I Cor. 15:33; I Tim. 4:12).

3. It depends solely on the mingling ofthe sexes (I Cor. 6:13,18; 10:8; leadsto fornication).

4. It arouses desires that are immorally fulfilled (Matt. 5:28).

5. It is not to the(I Cor. 10:31).

Very few Christians will deny thefact that dancing is a sin. So the nextquestion is "Could I go to the promwithout sinning?" Invariably someonesays, "I won't dance, but I want to goanyway." Paul said, "toabstain from thevery appearance of eviV9 (I Thess. 5:22).Could one go into a bar without leavingthe impression that he is guilty of thesin of drinking? He may not drink, butbecause the primary purpose for a bar isso people can drink, the world believesthat to be his purpose. Since theprimary reason for a prom is to dance,even though one may not dance, theworld believes he is. Even ifyou do not,you place a temptation before yourselfand others to sin through lust. Thisfact you cannot deny!

Now, back to our original question,"Did Christ attend the prom?" TheBible clearly teaches that Christ did notsin (I Peter 2:22). Jesus was careful to

over the country aremaking their plansfor their annualspring proms. Parents will spend up tohundreds of dollarsthat their daughterscan be beautifullydressed and then-sons handsomely attiredFor an evening of SIN.

Once there was a time whenpreachers all over would raise theirvoices and point out the vice and sinfulness associated with dancing. Today,many had rather keep quiet and bepopular than to be right with the Lord.When a preacher does speak out againstdancing he is scorned and ridiculed,young people are supported and encouraged to attend the dances in spite ofwhat the Bible says.

Why do parents allow their sons anddaughters to attend the dances?

First, because we want to be likethe people around us. The primaryreason Israel wanted a king was that shemight be like the nations around her.Right or wrong, what difference does itmake? That is the same defiantattitude manifested by many parentsand young people alike. Did not Paulsay, "be not conformed to this world, butbe ye transformed by the renewing ofyour minds, that he may prove what isthat good, and acceptable, and perfectwill of God" (Rom. 12:1-2)? It takes alot of courage for our young people tosay, when asked to attend the dances,"No, as a Christian I do not dance." If

they are encouragedby their preacher totake a stand againstit and discouraged bytheir parents to takea stand, what willmost of our youngpeople do?

Second, toomany parents aremore concerned with

their sons and daughters being popularthan being right. They will never be"Mr. or Miss High School" if they arenot poplar. Many times mother ordaddy was not popular so they are pushing their children to be what they werenot. To attend the homecoming dance,the valentine dance and the spring promis the "in thing" with the "in crowd."Parents, which is more important toyou, popularity or righteousness? Iknow what most will say but what aremost allowing their children to do?

Third, parents are allowing theiryoung people to attend the dances andproms because they do not know whatthe Bible teaches on the subject. It issad when people have attended Biblestudy and worship for a number ofyears, some even taught classes, yetthey still do not know what the Bibleteaches on some subjects. What issadder still, some do not care what theBible teaches on certain subjects.

It is true that no passage can befound which reads, "thou shalt notdance." Because such cannot be found,many young people will attend thedances with their parents sanction. Justbecause there is no passage that reads,"thou shalt not dance" does not mean

the Bible does not condemn its practice.Consider the word "revellings" and"lasciviousness." According to theAmerican College Dictionary, revel-lings is, "an occasion of merrymaking ornoisy festival with dancing." In Lindelland Scott Greek Lexicon it suggests,"a jovial feast with music and dancing."Concerning the word "lasciviousness,"Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon ofthe New Testament, says, "filthywords, indecent bodily movements,unchaste handling of males andfemales."

Why is it that parents and youngpeople alike will accept the definitionsof some words but not the definitions ofother words, while the definitions arecoming from the same source? Supposewe were studying Philippians 1:27 wherePaul wrote, "only let your conversationbe as it becometh the gospel of Christ"To understand the passage we wouldhave to define the word "conversation."From proper investigation we wouldlearn the word means "our manner ofliving," not just the way we talk. Tothis there is no disagreement. If wewere studying Mark 16:16 where Jesussaid, "he that believeth and is baptizedshall be saved," we would want to learnabout the word "baptism." The samesources as above tell us it means to "dip,plunge or immerse." Again, we wouldhave no trouble with this definition.

Why then do some have trouble withproperly understanding the words"revellings" and "lasciviousness" whentheir meanings come from the samesource as "conversation" and "baptism"where we accept the definition? Thereal reason we will accept some and

reject the other is that some wordsagree with what we want to do whileother words condemn what we want to

do. We, therefore, disagree with thewords that condemn what we want to

do.

Parents and young people alike,listen, the Bible still says, "Abstain fromall appearance of evil" (I Thess. 5:22).No one is naive enough to say evil is notassociated with dances and proms. Justrecently in Memphis, Tennessee, adance had to be stopped, not hours afterit got underway, but only minutesbecause of drugs and drinking. Everyyear in the Memphis area there is whatis known as "Project Prom." That is, ifa student is to drunk at the prom, orparty following the prom, they can callthis number for a ride home. In thequiet city of Trenton last year a largeadvertisement appeared in the localpaper, signed by a good number ofstudents of the local high school,encouraging their fellow classmates tohave a "Safe and Sober Prom." If evil isnot associated with the dances andproms, why such an admonition, evenfrom fellow classmates?

It is a sad day when many schoolsare stopping their annual students banquets while keeping the spring prom.The banquet is something all studentscan participate in. The prom is forthose who know not the truth of God ordo not care what the truth of God

teaches. It appears some of our schoolsare no longer interested in providing forall the student body. The Bible stillsays, "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but ratherreprove them.." (Eph. 5:11). "Prove all

things, hold fast that which is good..."(I Thess. 5:21-22). Young people, whereare you going to stand? Parents, whereare you going to encourage your sons

IS DANCING WHONG?

Sincere, honest, dedicated Christianyoung people ask this question every

year. An ungodly world puts tremendouspressure on God's teenagers to joinwith them in worldly recreation. Whilenot wanting to sin, teenagers do want toenjoy these years. It is for this reasonthat sin needs to be defined and linesdrawn so that they can know what isright and what is wrong.

God wants the best for his children,young or old (James 1:17), and promisesthe "abundant life" to those who forsake the world and follow him (John10:10). He expects us to be happy (Phil.4:4) and does not restrict us from anygood wholesome entertainment. Heonly withholds the things from us whichwould hurt us, as any good parent doesfor his child.

God has taught that dancing issinful. It is condemned three times inGalatians 5:19-21 by the words, "lasciviousness," "revellings" and "suck like."Lasciviousness means "filthy words,indecent bodily movements, unchaste(not pure) handling of males and

females" and "conduct which exciteslust." He added, "Flee also youthfullusts..." (I Tim. 2:22), which cannot bedone while dancing.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

(1) IT CONDEMNS "REVELLINGS" (Gal. 5:21). This word means,"An occasion of merry making or noisyfestivity with dancing, masking, etc."This description aptly portrays the highschool dances and proms of our day.The very atmosphere of dancing is sinful and is not appropriate for someoneseeking to walk the "straight andnarrow way" (Matt. 7:13-14).

(2) "NEITHER GIVE PLACE TOTHE DEVIL" (Eph. 4:27). As childrenof God, our ancient and constant foe isthe devil. We must "be sober" (watchful) lest he devour us (I Peter 5:8). It ishard enough to avoid his pitfalls withoutpurposely placing ourselves in a place ofknown temptation! The Bible says,"Resist (NOT ASSIST!) the devil and he

will flee fromyou" (James 4:7). We can,and no doubt will, be tempted whenseeing others engaged in indecent andvulgar acts on the dance floor. Can wepray "leadus not into temptation" (Matt.6:13) and lead ourselves into it?

(3) "NEITHER BE PARTAKEROF OTHER MEN'S SINS" (I Tim.5:22). Lovers of God must "eschew(shim) evil" (I Peter 3:11). They do notwant to be a part of it! Could it be rightto help raise money or purchase ticketsto encourage teens to dance?! God'sWord still says, "And have nofellowshipwith the unfruitful works of darkness,butrather reprove them" (Eph. 5:11), and"...neither bid him God speed: forhe thatbiddeth him God speed ispartaker ofhisevil deeds" (II John 10-11). This isspecifically speaking of false teachersbut wouldapply to any not abiding in orpracticing the teaching of Christ.

Young people, search your hearts,search the Bible and "work out yourown salvation withfearand trembling"(Phil. 2:12). There is a heaven to gainand a hell to shim - ACT ACCORDINGLY!

As the Lord's people, we are to setour affection on things above not onthings on the earth (Col. 3:1-2). We areto practice pure and undefiled religionand to keep ourselves unspotted fromthe world (James 1:27). We are not tobe "conformed to this world: but be yetransformed by the renewing of yourmind, that ye may prove what is thatgood, and acceptable, andperfect, will ofGod" (Rom. 12:2). The command givenus is to not love "the world, neither thethings thatare in theworld. Ifany manlove the world, the love of the Father isnot in him. For all that is in the world,the lust of the flesh, and the lust of theeyes, and thepride of life, is not of theFather, but is ofthe world" (I John 2:15-16).

Is dancing of the world? Does ithelp us set our mind on things above?Does it inspire us to holier service inthe Lord's kingdom? Is it the practiceof keeping oneself unspotted from theworld? When the evidence and fruits ofdancing are examined, the answers tothese questions are obvious. Dancingstands condemned in the Bible.

Modesty is a Christian virtue, but tothe world it is a hiss and by-word.

Theword "modest" means, "1: placing amoderate estimate on one's abilities orworth...2: observing the proprieties ofdress and behavior: DECENT."

Our world is extremely uncomfortable with modesty in any form.Through the influence ofHollywood, TVand various other forms ofmedia we aresubmerged in the works of the flesh.You are a misfit in society unless youare tainted at least a little bit. To beacceptedby people in general today youmust be a little immodest, a littleimmoral,a little impious,a little irreverent, a little indecent, or a little illicit.The world will smile on "a little," andrarely frown on a lot.

The word "modest" is used but onetime in the Bible, and that is in I Tim.2:9, where Paul said, "In like manneralso, that women adorn themselves inmodest apparel, with shamefacednessand sobriety; not with broided hair, orgold, or pearls, or costly array." Thepassage dealswith female adornment, ordress. The context suggests that thetendency of some women then was tooverdress (cf. I Peter 3:5). There is stillthe likelihood in our day that some willoverdress for the sake of calling undueattention to themselves. Such isimmodest. However, the greater likelihood today is the opposite — under-

dress. Women will underdress (wearbrief, short, revealing items) for anynumber of reasons, either to be noticed,admired, or even desired by men, or thevain need of showing off their body tothe best advantage (whatever that mightbe).

Christian ladies mustbe sensitive tothe need for modesty in the way theydress. There are many reasonswhy thisis so, but here I will mention one: forthe sake of the difference between menand women, and God's will respectingsuch. Paul addressed the importance ofmodest dress to women! Jesusaddressed the sin of lust to men (Matt.5:28)! Do we need to wonder why?Women should also be sensitive to thisfor the sake of their own physical protection. This is a sex saturated societywe live in, and sexual crimes and harassment are one of the most serious andcommon problems of our day. Theaggressor is viewed as always being inthe wrong in such cases, and the truthis the aggressor is wrong and God willjudge such (Heb. 12:4). But, can we saythat a woman is guiltless who cares notabout the effect of her manner of dress,if it is immodest? Certainly the womanmust share in the responsibility. Somemen are crude, vile and corrupt nomatter how modestly the womanpresents herself, but that does notremove the God-given responsibility ofmodesty from her.

In 1984-1985, a questionnaireregarding swim-wear was sent by theHollywoodSocialStudies organizationtoa sampling of U.S. psychiatrists toascertain whether there are risks insexual display of fashionable swim-wear

of today. Of those who replied, 87%said a parent would be "realistic" to beaware that a swimsuit with high-cut legsmight make a daughter a target forsexual advances or crimes; 84% said aparent would be naive to think that adaughter could wear a string bikini andnot appear to boys to invite sexualattention; 81% said the same is true offemales who wear bikinis or short skirts;91% said that husbands and fathershave some responsibility for sensibleguidance to enable females to avoidclothing that might be dangerouslyprovocative to some males, and most ofthe psychiatrists polled said that somemothers who dress their little girls in

unnecessarily revealing swim-suits maybe expressing their own exhibitionismindirectly, and that if the fact is broughtto their attention, 96% said that a likelyresponse would be self-righteous indignation, accusing anyone of vile motiveswho would dare think such a thing. So,do you still think that warnings aboutimmodesty is only so much preachertalk?

influence people for good. We should donothing that Jesus would not do. Hesaid He would be with us only if wewould remain faithful to Him. Youanswer the question, "Did Christ attendthe prom?" Young people, are you withJesus? Think about it. Nothing is moreimportant in all the world than yoursoul's salvation, not even the "once in alifetime prom" (Matt. 16:26).

A former owner of one of Chicago'slargest dance halls: "We know thenatural desires ofyouth. We know thatsex is the strongest impulse planted inthe human race.... You can picture theeffect on a boy or girl when this hungeris keenest..at one of these dances whichcalls for close abdominal contact andfrequently brings the cheeks togetherand entwines the limbs.... There is...butone reason for its popularity. Thatreason is sex appeal. I hasten to assureyou that I do not believe that dancersalways are conscious this is the reasonthey enjoy this position and the stepsthat go with it. But this lack of consciousness is merely an added factor ofdanger."

Homes for orphan childrenreport that in a few months after theschool proms they have many moreunwed mothers and extra babies to carefor!

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES

1. "Abstain from all appearance ofevil" (II Thess. 5:22).

Does dancing have the appearanceof evil? Does dancing promote puregodly thoughts within the individual?We are to "flee youthful lusts" (II Tim.2:22) and "abstain from fleshly lusts,which war against the soul" (I Peter2:11). Romans 1:24 tells us of somewhom God gave up to "uncleannessthrough the lusts of their own hearts, todishonour their own bodies betweenthemselves."

2. We are to keep ourselves"unspotted from the world" (James1:27).

The smallest boat can sail aroundthe world as long as the water stays onthe outside, but when the water getsinside, even the largest ship will sink!Dancing promotes friendship with theworld. "Ye adulterers and adulteresses,know ye not that the friendship of theworld is enmity with God? whosoevertherefore will be a friend of the world isthe enemy of God" (James 4:4).

3. Dancing Is bad fruit from a badtree (Matt. 7:17-20).

Good fruit cannot come from a

corrupt tree. Neither can bad fruitcome from a good tree. Dancing hasnever produced more love for God, moredevotion for the church, more respectfor the opposite sex, more Bible reading,more prayer, more interest in heaven.Dancing has NEVER led to ANY goodthing! Instead, it causes people to looseinterest in the church, Bible study,holiness, teaching the lost, heaven.

DANCING IS LASCIVIOUS

Lasciviousness is the Bible wordwhich most adequately describesdancing. It comes from a Greek wordthat is used nine times in the GreekNew Testament. It is translated "lasciviousness" six times (Mark 7:22; II Cor.12:21; Gal. 5:19; Eph. 4:19; I Peter 4:3;Jude 4), "wantonness" two times (Rom.13:13; II Peter 2:18), and "filthy" onetime (II Peter 2:7).

W. E. Vine gives as the definition ofthe word: "absence of restraint, indecency, theprominent idea is shamelessconduct" Thayer says: "Unbridled lust,indecent bodily movements, unchastehandling of males and females." A. T.Robertson says: "unrestrained sexualconduct." The word means: "sensuality,inclination to sensuality (a fondness foror indulgence in sensual pleasures),conduct which excites lustful desires." Ifdancing is not described in this, thenthere is no heaven!

Galatians 5:19, 21 says, "Now theworks of the flesh are manifest, which

are these;Adultery, fornication, unclean-ness, lasciviousness. .They which dosuch things shall not Inherit the kingdom of God" (v.21). Dancing is a "workof the flesh." It is worldly, hedonistic,evil and satanic.

BIBLE EXAMPLES SHOW THEFRUITS OF DANCING

In Exodus 32, the children of Israelwere waiting for Moses at the foot ofMt. Sinai. God said they had corruptedthemselves with the golden calf and bydancing. "...And the people sat down toeat and to drink, and rose up to play.And the Lord said unto Moses, go, getthee down; for thy people, which thoubroughtest out of the land ofEgypt, havecorrupted themselves" (vs.6-7). "And itcame to pass, as soon as he came nighunto the camp, that he saw the calf, andthe dancing" (v.19). Part of their playing was their dancing! Their's was asensual, lustful playing with each other!

In Daniel 5 we read of the city ofBabylon being taken by Cyrus thePersian and his armies. Verse one says"Belshazzarthe king made a great feastto a thousand of his lords, and drankwine before the thousand." Secularhistory records theywere entertained bya thousand slave girls dancing on thetables before them (the pagans alwaysentertained themselves by having beautiful seductive women dance to music soas to excite lustful emotions anddesires). While in their sensual lustfulindulgence, Cyrus marched his armydown the dry river bed under the greatwall of Babylon and took the city!

In Matthew 14:1-12 and Mark 6:17-

29 we read of the execution of John theBaptist. It was dancing that led to thishideous crime. On Herod's birthday, hisstep-daughter Salome, the daughter ofHerodias, danced before him so as toexcite lustful emotions and desireswithin him. He promised her whatsoever she asked up to the half of hiskingdom. Being instructed of hermother, she asked for John's head.What caused Herod to make such acareless vow? What emotions did shestir in him?

CONCLUSION

There is no way in the world thatdancing can be justified from the scriptures. It is bad fruit, lascivious, damnable! We are taught of God to "denyungodliness and worldly lusts" and to"live soberly, righteously, and godly, inthis present world" (Titus 2:12).

All who engage in it have SINNED.Concerning sin, the Bible says, "repentor perish" (Luke 13:3).

"Dancing consists in therhythmicalmovement ofany or all parts of the bodyin accordance with some scheme of individual or concerted action which isexpressive of emotions or ideas." It isthe "rhythmic movement having as itsaim the creation of visual designs."Dancing produces lustful desires withinpeople that are sinful (Matt. 5:28).

The people of God have been"called out" of the world unto a holylife. We are God's own possession(I Peter 2:9). We no longer talk, act,dress, or go to the places we once did.The old way of life is sinful and separates one from God. In Ephesians 2:1-7,we read: "And you hath he quickened,who were dead In trespasses and sins;Wherein in time past ye walked accord-Ing to the course ofthis world, accord-tng to the prince of the power of theair, the spirit that now worketh in thechildren of disobedience: Among whomalso we all had our conversation intimes past in the lusts of our flesh,fulfilling the desires of the flesh and ofthe mind; and were by nature thechildren of wrath, even as others. ButGod, who is rich in mercy, for his greatlove wherewith he loved us, Even whenwe were dead in sins, hath quickened ustogether with Christ, (by grace ye aresaved;) And hath raised us up together,and made us sit together in heavenly

The theme of this issue is DANCING and theSpring Proms. Preachers and elders everywhere must warn and exhort young people tonot be taken in by this great evil. Parentsmust take the lead in showing the kind ofliving God requires. Parents, why not plan awholesome activity for Christian youngpeople to attend instead of the prom? Youwill be glad you did and help souls be sparedfrom much anguish. Young people, don'ttrade your soul for a supposed evening of fun.It's worth more than the world (Matt. 16:26).
