What do the words prosecco, Italian ice, and Venice beach grass have in common? Other than theirItalian-made themes, these are the song titles of Chicago based prog-jazz band Herculaneum (also the nameof an ancient Italian city lost to the same volcanic eruption that consumed Pompeii). The term “prog-jazz,” aterm this newly heralded six-piece uses to describe their own music, might seem a little intimidating at first butwhen you take into account their fantastically blithe song titles (like “Twin Unicorns”) and their bohemiangrad-school-dude looks, their serious improvisational jazz sound takes on a more accessible feel. The group, led by Icy Demons drummer Dylan Ryan, takes up-tempo, horn blaring queues from classics like Miles Davis’“Spanish Key” on tracks like the aforementioned “Twin Unicorns” and props them up next to mysterious andlilting, Tortoise-esque jams like “Golden Monarch.” The result is an atmospheric combination of spectacularrhythmic highs and dark, caustic lows that strike a balance between fluid improvisation and just the rightamount of discordant intensity. Accompanying the rhythm section of Ryan and upright bassist Greg Danek is ateam of horn players, led by trumpeter Nick Broste, who paint colorful melodies over their mellow afro-beatgrooves. Herculaneum will play a special live show this Friday (Jan 6) at Hallwalls Contemporary ArtsCenter with Buffalo’s Bear Flames as part of the center’s Winter 2012 concert series. —cory perla

9th Annual Syd BarrettBirthday Tribute Concert

Most people probably know Syd Barrett primarily asthe guy who Wish You Were Here was about. A fewslightly more educated fans might remember that hewas Pink Floyd’s original lead singer, and was thedriving creative force behind their debut album, ThePiper At the Gates Of Dawn. Those who are trulyfamiliar with Barrett’s work, however, know that theman is nothing short of a music legend. Afterleaving Pink Floyd, he released two little-heard butmuch-loved solo albums, The Madcap Laughs, andBarrett, both of which were released in 1970. Afterthat, Barrett’s rapidly deteriorating mental condition

One World TribeWhile many artists dwell on negativity and despair,One World Tribe focuses on turning frustrationinto a positive force for societal change. The upbeatand optimistic band enthusiastically spreads anidealistic message of hope, renewal, andreconciliation. With songs like “No Justice, NoPeace” and “We Are One,” One World Tribe infusesits jazzy, world beat jams with a fierce social justicecomponent. Like Sly and the Family Stone, thefunky group builds its work around a celebration ofdiversity and cooperation that it itself demonstrates.Led by Kennedy Thompson, the Pennsylvania-basedcollective of artists formed in 1994, joining together

did him in and he was essentially a complete reclusefor the rest of his life, before finally passing away in2006. In spite of his small recorded output, Barrett’slegacy has only grown throughout the years, as he isrevered as a cult hero. Now, exactly 42 years afterThe Madcap Laughs some of Buffalo’s mostprominent musicians are gathering to pay tribute tothe mad genius. This Friday (Jan 6), MohawkPlace will host the 9th Annual Syd BarrettBirthday Tribute Concert, which will feature suchlocal artists as Odiorne, the Vegetable Men, theProjected Sound, and more. The show will be atribute to Syd’s eccentric, wildly original approachto songwriting. Considering how offbeat Barrett’scompositions often were, it will be interesting to seehow these local acts approach his work. Ending thispiece with a variation on the phrase “shine on youcrazy diamond” would be a bit clichéd, but suffice itto say, this should be an amazing show, payingtribute to a music legend whose legacy grows witheach passing year. —john hugar

The Tins, The Found, & CosmicShakedown

established acts that inhabit our bars, clubs andvenues on a nightly basis. This Friday (Jan 6)Buffalo’s enduring bastion of local music,Nietzsche’s, presents a lineup featuring three ofBuffalo’s most promising local bands in action.Kicking off the show is Cosmic Shakedown, andwith a name that recalls some kind of far-out,stratospheric jam-session, this foursome has beenmaking a name for themselves here on earthfollowing the release of their self-titled EP. We alllove a good underdog story, and the Tins are a trioof hardworking mates that everyone can root for, having recently surpassed their goal of raising$8,000 on Kickstarter for the release of their firstfull-length album. Given the attention that theirself-titled EP gained in 2010, it wouldn’t be asurprise if their new album, set to come out inMarch, propelled them into new territory as a bandthat knows how to churn out accessible, insanelycatchy rock tunes. If you’re lucky enough to havefound the Found, then you’ve discovered a bandthat was made to be witnessed in the live-setting.The Found’s classic rock sensibilities give way toobvious comparisons to bands like the Stones andDeep Purple, but there’s still so many other layersthat continually reveal themselves whenever theseguys perform. In addition to having an absolutelydemonic drummer, the band’s equally as sinisterguitar, bass, keys, and organ cement this quintet’sstatus as one of Buffalo’s must-see local rock acts.—jon wheelock

him with a series of benefit shows, which willcontinue when Glorious Times and Club Infinitypresent a 2-day benefit concert, which will featurethe reunions of a couple of classic Buffalo metalacts. On Saturday (Jan 7) 1980s metal bandBeyond Death, which includes founding membersof Cannibal Corpse and Goldfinger, will reunite forthe first time since 1988, along with legendarythrash metal band Tirant Sin, who will also bereuniting for the first time since the late 1980s.Other acts include Avulsion, Demented DreamStates, Abdicate, and Seplophile. Sunday (Jan 8)will feature Long Island death metal bandSuffocation, Cleveland’s Embalmer, and localbands Seplophile and Cain. Tony is a talented metalguitarist who has played in local bands like Sons ofAzrael and Ritual Quarantine—significant groups inBuffalo’s metal and hardcore scenes—so it onlymakes sense that a few hardcore legends wouldcome together for this once in a lifetime benefitshow at Club Infinity. Pure Ink Poetry SlamThis Wednesday (Jan 11) is the grand opening ofthe Pure Ink Poetry Slam at Merge Restaurant. This monthly event will contribute to the backboneof our local literary community, which alreadyboasts a few regular open mic reading nights, poetpresentations, and writer’s groups. The organizers ofPure Ink plan to feature local poets alongside poetsfrom Niagara and Canada. After years of travelingto Burlington, Ontario, and Toronto for poetryslams, Brandon Williamson, a Buffalo native andpoet, created this event with the literary communityin mind. “I simply want to bring this poetry scene, which has essentially been an undergroundphenomenon, to the surface so that we can showcasewhat the poetic community of Buffalo has to offer,”said Williamson. Unlike an open mic, a poetry slamis a competition. Poets will present their bestofferings to be judged by audience members, whowill be welcomed to participate. Gracing the stagewill be poets Ntare Ali Gault, Ten-Thousand,David Hulett, Tomy Bewick, and more. Poeticstyles will range from reading, lyrical, slam style, free style, rap, and more. Williamson explained,“Poetry slams are making waves throughout thenation and as the art form grows, expression growsalong with it.” Sign up begins at 8pm and the slamstarts at 8:30pm. —jill greenberg

Langhorne SlimFolk singer-songwriter Langhorne Slim might havea name that sounds like it is straight out of LooneyTunes, but he is anything but looney. In fact, he’sextremely down to earth. “Though we have sinnedall of our lives, we ain’t going to hell. Well, we’regoing to the rebel side of heaven,” the 31 year-oldsings on “Rebel Side of Heaven,” the opening trackof his latest album, 2009’s Be Set Free. The lyricseems to express the feeling that though you mighthave vices, being a good person to the peoplearound you is what really matters. This is the type ofsubject matter Langhorne Slim, real name SeanScolnick, has focused on throughout his career, beginning with his 1999 album Slim Pickens andcontinuing through six more full length albums. After taking his stage name from the town he grewup in, Langhorne, Pennsylvania, a town of 1,600people, he left to tour the country with only hisguitar and backing band to share the stage with thelikes of the Avett Brothers, Cake, and Murder ByDeath. Langhorne Slim will appear live atBabeville’s Ninth Ward this Wednesday (Jan 11).—cory perla
