Ibstock Utd Junior Football Club U9’s Puma’stribute to LCFC’s helicopter crash victimsLast month, thousands of people took part in a march through Leicester to remember those who tragically died in a helicopter crash outside the King Power Stadium in October.

Leicester City chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was killed, along with two members of staff, Kaveporn Punpare and Nusara Suknamai and the pilot, Eric Swaffer and his partner Izabela Roza Lechowicz in the crash after the match against West Ham, on October 27th.

The walk started from Jubilee Square and proceeded to the football ground ahead of Leicester’s match against Burnley. This was their first home game since the crash.

William Sparrow, from Hugglescote, took part in the walk, with his Dad, Pete, an assistant coach for Ibstock JFC U9 Pumas.

William, who plays for the under 9’s Ibstock junior football team said, “The walk was happy and sad at the same time, but I am glad that I was able to be there, to celebrate the memory of the Chairman Vichai. I felt very proud to put the scarf (signed by the Ibstock under 9’s) and the foxes heads (made by Sam Loonam, one of Will’s team mates and his mum, Donna Loonam) in the memorial area on behalf of my team mates. Inside the stadium, the 2 minutes silence for Remembrance Day and the helicopter crash victims was emotional.”

Ibstock Utd JFC Under 9 Pumas would like to thank their sponsors for all their support. It is very much appreciated by all involved with the team.

Sponsors: The George & Dragon, Thringstone, Watling JCB, Ibstock Brick, The Valetman, Stanton Trading Ltd, Jim Davda.

Local schools excel in raising money for Children in Need....

Workers at the logistic giant’s head office in Ellistown, Leicestershire, donated 30 bags full of items, including clothing, shoes, DVDs, books and more.

Every item donated will be used to replenish stock in Age UK shops across the region.

With the average Big Bag donation being worth £20, the team has collectively raised £600 to support the charity’s services, which provide older people with advice and support, from tackling loneliness to helping to improve later life health care.

Pall-Ex’s Marketing Manager, Abby Langley, knows the importance of engaging with local charities, she says: “At Pall-Ex, we understand the importance of our local charities, and we try to support as many as we can.

“Staff were asked to rummage through their cupboards, lofts and spare rooms at home and fill the giant Age UK bags with unwanted items.

“It was a great incentive to clear out all our unwanted items knowing they would be put to good use and the funds raised would feed back into the local community.”

Nikky Miles, of Age UK Leicester, Shire & Rutland, says: “We are affiliated to Age UK, however, we are not a branch of a national charity but an independent, local, registered charity. The distinction comes in the local focus of what we do - we raise funds locally, we campaign locally and we support local older people.

“I have to say a huge thanks to Pall-Ex for helping with Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland’s Big Bag Challenge campaign. With Pall-Ex’s help we are aiming to collect an additional 500 charity bags from across the county. This kind of support really does make a difference because every penny raised locally is spent locally.”

Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is a local charity that promotes the well-being of older people by helping to make later life fulfilling and enjoyable. It is committed to maintaining the dignity, privacy and independence of older people by providing a range of relevant services which meet the needs and wishes of local people.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is the core of HMRC’s plan to become one of the most digitally advanced tax administration in the world. Paper accounting will be completely superseded as this legislation comes in to force in the following stages;• April 2019 Businesses and individuals who are VAT registered will be

required to set up a digital tax account and file returns online for VAT purposes.

• April 2020 Businesses with turnover less than £85,000 (all those who are self-employed) will be required to report income and expenses.

• After April 2020 MTD will become compulsory for anyone who files a tax return, including limited companies.

In preparation for these changes businesses will need to start managing their accounts and finances on-line and move records to cloud-based technology. Over the past 5 years, Sence have been working with a number of cloud-based solutions. We are taking a proactive approach to provide comprehensive information and guidance, ensuring that our clients are fully aware of, and prepared for, the coming changes. If you need to take action and don’t know where to start, give us a call on 01530 267320 to arrange a coffee and a chat.

Continuing our series of new topical short stories featuring that mischievous rail dog, Ruffle, called ‘Ruffle’s Walks’...

Within each story Ruffle will send a secret word to his readers in the form of underlined, italic capital letters scattered in the text. Once you have found the letters, rearrange them to form a word that is relevant to that month’s story. At the bottom of each story it will tell you how many letters you are looking for. The actual word answer will be shown on page 31. Woof - have fun!

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Samantha and Ben were sitting in the carriage of the green train as it stood at the station of the little heritage railway. There were no trains running that day as during the winter the Timetable was reduced and fewer trains ran. Ruffle was sitting on the seat alongside Ben. He was bored as there was no sign of bacon or biscuits! He yawned.

‘It’s no use yawning Ruffle! We’ve got to think of an idea for decorations for this year’s Christmas Tree Festival In the village. There’s no food until we’ve decided what we’re going to do. And that goes for you Ben! Come on – think!’

Ben reached into the box of silver baubles left over from the previous year. Ruffle sat up and watched as Ben held it up by a piece of thread and started to spin it round. They both seemed mesmerised by the sparkling reflections As the winter sun caught the bauble.

‘Stop!’ shouted Samantha, almost making Ben drop the baublE. ‘Do that again, slowly this time.’

Ben made the bauble spin slowly round, looking first at the bauble then at Samantha’s face that was changing into a Large grin.

‘That’s it! When you started to spin the bauble round it caught Ruffle’s reflection in it and projected an image of Ruffle onto the bauble! That’s what we’ll do – everyone who travels on the train between now and the Christmas Tree Festival can decorate a bauble with a Ruffle theme: a small picture of an Airedale, or just a head or even paw prints. Then we can hang them

on our ‘railway’ tree at the Festival, but the baubles will have been decorated by all of our passengers who have enjoyed travelling on the train!’

And that’s what they did! All the passengers who travelled on the little railway for the next couple of weeks until the eve of the Tree Festival enjoyed decorating a Selection of baubles with Ruffle-themed decorations. Ruffle even helped, though he seemed to get more glitter on his nose than on the baubles!

The day of the Tree Festival arrived and Eric took Ruffle along with Samantha and Ben to the Village hall to see the finished tree. To their surprise and delight the Railway Tree with the Ruffle baubles had won first prize!

Merry Christmas everyone!Woof! From Ruffle.

Merry Christmas! On behalf of the Parish Council, may I take this opportunity of thanking Parishioners for their support during 2018, and wish you all a happy and healthy Festive Period.

As 2018 draws to a close, The Council are already looking forward to next year as we are asked to set our Precept Budget for 2019 and highlight the Projects that we would like to bring to the Community. Due to the economic climate effecting us all, Councillors unanimously agreed that we would not increase our precept for 2019, therefore the Parish Council element of your council tax, will remain the same. The projects that we are looking at:

The refurbishment of the Old Skate Park site on Melbourne Road into an Educational space for Youngsters, The Cenotaph (War Memorial), the Refurbishment of the Old Chapel at the Cemetery, to make this usable once again for services etc, CCTV for the Welfare site, extending our Christmas lights display, and following a public consultation early in 2019 to provide a usable facility at the Welfare in line with people’s views. We will also aim to paint the play areas, replace damaged equipment where necessary, paint the public toilets on High street, add to our village notice

boards throughout the village, and continue with the other village services that we currently pay for/look after ie allotments, cemetery, hanging baskets, open spaces, litter bins,

We are always keen to hear of any other ideas that we can explore, no matter how large or small, even probable solutions to problems that we encounter around the Parish.

As I have highlighted in previous notes, the role of a Parish Councillor is neither easy or dull, it is a Challenge that sometimes becomes a little frustrating but ultimately, we are here to represent the community and we do strive to deliver a service that both promotes the village and benefits the people within it.

Controversy will always rear its head, and over the past 12 months we have had our fair share of that, however I believe that we have attempted to resolve many of these issues by meeting with the People affected. Ongoing discussions are still being had with various bodies regarding Development, Traffic and Parking Issues, which I am sure have affected most of us at some time or other.

Until 2019 have a great Festive Season!

CHRISTMAS PAST IN IBSTOCKAs someone abnormally addicted to history, I often wonder and research all manner of peculiar questions about the past. Christmas is, of course, deeply rooted in tradition, with many people favouring a particular way of spending the day. I wondered what people in Ibstock had done on past Christmas days, and the answer was less predictable than you might think.Football fans of today love Christmas because of the glut of matches over the festive period, with Boxing Day being a routine match day out. Rugby Advertiser of December 28th, 1951, carries a report about a match Ibstock Penistone Rovers played – actually on Christmas morning itself! This was for an away match at Rugby Town, against their Reserves team. Our Rovers did their best and managed two goals, but sadly went down 5-2, with all of Rugby Town Reserves’ scored by one man: Dennis Fretwell. If you’re wondering if you have any footballers in your family history, this is how Ibstock Penistone Rovers lined up that day in 1951: A. Thorne, J. Thompson, H. Whitehead, B. Shepherd, R. Brooks, A. Bancroft, F. Woodward, D. Remington, D. Clay, B. Wood, P. Wood. Ibstock’s goals were scored by F. Woodward and P. Wood. None of the away team’s first names were given in Rugby Advertiser.

Slightly further back in time, Ibstock “schoolroom” was the venue for a “Treat to Old Men”, as the weekly Saturday publication Leicester Chronicle described it during a short article in the January 9th, 1892

edition. Now, smoking has been banned from public indoor venues, but it used to be considered very much as a refined and social activity. So back in the late nineteenth century, this “party of men, all over 65 years of age” were the lucky invitees who enjoyed an “excellent meat tea… after which all who enjoyed a smoke were provided with pipes and tobacco. Several ladies and gentlemen waited upon the party, and afterwards united to amuse them with music, singing, recitations, etc. Before breaking up all present joined in singing the Christmas carol “While shepherds watched their flocks by night… and the National Anthem.” Curiously, this party of a Christmas flavour took place not in December, but on Tuesday, 5th January!

Going to a meeting to debate raising funds for public expenditure hardly sounds seasonable for Christmas week. Nor was the subject matter of the local parish council meeting very Christmassy – or itself subject to very much goodwill. Yet on Thursday, 19th December 1895, the parish council met in Ibstock’s National Schoolroom to discuss raising money towards the local efforts to

comply with the Public Libraries Act, 1892. Leicester Chronicle (21st December, 1895) briefly summarises what appears to have been quite a divisive meeting of “about thirty electors”. “Mr T. Hextall, J.P., asked whether the meeting was really a necessity,” and the “Clerk replied that although the act had been adopted, it was doubtful whether money could be raised by the Parish Council without the sanction of the precise amount.” Despite his previous reticence, “Mr Hextall then moved that at a rate of three farthings in the £, to raise £36, be sanctioned.” Although his proposal was seconded by Mr S. Bridgett, “Mr D. Ringrose moved, and Mr T. Newbold seconded, that no rate be levied.” The Chronicle notes that “Mr W. Eggington expressed surprise that a member of the Parish Council should oppose the motion. Ibstock was behind the times, and it seemed to be the policy of some people to keep it behind.” The article states that the “amendment was carried by fifteen to nine”. Whilst it is clear from this Christmas-time meeting that not everyone responsible for serving the public was in favour of the radical new free book-lending scheme, the Ibstock community did eventually get their library.

December Annual Meal

It’s that time of year again, when The Palace Players blow the panto sized cobwebs off of the dame’s ‘bloomers’ and start singing and dancing their way through rehearsals!

Their choice for 2019 is ‘Dick Whittington’; a traditional pantomime, first shown at Covent Garden in 1814.

The pantomime is based on a real person, Richard Whittington, who was Lord Mayor of London, 3 times. He financed ‘Alms houses’ for the poor, rebuilt Newgate Prison (where his cat is featured on the gates) and did much work for charity. The story has been slightly embellished and we are almost certain that he didn’t have a talking cat!

The Palace Players will stay (almost) true to the original tale that has been told for the last 200 years. Dick, the son of poor parents, sets off to London to make his fortune, accompanied by his cat. He falls in love with Alice, the daughter of the Alderman Fitzwarren, (who happens to own a successful fast food restaurant). While working with the Cook Cecily and her Son Lazy Jack, Dick gets set up by the evil Queen Rat, receives wonky advice from a cockney fairy and joins the Navy. From there his adventures sees him, stranded in an eastern land, then returned to London, to rid the town of rats and become Lord Mayor; cue a showdown between cat and rats! The now much celebrated Dick, marries Alice and lives happily ever after, in typical panto style. All that with a lot of singing, dancing and slapstick in between!

This traditional family pantomime will be performed at The Palace, High Street, Ibstock, on Friday 1st February and Saturday 2nd February, plus Friday 8th February and Saturday 9th February. All evening performances will start at 7.30pm and there will be two Saturday 2.30pm matinee performances. Tickets are £7.50 for adults and £5.00 for children and are available from The Palace (Tel: 01530 262400) and Ibstock Business Centre, High Street, Ibstock (Tel: 01530 267300).

Advanced booking is highly recommended to avoid disappointment.

PERSONAL INJURY & CLINICAL NEGLIGENCE SPECIALISTS

page 19 Advertise here from just £5 per month!

Josiah Hincks are delighted to have been awarded the accolade of Small Law Firm of the Year by the Leicestershire Law Society at a spectacular “The Greatest Show” themed event which took place at Athena on Friday 27th April.

The awards give the opportunity to highlight the key legal individuals in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland who stand out as ambassadors for the industry.

The award is testament to the continued growth of Josiah Hincks, which celebrated its 90th birthday last year.

A number of the Josiah Hincks team, along with their guests, attended the black tie event to bear witness to the best of the best receiving the recognition they deserve for providing excellent legal services across the County.

Josiah Hincks also received a special mention from the Leicestershire Law Society for raising a significant amount of money during the silent auction which took place on the night, the proceeds of which are to be donated to PROSTaid, a local independent prostate and prostate cancer charity.

During the last five years, by nurturing willing staff to grow and develop and by recruiting the best legal advisors, Josiah Hincks has grown to a five partner firm, doubling our size in turnover and staff and increasing our presence in the County with five offices.

Our continued growth reflects our vision to be the very best example of a county law firm; providing expert and specialist advice on matters, at affordable rates and offering access to justice to those in need.

Our specialist team of lawyers continue to act for a number of high profile businesses in the region, including Leicester Tigers, Breedon

Group, Cambridge & Counties Bank and East Coast Fittings, along with a number of small- medium sized businesses, typically owner managed, between £5-10m, across a wide range of sectors.

Staff numbers are now at 50, with 25 fee earners across all departments including a new Business Defence Department, aimed at assisting those businesses subjected to quasi-criminal prosecutions, regulatory and other investigations.

Whilst many firms have sought to exit the Personal Injury sector in light of low fixed fee work, whereas we at Josiah Hincks believe there remains a need for high quality, local advice for those who have been injured or subject to clinical negligence. We have therefore sought to invest and grow in that department, rather than reduce it.

Senior Partner, Andrew Eagle said, “I feel privileged to be the Senior Partner of such a fabulous firm. What a great team we have. I look forward to what the next 12 months will bring for the firm, with our plans for continued growth and development”.

Inspired by this photograph appearing on our Facebook page, thoughts of Ibstock Junior School Christmas celebrations in the 1960’s came to mind. This photograph may not have been taken at the Junior School, however, there is one clue the party hats!

Looking back, Christmas didn’t seem to start as early as it does nowadays. The idea that Christmas was upon us became apparent by the different items that appeared in the classroom. The craft afternoon took on a seasonal twist, with cotton wool, toilet roll middles, card, crayons, glitter, gummed strips and the big box of assorted coloured crepe paper.

Preparations: When you had finished making your Christmas card or your snowman (with the toilet roll middle and cotton wool) and had made your share of the paper chains to decorate the classroom, you were allowed to approach the crepe paper box and choose two colours (and ONLY two!) to make your hat for the Christmas party. The teacher would help each child individually and it seemed they only knew how to make three styles, so the same styles were repeated throughout the class, but in varying colours.

Excitement grew when the Christmas tree arrived and was positioned in the middle

of the hall, by the music hall door and the piano. In the week before the party the school choir would stand by the tree and lead the whole school in the carols, which we practiced each morning, in assembly.

Party days: There were two parties, one for Years 1 and 2 and another for years 3 and 4. Children would arrive back in school at 5.00pm, with their labelled cup, plate, dish and spoon. Before tea was served, there were party games and dancing. There was much enjoyment as the children danced their way around the hall, with the Barn Dance, Gay Gordons, ‘A hunting we will go’, the Hokey Cokey, the Lambeth Walk and Musical Chairs. The Musical Chairs

Champion was an accolade everyone wanted. It was split into girls and boys and invariably, Mr. Hughes had to stop the piano to admonish the boys for their boisterous behaviour in trying to win the game! After tea, the children would gather around the Christmas tree to sing carols and Christmas songs. As the school bell rang a visitor arrived; Father Christmas, who gave each child an orange and a bar of chocolate. Children would collect their crockery and spoon and happily make their way home. Do you have any memories of those party days?

The Ibstock Historical Society would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas.

Drink driving is deadly. In 2015, 8,000 people in the UK were hurt by drink drivers – and 220 were killed.

Everybody knows that drink driving is against the law. Yet, over 70,000 people are still caught doing it by the police every year.

If someone is convicted of drink driving they face six months in prison, a driving ban for a year, or a hefty fine.

What if I see someone drink and drive?Call the police. “If you see someone attempting to operate a vehicle while intoxicated, please call 999 as this may require urgent police action.” You might need to supply:

• the vehicle’s registration number and a description (including colour and make).

• a description of the drink driver and their name and address if you know it.

• other useful information such as the places they often drink, where they usually drive and if they have access to any other vehicles.

• Meanwhile, if you want to report a drink driver after the drink driving has taken place, you can call the police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Four steps to reporting a drink driver1. Talk to them (but only if it’s safe) beware of doing this

with strangers, they may get violent or abusive.

2. Tell the bar staff or security, they should be trained to deal with the situation.

3. Phone 999. If you see someone about to drink and drive call 999 and ask for the police.

4. Have the facts. Be prepared to tell police the car’s registration number, a description of the vehicle and the person involved, if you can.

Many of the functions that we depend on to drive safely are affected when we drink alcohol:

• The brain takes longer to receive messages from the eye

• Processing information becomes more difficult

• Instructions to the body’s muscles are delayed resulting in slower reaction times.

You can also experience blurred and double vision, which affects your ability to see things clearly while you are driving. And you’re more likely to take potentially dangerous risks because you can act on urges you normally repress.

There is no fool-proof way of drinking and staying under the drink drive limit. The amount of alcohol you would need to drink to be considered over the driving limit varies from person to person. It depends on:

• Your weight, age, sex and metabolism

• The type and amount of alcohol you’re drinking

• What you’ve eaten recently

• Your stress levels at the time

Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your ability to drive so the only safe advice is to avoid any alcohol if you are driving.

Remember, someone can still be over the legal alcohol limit the day after drinking.

In unison with thousands of communities all over the country, Ibstock and many surrounding towns and villages, came together on Sunday, 11th November, to take part in this year’s remembrance commemorations. Servicemen and women, both past and present, were honoured in an act of remembrance and gratitude. Crowds turned out, in record numbers, to honour the memory of our fallen and injured heroes. The customary two minutes of silence and reflection, the parade and the laying of poppy wreaths were even more poignant this year, as they marked the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Local shops and residents made their own, personal tributes in honour of our heroes.

IBSTOCKREMEMBERS

REMEMBERING JOHN MAINIt is with great sadness the Ibstock branch of the Royal British Legion must inform you of the passing of our standard bearer, Mr John Main. When John joined the Ibstock branch, he very quickly became involved with the Legion projects, which he executed with great enthusiasm and passion. When the standard bearer position became available, he quickly put himself forward and took the responsibility very seriously; taking care of the standard as if it was his own. We at the branch, all his colleagues and some very good friends, could always rely on John, whenever we needed help with anything. His hard work and commitment are going to be greatly missed. We send our condolences to his family and close friends at this time of loss.It is time now John, to rest, my friend...so goodnight, God bless and sweet dreams.John Walls, on behalf of the Ibstock Branch of the Royal British Legion.

‘MEET THE FAMILY’Did you know that the Community Voice magazine now has TWO ‘sister’ publications, covering the Whitwick, Thringstone and Swannington area and Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Packington?

The Community Voice magazine was first launched in the Ibstock area in August 2015. It was instigated by a director of Ibstock Community Enterprises Ltd, to promote and help local businesses and organisations throughout the area and to keep people informed about what is happening locally. The Ibstock and Market Bosworth magazine now has a distribution of 8,000, covering an additional 13 villages. These include Ellistown, Heather, Swepstone, Newton Burgoland, Donington-Le-Heath, Battram, Ravenstone, Bagworth, Snarestone, Nailstone and Hugglescote.

From the onset, the monthly magazine was not just intended to be a directory of businesses, but to be seen as a “good read”. It includes interesting features about local characters, history, businesses and events, plus monthly competitions and our amazing local ‘Charity Champions’. All the magazines are posted through the letterboxes of homes and businesses, with additional copies available from nominated ‘pickup points’.

Due to the success of the Ibstock magazine, we were invited, by Whitwick Parish Council, to set up a similar magazine for Whitwick, Thringstone and Swannington, as there was no local magazine serving that area. This was launched in October 2016, with a distribution of over 6,000 and has rapidly become just as popular as the Ibstock and Market Bosworth edition. It has it’s own identity and covers events and includes editorial content, relevant to it’s own immediate area.

In October, we launched our newest edition, covering the Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Packington area. We have received a great response from the readership and businesses in the area and this third edition sees our total distribution increased to over 20,000; making us one of the largest in North West Leicestershire.

Businesses advertising in all three publications have the advantage of getting ‘their message’ out to a much wider readership and also benefit from the reduced advertising rates on offer.

In an exciting new development, The Community Voice has recently teamed up with Hermitage FM radio, to offer a ‘multi-media’ advertising package. We are delighted to see our first ‘mutual advertiser’ taking to the air-waves and having their products and services broadcast across the whole of North West Leicestershire!

We are always ready to help you to promote your business or to hear about any interesting local news or intriguing historical information.

Coalville Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club at the Hermitage FM Community Coffee Lounge“Involvement ends isolation, giving veterans a sense of belonging, which many of us lost, when we left our respective services... those attending AFVBC’s are stronger together, because we have ‘returned to the tribe’!”

DERECK J. HARDMAN former soldier and founder of the Armed Forces and

Veterans Breakfast Clubs network

Back in January, the Coalville Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club was officially opened by the, then Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council, Councillor Virge Richichi, accompanied by the club founder, Mr Bill Brown. The opening was also attended by the Right Reverend Martyn Snow, Bishop of Leicester.

In October, the club received a visit from the Minister for ‘Defence People and Veterans’, the Rt Hon Tobias Ellwood MP. Surrounding clubs were also invited to attend this prestigious event.

Located at the Hermitage FM Community Coffee Lounge, Memorial Square, Coalville, the club is run by Armed Forces and Veterans, for Armed Forces and Veterans. There is no cost to those attending, apart from the charge for food and drink. There are no subs or donations and it is completely free to members. As long as you have a service history, or association, then you will be made welcome. Relatives and dependants are equally welcome and are encouraged to come along and join in. There is no need to book a place.

The club is indebted to Jan and Jon from Hermitage FM Community Radio, who host the club in Hermitage FM Coffee Lounge. The club are also massively grateful to the fantastic staff, led by Susie, who are outstanding. The service they provide is very much appreciated.

The club meet at the Hermitage FM Coffee Lounge at 9.30 am, on the last Saturday of the month. For more details contact Bill Brown on Tel: 01530 835839 or 07876 748113 or email: [email protected]. You can also find out ‘what’s on’ and join the club by applying on the local Coalville Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club’s Facebook group.

GIVE YOUR PET A HAPPY CHRISTMASBy not letting them eat the wrong foods! Christmas is just around the corner and as usual, is likely to be a chaotic time with all sorts of foods and presents left unattended. It is worth remembering that some of these appear very attractive to our pets even though some could turn out to be unpleasant or even dangerous for them. Dogs in particular are very curious, investigating and eating things that are bad for them, including the ones left under the tree or plants decorating the house!

FOODS THAT ARE TOXIC:

If your pet should eat any of the following foods it may be best to have a chat with your vet!

CHOCOLATE: Never leave boxes of chocolates under the tree (including advent calendars).

GRAPES AND DRIED FOOD: This includes Christmas Pud, mince pies and cake, onions, garlic. Leeks and shallots are bad news (this includes sage and onion stuffing).

ALCOHOL: Obviously goes without saying!

MACADEMIA NUTS: Not a good idea!

LEFTOVER FOOD: Particularly if it has started to go mouldy!

CHRISTMAS GIFTS: The following are normally low toxicity but could still cause a stomach upset. Worth talking to the vet if digested:

Silica Gel, Christmas Decorations, Crepe or Wrapping Paper, Candles, Pot Pourri.

CHRISTMAS PLANTS: The following plants are classed as low toxicity but may cause mild stomach upset:

Mistletoe, Holly, Ivy, Christmas Trees (the needles are an irritant).

LILIES: All parts of this plant are toxic to cats including the pollen.

Keep your pets away from these dangers and like you, they will have a Happy Christmas!

THE ODD ONE OUT!

RUFFLE’S “FIND THE WORD” IS: FESTIVAL

THE ODD ONE OUT!ANSWERS:

A) Cupid

B) Comet

C) Rudolf

D) Vixen

A, B and D are, in traditional lore, names of reindeer that pulled Santa’s sleigh. Rudolf, however, is a 20th century addition. Therefore C is the odd one out.
