30536a - Progress challenge 1 Design Read the project outline for this unit (Assessment 1). The project asks you to design and build a website called TheGourmetCyclist.com.au. After reading the document, make sure you understand the scenario, client and target audience. Start by doing some background research and initial design work, such as thumbnail sketches. Consider which authoring tools might be suitable for the project. TIP: Navigate to the student forum to engage in the discussion with your peers: TheGourmetCyclist.com.au NOTE: : You will need to refer to this case study in Progress Challenges 1-3, which form the basis of your submission in Assessment 1. You have been engaged by a regional council to promote tourism in their area. They hope to capture a market of people interested in trying gourmet food and wine in a rural setting. Their research has indicated a growing number of people in this category are also interested in cycling. Their concept is to provide information via a website to attract people to do short cycling tours through country towns. This would typically be through quiet country roads in wine and farm regions where the terrain is flat. Visitors stop along the way to sample local produce and stay at B&Bs.

The council would like the site to be called TheGourmetCyclist.com.au and have registered a domain name. The site will stand-alone and is not connected with the council site. The council would like you to design and build the website starting with the home page (index.html) and one destination town (bright.html). Your pages should engage and attract the audience. On the home page will be a link to the first destination, bright.html. The destination page will be used as a prototype. When it is tested and working it will be converted into a template and used to create two other destinations in the same layout. The client has supplied some photos of Bright, which you are free to use. This forum is for discussion on -

Progress Challenge 1: Design1 Having read the scenario (Appendix A)2, do some background research about the possible target audience. gourmet travel, cycling holidays and the region around Bright, which is in North East Victoria. Begin to collate a folder of information that may help you. Design a layout for the homepage and the Bright destination page, using sound design principles. You may start your designs on paper as roughs and then work them up using Photoshop or a similar product to lay them out. Locate content. For imagery, you may use the client’s supplied photos in the file (bright_photos.zip), or source other royalty free images and artwork. Write your own text from your research (do not copy and paste it from other sites). Submit the designs of the Home and Destination pages for approval. Design constraints: Design should be for a Desktop computer approx. 1000px wide. The design may be fixed to this size or liquid. You can source your own imagery, video or others assets but copyrighted materials should not be used. Write meaningful content.

Answer For the first page, I named it GourmetCyclist.com/index and for the second one, I named it GourmetCyclist.com/Bright Here is my information about Bright:

It is a location in the Victorian High Country region3, and has many great places to eat, as well as scenic walks and bicycle tracks.

The various events that are happening: the Audax Alpine Classic, the Peaks Challenge and the Junior Mountain Cycling Championship. Moreover, if you do not wish to cycle the whole time, there are many other activities in the High Country – scenic lookouts, camping, National Parks and Reserves, walking and Hiking8. There are also many opportunities to sample the cuisine9: Bright Brewery, Alpine Cellars, Restaurants and places to eat, including Bright Chocolate10. I have added a mock-up first to Open Colleges Discussion forum and received some positive feedback from my trainer, Wendy Campbell. She stated that a ‘hero’ image and more content would ‘lift the image’ of the design11. Here is how it looked when done in Illustrator.

I then did the two pages, the index page and the Bright page. This is how they will looked when I designed them using Dreamweaver. The Bright page has more text because I was able to research my information on Bright. I feel I could add more information to the Home (index) page after doing more research on some other destinations. I chose the fonts (Rockwell) and colours because I felt they would add a rustic air to the pages.

30536a – Progress Challenge 02 Build prototype Now you have experimented with some basic skills in Dreamweaver, put together the home page index.html and the destination page bright.html for TheGourmetCyclist.com.au. Remember, you may use your preferred authoring tool as long as the site meets the requirements of the project (see assessment guide). TIP: Navigate to the student forum to engage in the discussion with your peers. After your designs have been approved by the “client” (your trainer), build the site in Dreamweaver or another authoring tool of your own choice. Define a new site and file structure to hold files and assets. Create the home page (index.html) and destination page (bright.html) as per your designs from Activity 1 - Design. Fill the pages with meaningful content. Link the two pages. Check that these tasks have been completed –

1. Interface has been sliced up and exported as images 2. Pages constructed in authoring tool 3. CSS styles (preferably as an external file) 4. Buttons/links work 5. Alt tags for all images

6. At least one media asset (video, animation) 7. Pages have titles 8. Zip the whole site and submit here for discussion.

Answer After much fussing about with Dreamweaver, trying to write in code and not getting far with it, I figured I would be better off with Muse, as it was much quicker. Therefore, here is the plan I made with Muse (I added a few more pages, such as two more destinations, a gallery page and a contact page):

Moreover, here is the work I did so far with the Index/Home page and with Bright:

Figure 2: Please note I have a scroll-down sub-menu for the Destinations tab.

Figure 3: with this page, I was considering adding a composition as the body of information was too large for the page

Originally, I wanted to keep it simple. However, though, I did receive feedback from my trainer, Wendy Campbell. Here is what she had to say:

I then decided to create a new banner. Here are two versions – one with plain text and the other with 3D effects added. I felt it would give the impression of being in front of an old building in an urban area, a corner store in a rural one or a ‘retro’ ad in a magazine.

I also did a wireframe or rudimentary version of how I wanted the site to look. Here is how I expected the Index and Bright pages to look.

11 of 20

Due to technical glitches in my previous site, I had to ditch the previous plan and start afresh. Here is what I have done so far with the new plan: I have added the new banner on the Master page, change the colour scheme and layout, and added a few widgets to the footer (badges for social media).

12 of 20

For the Home page, I have added an introductory text and a slide show.

In the next screenshot, you can see a drop-down submenu in the navigation bar (which features the three destinations).

I have also added a ‘Destinations’ page with a composition slide show.

13 of 20

For the ‘Bright’ page, I added two videos of Bright, as well as an accordion panel (featuring information on Bright).

At this stage, I have yet to add (and change) a few more pictures, and I have already started on the pages for my next two destinations – Clare Valley (South Australia) and Ulladulla (New South Wales). I will discuss these further in the next Progress Challenge, however. In the meantime, I had updated the Index and Bright (destination) pages).

Upon placing my work onto the Open Space forum, I received this feedback from my trainer, Wendy. Though this was on the Progress Challenge 1 thread, I felt it was more relevant to Progress Challenge 2 because that was when I have made the changes to the banner. Here is what she had to say12:

12 Open Colleges (2016): Progress Challenge 01 (thread) in Study Period 6, Module 1 Forum, https://learning.opencolleges.edu.au/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=90737

Here is what she had to say about Progress Challenge 2 (this feedback comes with a helpful suggestion also)13:

This was due to the original site not exporting terribly well to html (when it came to viewing the pages offline, even though it previewed well on both my browsers). 13 Open Colleges (2016): Progress Challenge 02 (thread) in Study Period 6, Module 1 Forum, https://learning.opencolleges.edu.au/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=90738
