Our Vision and Approach
• A set of tracks can transport all kinds of raw materials and finished goods. Why? Because a common gauge is used.
• Envision SEDD as a set of electronic tracks over which all kinds of raw and processed electronic information can flow. Why? Because a common structure and data element dictionary are used.
• The SEDD logo is based on this vision. 13 March 2011 3 SEDD - An Introduction
What is SEDD?
• The Staged Electronic Data Deliverable (SEDD) uses a common structure to describe diverse laboratory activities and report analytical data electronically.
• SEDD allows users to link analytical data to the underlying laboratory activities and processes to provide full traceability. The final results can be linked back to the raw instrument data from which the final results were derived.
• SEDD provides a means for reporting complex analytical relationships.

What SEDD is NOT.
• SEDD is NOT a database. • SEDD is NOT a analytical method. • SEDD is NOT a set of analytical requirements.

History of SEDD
• Many attempts have been made to create THE universal Electronic Data Deliverable (EDD). But all failed because the EDD was based on a single agency’s vision of what ‘universal’ really meant from their perspective.
• DOE/DOD/EPA’s effort to create a universal EDD – DEEMS (June 1995).
• In November 2000, EPA met with USACE and jointly agreed to move forward with a multiagency EDD.
• The first complete version of SEDD was released on August 2003.
• SEDD was adopted by USEPA and USACE programs in 2004.

Use of SEDD Files
• One structure to report various types of data (chemical, radiochemical, biological, etc.).
• Uniform reporting. • Laboratory Checking. • Automated review of Laboratory Data. • Long term storage of Analytical data in XML.
