1. SED Safety

SED is looking forward to working with you and providing assistance to ensure an accurate and code

compliant installation.

SED does not hold the subcontractors responsible for the performance of our system design.

The only requirement is that all subcontractors install all of the SED Total Flow® HVAC system components

and air distribution system (ductwork) according to the enclosed instructions.

If at anytime there is a question about the SED design, or a potential deviation from the design, the subcontractor

should call SED for clarification.

NO CHANGES TO THE SED SPECIFICATIONS AND DESIGN ARE PERMITTED WITHOUT WRITTEN APPROVAL

FROM AN SED REPRESENTATIVE.

WARNING:

Before performing service or maintenance operations on a system, turn off main power

switches to the indoor unit. If applicable, turn off the accessory heater power switch.

Electrical shock could cause personal injury.

Installing and servicing heating and air conditioning equipment can be hazardous due to

system pressure and electrical components. Only trained and qualified service personnel

should install, repair or service heating and air conditioning equipment. Untrained personnel

can perform the basic maintenance functions of cleaning coils and cleaning and replacing

filters. All other operations should be performed by trained service personnel. When working

on heating and air conditioning equipment, observe the precautions in the literature, tags and

labels attached to the unit and other safety precautions that may apply. Follow all safety codes,

wear safety glasses and work gloves. Use a quenching cloth for brazing operations and have a

fire extinguisher available.

Note: HVAC contractor assumes responsibility for any contamination of air distribution

system due to incomplete or improper sealing. Air distribution system must be kept clean.

Equipment should not be used for temporary heating and cooling as per manufacturer and

state building codes.

HVAC equipment is not to be started-up without the express written consent of Scientific

Environmental Design.

Before installing ductwork, clean the inside surfaces with Lysol disinfectant to ensure the

ductwork is absolutely clean.

2. Ductwork Installation

Ductwork Installation Notes and Mechanical Code RequirementsHVAC contractor is responsible for all field measurements to ensure proper fit of ductwork and proper access

to equipment prior to installation.

1. Low R/A transfers to be installed approximately 1-1/2” above baseboards.

2. High R/A transfers to be installed approximately 6” below crown molding.

3. Under cut all interior doors 7/8” for proper air ventilation.

4. HVAC contractor is responsible for coordinating with owner/builder to ensure that no roof water run off can come in contact with the outdoor unit. Gutters or rain diverters must be installed.

5. HVAC contractor assumes responsibility for any contamination of air distribution system due to incomplete or improper sealing. Air distribution system must be kept clean.

6. If this is a counter-flow application. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for drip shield installation.

7. Before installing ductwork, clean the inside surfaces with Lysol disinfectant to ensure the ductwork is absolutely clean.

8. Mechanical contractor is to read and follow manufacturer’s installation instructions for all HVAC and related equipment and keep instruction manuals on-site.

WARNING: Provide dry contact from central fire/smoke alarm system to deactivate 24V low

voltage to air handler in the event of fire or smoke signal in the house detection system if HVAC

zone exceeds 2000 cfm.

WARNING: Refer to the SED Design Drawings for HVAC, Duct, Insulation and Electrical details for

Project Specific Information.

9. HVAC Contractor to coordinate with electrician for 120V electrical outlet for condensate pumps and air purifications units, if applicable.

10. Important: Advise electrical contractors to replace all equipment access panels that were removed for wiring. Unit must be kept clean. Do not leave access door off after wiring.

11. Ensure that internal air handler insulation is properly secured.

12. All vertical and round ducts are hard sheet metal.

13. Install fire dampers where necessary to comply with state and local codes.

14. Flexible duct performance and installation must meet the “R” values per ASTM C-518 standards.

15. Remove all nails from joist chase areas to prevent puncturing flexible air duct located in joist or trusses.

16. Securely tape and seal all flex duct liner to sheet metal “A” collar and securely install the strap band over taped liner. No tie straps are to be installed over the duct installation.

17. All flex duct must be properly installed such that no air flow restrictions exist.

18. All rectangular trunk line dimensions are outside (sheet metal) dimensions.

19. Cover with plastic and tape all openings in ductwork and equipment not completely connected or installed. This will prevent dirt and dust from entering into the duct system or equipment. Air distribution systems must be kept clean to prevent a breeding surface for mold growth.

20. All flexible air duct liner is to be pulled tight and straight without twisting.

21. Flex duct 12” diameter or greater must be supported every 24” with 3” strapping.

22. All external duct wrap joints must be stapled and taped. Tape must be 3” FSK foil tape and covered with mastic sealer.

23. All ceiling, floor, sidewall boots, elbows and R/A transfer sleeves are to be painted flat black on the inside.

24. Sheet metal screws shall not be used for installing registers, grilles or diffusers.

All openings in ductwork or equipment not completely connected,

must be covered to prevent debris from entering system.

WARNING: No exposed fibers in duct lining. Any tears or exposed fibers shall be replaced or properly

secured by an approved sealer encapsulating all loose fibers. HVAC contractor assumes

responsibility for damaged duct liners and vapor barriers around duct insulation.

3. Air Distribution Components

• All splitter dampers that exceed 20 inches in width are to be two layers of sheet metal with a ribbed edge of three layers as shown.

• Do not use more than 1 damper rod unless otherwise noted on plans.

chambers with 1 inch big bubble duct foil insulation

M/N RHVBB48075. Paint all taped joints with mastic sealer.

Volume dampers are not to extend inside plenum chamber.

Typical “Y” Plenum Chamber Detail

RECTANGULAR SHEET METAL DUCT

A. Ductwork in crawlspaces and in insulated/uninsulated basements and between conditioned spaces.

Install as follows:

1. No duct liner, unless otherwise noted on plans, [when specified on plans, duct liner is to be securely glued and pinned. (Liner touching liner – no exposed fibers.)] Externally wrap with R-8 Reflectix 1” big bubble insulation M/N RHVBB48075 using 3” FSK foil tape. Paint all taped joints with mastic sealer.

2. All splitter fittings to have push-rod splitter dampers for positive control of air flow, and checked for proper movement. Push rod tightly secured to damper.

3. All joints in rectangular duct must be sealed with siliconized acrylic latex caulk or a substitute approved by SED. Call SED at 866-330-5418 if unsure of sealant.

4. Guidelines for sizing gauge of galvanized duct are as follows:

For widths: Up to 14” use 28 gauge

Up to 24” use 26 gauge

Up to 36” use 24 gauge

Over 36” use 22 gauge

Note: Notify SED immediately if head room problems exist.

5. Guidelines for sizing gauge of aluminum B and 5 duct are as follows:

For widths: Up to 14” use 24 gauge

Up to 35” use 22 gauge

Up to 47” use 20 gauge

Up to 47” use 18 gauge

6. Provide canvas connectors on supply and return at unit (caulk and wrap with R8 Relfectix 1” Big Bubble foil insulation M/N RHVBB48075 (unless not displayed on drawing).

7. Trunk lines spanning greater than 32” must be supported with angle drives, top and bottom. (Angle drives are not to be installed inside of the trunk line).

8. All turns must be radius turns, inside and out.

9. All trunk duct angles over 60 degrees shall have inside radius turns (square corners cannot be accepted unless noted on plans.)

10. Support trunk lines every four (4) feet maximum.

B. Ductwork in attics is to be installed using general specs above. Wrap all rectangular ductwork in uninsulated

attic spaces with double layer of 1” Big Bubble Foil Insulation with 1” air space. *Must be installed at proper

thickness. Note: All duct wrap must be installed without compressing insulation.

ROUND BRANCH DUCTS – FLEX

A. General

1. Volume dampers in feeder lines are not required unless noted on plans.

2. All take-offs, “A” collars, and boots are to be caulked (tightly sealed and insulated).

3. Flex duct 10Ø or less must be supported at least every 32” minimum with 2” wide straps. Flex duct greater than 10Ø must be supported at least every 24” minimum with 3” wide straps.

4. Flex duct turns over 60 degrees must have sheet metal elbows.

5. All flex duct foil facing and insulation shall form tightly against trunk lines (at “A” collars) no exposed insulation.

B. Installed by Location

1. Flex duct in attic spaces must be R-8 foil faced or better.

2. Flex duct in sealed crawlspaces and basements must be R-6 foil faced or better.

3. Flex duct in unsealed crawlspaces must be R-8 foil faced.

VENTILATION (PROVIDE AS SEPARATE PRICE QUOTE)

A. It is the responsibility of the HVAC contractor to vent pipe all bath fans and dryers.

B. All bath fans must be vented with 1” insulation around flex pipe to prevent condensation (in unconditioned areas).

C. Kitchen ventilation (separately priced). To be installed per manufacturer’s specifications. Wall and roof

penetrations to be provided by others.

REGISTERS AND GRILLES

A. All registers and grilles are to be from ONE of the following approved manufacturers: Hart & Cooley, TrueAir,

PROSELECT or METALAIRE, size and type as shown unless otherwise stated on drawing or approved

replacement by SED. For ordering information, call SED at (866) 330-5418.

B. If applicable, floor registers (or registers approved by SED) must be 8” off all walls with windows, 6” off exterior

walls without windows, and 3” off interior walls. Same manufacturer requirements apply to floor registers.

C. All low return air openings and transfer grilles must be located 1-1/2” above base board unless otherwise noted

on plans.

D. All ceiling boots are to be wood framed in place.

EQUIPMENT

A. Provide EZ trapped condensate primary and secondary drains for all equipment.

B. Provide auxiliary drain pan for equipment located over conditioned spaces with float switch.

C. Set air handlers high enough to ensure proper drainage of condensate lines.

D. HVAC Contractor is responsible for providing all equipment bases.

E. Tape air handlers and coil accesses and other areas where leakage can occur.

F. Air handlers and coils located in vented attic spaces must be insulated externally. (Do not insulate bottom of coil).

G. Do not dry wall mechanical room. Mechanical room to be lined with SED radiant barrier/Heat Shield, by insulator.

H. No open drains or clean outs allowed when Mechanical room is used as return air plenum (R/A).

MISCELLANEOUS

A. Use strap type hangers for all ductwork.

B. HVAC contractor is responsible for all field measurements to ensure proper fit of ductwork and proper access

to equipment prior to installation.

C. Joist panning is strictly prohibited.

D. As shown on plan, cover/block all return and supply openings after rough-in to prevent debris accumulation.

Ductwork mu st be completely clean at all times.

E. HVAC contractor to coordinate with electrician the wiring of the separate factory sealed kilowatt hour meter

base for installation by electrical contractor – Kilowatt hour meter will be provided by SED Inc.

F. Push rods must face in direction of access or as shown on plans.

G. All boots, elbows, and ducts must be caulked at the completion of rough-in.

H. All boots and ducts penetrations through floors must be caulked (tightly sealed) at floor level.

Seal all duct penetration threw walls and ceilings leading into unconditioned spaces.

I. Floor joist must be properly cut and headed off as required. As stated on your contract, special cutting and boxing

is to be handled by general contractor.

Externally insulate all plenum chambers with 1” big bubble duct foil

insulation, tape with mastic tape and apply mastic sealer over tape.

Flex duct over 60 degrees must have sheet metal elbows.

Note: The finished height will depend on the lowest point made

by plumbing, structural beams and girders, electrical wiring, etc.,

which cannot be controlled by SED.

metal screws. (If in floor, caulk around edge water tight).

4. Air Handler Configuration

Air Handler/Coil – Condensate Drain Pan and Drip Shield ConfigurationSee Air Handler Installation Manual for Left-Hand Discharge.

These units are factory-configured for up-flow and horizontal right-hand discharge installation. For downflow

or horizontal left-hand discharge, certain field modifications are required.

Use the following procedures to configure the unit for horizontal left-hand discharge operations.

1. Before operating the unit, remove access panels and the horizontal drip shield (-060 model) and the corrugated

padding between the blower and coil assembly. Discard the corrugated packing.

2. Pull the coil assembly from unit. Pull off the horizontal drain pan.

3. Remove the drain plugs from back drain holes on horizontal drain pan and reinstall them on front holes.

Important: After removal of drain pan plug(s), check

drain hole(s) to verify that drain opening is fully open

and free of any debris. Also check to make sure

that no debris has fallen into the drain pan during

installation that may plug up the drain opening.

Note: For horizontal applications, a secondary drain

pan is recommended. Refer to local codes.

Note: Be very careful when you reinstall the screws

into coil end plate engaging holes. Misaligned screws

may damage the coil.

Horizontal left-hand discharge application

4. Rotate drain pan 180° front-to-back and install it on the

opposite side of the coil.

5. Remove screws from top cap. Remove horizontal drip

shield screw located in the center of the back coil end

seal as illustrated in Figure 1.

6. Rotate horizontal drip shield 180° front to back.

7. Remove plastic plug from left hole on coil front end seal

and reinstall plug in back hole. Reinstall horizontal drip

shield screw in front coil end seal. Drip shield should drain

downward into horizontal drain pan inside coil. Figure 2.

8. Rotate top cap 180° front-to-back and align with unused

screw holes. Holes must align with front and back coil

end plates. The top cap has a 45° bend on one side and

90 bend on the other. The 90° bend must be on the same

side as the horizontal drain pan as illustrated in Figure 1.

9. From the up-flow position, flip cabinet 90° to the left and

set into place. Replace blower assembly. Secure coil in

place by bending down the tap on the cabinet support

rail as illustrated in both Figures 1 and 2.

10. Install the horizontal shield (-060 model) on the front

edge of the horizontal drain pan as illustrated in Figure 2.

Use figure 3 to locate specific components of the airhandler assembly.

1. Remove the A, B and C access panels.

2. Remove air filter D.

3. Remove and discard the corrugated blower supportpad E which is located between the blower I and coilG assemblies.

4. Remove coil piping plate F.

5. Remove the coil assembly G from unit.

6. Remove the horizontal drain pan H from the blower coilassembly.

7. Remove wide top cap from the coil assembly if it is−048 or −060, −148 and −160 size units.

8. Install narrow top cap X if unit is a −048, −060, −148 and−160 size units.

9. Rotate cabinet 180� from the upright position.

NOTE � It may be necessary to remove the blower

assembly to lighten the cabinet for lifting.

10. Remove the front access panels support bracket Jfrom the unit and set aside for re−installation later.

11. Three pairs (left and right) of coil support rails K areprovided. Use the information given in table 1 to selectthe proper rails for the application. Position and installa coil support rail on each side of the cabinet. The railmust be installed level with the door support which wasremoved..

12. Loosen the existing screw M on each side of the rearend of the cabinet. Slide the rear of the coil side

support rail slot over the screw and tighten the screwsecurely.

13. Use the existing screws L to secure the front end of thecoil side support rails and the existing door support.

14. Use table 2 to select the properly sized drip shields forthe unit. Drip shields divert condensate to drain panwhen blower coil is installed in the downflow position.

NOTE � Apply pre−cut foam tape as described in steps 15

and 16. The foam tape creates a seal between the drip

shield and both the coil and the drain pan so that water will

not be allowed into the air stream.

15. Apply two pieces of foam tape (provided) down bothends of each shield. The tape should measure 4−3/4"X 2" (120 X 25 mm). Ensure that the tape covers bothsides of the shield equally (see figures 4 and 5).

Note:

#1: The curved surface of the sensor must be attached directly and securely to the outside of

the pipe. Mount the CPLS at the top or sides of the pipe, not at the bottom. Do not exceed

the recommended pipe size. Larger diameter pipe will not allow good contact with the CPLS

surface. For best results, mount the CPLS inside the evaporator cabinet, on the evaporator

manifold or suction line before it exits the cabinet. Install tie strap to tightly secure.

#2: Insulate the CPLS and any exposed pipe with foam or cork insulation tape. Ambient

temperatures will affect the operation of the CPLS if not properly insulated.

Air distribution system must be kept clean. Before installing ductwork,

clean the inside surfaces with Lysol disinfectant to ensure the ductwork

is absolutely clean.

No exposed fibers in duct lining. Any tears or exposed fibers shall be replaced

or properly secured by an approved sealer encapsulating all loose fibers. HVAC

contractor assumes responsibility for damaged duct liners and vapor barriers

around duct insulation.

SED UNIVERSITY

6. ERV Installation

• ERV units will be supplied by owner and installed by HVAC contractor.

• All flexible air duct liner is to be pulled tight and straight without twisting.

• Mode of operation: ERV is powered on by 20/40/60 minute timer located as shown on SED wiring design on floor plans.

• Securely tape and seal all flex and duct liner to sheet metal “A” collar and securely install the tie strap band over taped liner. No tie straps are to be installed over the duct insulation.

• All flex duct must be properly installed such that no air flow restrictions exist.

• All external duct wrap joints must be stapled and taped. Tape must be 3” FSK foil tape and covered with mastic sealer.

• Cover with plastic and tape all openings in ductwork and equipment not completely connected or installed. This will prevent dirt and dust from entering into the duct system or equipment. Air distribution systems must be kept clean to prevent a breeding surface for mold growth.

7. Air Purification System

Photocatalytic Oxidation Device (PCO)All SED HVAC system designs include the Lennox PureAir™

indoor air filtration and purification device.

The PureAir device is installed upstream of the return air

plenum. Refer to the return air drawing for details and see

Appendix E. The PCO requires 120 V AC power; refer to the

electrical data sheet in the SED design drawings for details.

The air purification system helps to significantly reduce

levels of airborne volatile organic compounds, cooking

odors, common household odors, airborne dust particles,

mold spores, and pollen in conditioned spaces. The air

purification system includes a MERV 16 pleated filter, UVA

lamps, and a metal insert that is coated with a titanium

dioxide catalyst. As air enters the system, a percentage

of airborne particles and bio-aerosols, such as mold and

bacteria, larger than .3 microns are captured by the pleated

filter. The smaller airborne particles, odors, and chemicals

continue through the system. The UVA lamp activates the

catalyst on the metal insert. The catalyst captures and

destroys odors and chemical vapors as they flow through

the system. The absorbed pollutants on the surface of the

catalyst are oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. Tests

have shown greater than 50% reduction in the total volatile

organic compounds (TVOC’s) within 24 hours of initial

installation and operation of the air purification system.

Note: When the system is first started, it may take 24-48 hours to reduce the

airborne chemicals that have built up over a long period of time. After that period,

there will be a balance between chemicals emitted inside your conditioned space

and chemicals removed by this air purification system. This self-cleaning process does

not reintroduce toxic, post-process residue into the air. The toxicity of the treated air stream

is reduced, allowing the photocatalytic reactors to operate as a self-cleaning filter relative

to organic material on the catalyst surface.

8. SED High Volume Blower

Some HVAC systems designed by SED require more

cubic feet per minute (CFM) of airflow than a single

system can produce without modification. Rather than

simply adding another system, SED has developed a

method to allow for more airflow while still maintaining

the same energy savings and superior air quality we are

known for. We achieve this by installing a High Volume

Blower (HVB) in the air handler.

The On-Board Potentiometer Adjusts the Ideal Speed of the Air Handler

FINAL CHECKS OF THE MOTOR• Check the mounting and fastening of the motor and control unit. Make sure that motor and the control unit are securely mounted in the system.

• Check the control unit connectors. Inspect for shorts, detached wiring, or loose connections.

• Check the motor and verify the rotation of the driven load. Make sure it spins freely by hand in both directions without effort or assisted means.

• Check all circuit breakers.

• Make sure extra lead/bundle wires are out of the way.

MOTOR IS NOT RUNNING

If the RESCUE® PERFECTSPEED® motor isn’t running,

perform the following checks:

• Ensure that both the RESCUE® PERFECTSPEED® and User Interface have proper line voltage for the intended application.

• Check the digital read-out of the User Interface for an error code shown in the table below.

Error Code Reason Action

E1 No Communication Remove power from the RESCUE® PERFECTSPEED® motor and User Interface for at least two (2) minutes, then reconnect power and test again.

Check the communication cable between the PERFECTSPEED® motor and User Interface.

Check the continuity of communication cable (pin 1-1, pin 2-2, pin 3-4 and pin 4-3.

E2 Low Voltage This is a reading from the PERFECTSPEED® motor itself. Check voltage supply.

9. Low Voltage HVAC Control/120V AC Wiring Instructions

Low Voltage HVAC ControlFor low voltage wiring details refer to the SED design drawings.

120V AC WIRING INSTRUCTIONSIn the event that wiring may interfere with duct runs, leave slack in wiring to allow room for movement to

accommodate duct location.

Note:

HVAC Contractor to coordinate with electrician for 120V electrical outlet for condensate

pumps and air purifications units.

*Important: Advise electrical contractors to replace all equipment access panels that were

removed for wiring. Unit must be kept clean. Do not leave access door off after wiring.

For heat pump thermostat installation see the low voltage wiring included with the SED

design drawings.

At least 1.5VA is needed to operate each (power open, power close) damper. No isolation

transformer is needed if system can provide an extra 1.5VA. Otherwise, an isolation transformer

and auxiliary relay will be required.

WARNING: Before performing service or maintenance operations on a system,

turn off main power switches to the indoor unit.

10. High Voltage HVAC Control/240V AC Wiring Instructions

240V AC FOR HEAT PUMP AND AIR HANDLERSED will supply a power meter and meter base to separately monitoring of the HVAC system kWh usage.

All of the single phase 240V AC power for the HVAC system will be monitored by this sub meter.

See Figure 1 for typical 240V AC sub meter connection.

A separate 2 conductor 18 gauge wire will be run from the HVAC power sub meter to the SED Total Control panel.
