Essential Questions
• What is a sectional?
• How do I read a sectional?
• What can a sectional tell me about my location?
• How can sectionals be helpful during VFR?
What is a sectional?
• equivalent of a road map for cars; shows you where airports are, lakes, roads, power lines, etc.
• used for VFR only (there are different charts for IFR)
What does a sectional tell us?
• Airports• Airport data• Navigation Aids• Radio Communication• Airspace Information• Topographic Information• Obstructions• Miscellaneous
Airports
• Towered/Untowered• Runway surface/distance• Other airport types• Fuel available• Rotating beacon
Towered or not?
Blue-colored airports are towered or controlled.
All other colored airports are untowered, or uncontrolled.
Runway Surface/Distance
No hard surface
Hard-surfaced between 1500 and 8069 feet long
Approximate navigational aid location on field
Other Airport Types
Private
Military
Heliport ONLY
Unverified Abandoned Ultralight
Fuel Available/Rotating Beacon
fuel available – tabs show on outside of airport symbol
rotating beacon – star appears near airport symbol

Magnetic Variation
• Used for flight planning• Angle between true north and
magnetic north
MSA – Minimum Safe Altitude
• Lowest altitude MSL that you can fly without hitting any obstacles
• One inside every grid• Add 2 0’s

• What class airspace does 9A1 have?• Does 9A1 have fuel available?
Class E
Yes, there is fuel available.

• Observe the following airport data. What is the control tower frequency for Hartsfield? Hint – Hartsfield is the busiest airport in the world.
NO SVFRHARTSFIELD-JACKSON ATLANTA INTL (ATL)CT – 119.1 119.3 119.5 123.85 125.325
ATIS 119.651026 L 119 122.95
All five frequencies can be considered control tower frequencies. Why? Because each runway has its own frequency. That’s how busy Hartsfield is. Refer to your A/FD for more information.
Quiz Time!!!
• Which type of navigational aid can be found nearest to DNN?
NDB
Bonus: What type of NDB is this? NDB or NDB-DME?
