ADEA SECTION ON ORTHODONTICS Spring 2017
Message from the Councilor—Edmund Khoo
Time flies when you enjoy what you do and it is amazing how fast another year has gone by! Our section was
well represented with a variety of interesting programs and multiple poster presentations at the last ADEA
Annual Session in sunny and beautiful Long Beach, California. We had an extremely productive and well-
attended section meeting. A big congratulations to our new officers: Secretary Ahmed, Chair-elect Joana, and
Chair Wendy. We would also like to extend an extra special thank you to our outgoing Councilor Mitchell
Lipp for his unwavering dedication and enthusiasm in our section. Mitch has just completed his 2nd term as
councilor and a total of nine continuous year as an officer in section! We can only hope that there will be many
more individuals like Mitch who will be involved in ADEA as much as he is.
At the annual meeting, we had the honor and privilege of being involved and co-
sponsoring the following programs:
1: Is Virtual the New Reality in Interdisciplinary Anatomy Teaching?
Sponsors: Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Orthodontics
2: Beyond Specialty boundaries: Whom do we match? Challenges facing
evaluating postdoctoral dental candidates
Sponsors: Oral Surgery, Co-sponsors: COHAEP, COSRF, Orthodontics, Pedodontics
3: Power up your PowerPoint! – Tech Expo Sponsor : Or thodontics
Looking ahead to the next ADEA session (March 17-20, 2018, Orlando, Florida) we are
going to the future with, “Vision 2030” (the theme of the session)! Our section officers
are exploring some very exciting program possibilities that I believe will fully embrace
the theme of session. Continuing the strong relationship we have built with the AAO
SOE, our Chair, Wendy will be addressing the SOE at the Annual AAO Meeting in San
Diego, California. However, this year, our collaboration will go further with an
individual breakout session at the SOE that will allow us to bring ADEA to the SOE.
This is a huge leap for our collaboration between our section and the SOE and essential
to foster closer ties between Orthodontics and the mainstream of Dental Education.
A big kudos to the SOE leadership for being instrumental in making this happen.
On behalf of the section officers and the section as a whole, I invite you to learn more
about the ADEA Section on Orthodontics and consider getting involved. ADEA
membership is open (and free) to all dental educators via their institutions. Our group is
growing in both active members and enthusiasm. Let us not forget that ADEA is the
primary voice of dental education. If you want to be heard, ADEA is your voice.
We look forward to seeing all of you at the AAO SOE and our annual ADEA meeting
next year!

Message from the Chair—Wendy Chu, DMD, M.Sc.
In 2030, what will our profession look like? What can we do as dental educators to prepare our students to be ahead of the curve in what
promises to be a rapidly changing environment? Today, whether you have been in orthodontic education for 5 or 50 years, on behalf of the
officers in the Section on Orthodontics, we ask you to connect and engage with us, for your 2018
ADEA Annual Session—Vision 2030 in any and every capacity.
During our recent Forum, our members shared their challenges in these following areas:
Standardized core principals and competencies in pre-doctoral orthodontic education.
Effective teaching strategies in orthodontic education.
Calibration and standardization of dental faculty.
Online resources in pre-doctoral orthodontic education.
Invisalign and pre-doctoral orthodontic education—what is our role as orthodontic educators?
Sleep apnea—an opportunity for interdisciplinary and inter-professional education.
Do you have a passion or possess a wealth of knowledge in any of the above? Perhaps you know someone who could contribute to the
discussion? We would love for you to connect with us! Opportunities are available in various format including workshop, discussion
groups, seminars and poster presentations. We are looking to collaborate in programming that interests you in 2018!
Program submission deadline coming up on June 1st, 2017. For more information, go to http://www.adea.org/2018/submit/, or email us
with your thoughts and comments at [email protected].
Three years ago, with encouragements from others, I took a leap of faith and decided to get involve with the ADEA Section on
Orthodontics. I was and continued to be passionate about orthodontic education and wanted to learn from seasoned educators through the
networking opportunities that ADEA provides.
Now the opportunity is yours for the taking—The door is wide open, come on in!
We would like to thank those who joined us early at our Section meeting in Long Beach, CA. The Section wishes to express sincere gratitude to the AAO COE and the AAO SOE and ADEA for their continual support!
