RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION
3.1 Promotion of Research 3.1.1 Does the college have a research committee to monitor and address the issues of
research? If yes, what is its composition? Mention a few recommendations which have been implemented and their impact.
The Research Committee of the college has been established with a view of promoting research oriented activities on campus. The Research Committee consists of the Principal as the chairperson, a senior faculty as co-ordinator, and two faculty members and two student representatives who ensure quality research work among the student body. A few recommendations which have been carried out are: The committee encourages staff in pursuing research degrees. As a result of which a
total of 8 staff have successfully completed their Ph.Ds and 7 members are on the process of submission of their Ph.D theses. A total of 16 staff members have completed M.Phil degrees and 6 have registered to pursue M.Phil degrees.
The committee has been responsible for the completion of Minor Research Project in Economics by one faculty member. Faculty of Applied Nutrition, Microbiology and Biochemistry departments have taken up projects on Health Survey in urban slum areas of Mogalrajpuram, Kristurajpuram and Giripuram.
The department of Botany conducted live projects on propagation of Semi Arid crops using drip irrigation system for the benefit of the farmers of rural Krishna District.
The Research committee has also been instrumental in enabling students to take up two minor projects with BSR grants by departments of Chemistry and Physics. One minor U.G.C sponsored project was completed by department of Economics and another UGC project is ongoing in department of Commerce.
In addition to the above, 90 projects have been under taken by all the departments. The Chemistry department conducted a survey and created awareness on ‘Safety
Instructions for using Pesticides at Yenamalakuduru’. The committee also has encouraged students to take up research oriented projects,
socially oriented projects, action oriented projects and knowledge based projects as a part of their curriculum and one credit is allotted for it.
The committee encourages staff to publish articles in Journals (National and International) and present research papers in seminars and symposia there by exhibiting interest in furtherance of knowledge.
The committee has been instrumental in encouraging staff to take up Research Guidance, Minor and Major Research projects.
3.1.2 What is the policy of the college to promote research culture in the college?Taking into consideration the impact of research in today’s academic world the institution has given sufficient weightage to carry out research activities by providing necessary funding for Minor Research Projects conducted for the Welfare and uplift of the society.
The Policy of the college is to encourage faculty to take up research degrees and research oriented activities by providing study leave, seed money, provision of due recognition for research oriented activities and recommending faculty for State Level and National Level awards.
The projects taken up by all the departments are funded by Management and other agencies. To mention a few –

The Commerce department has taken up projects on “A Study on working capital Management, Kusalava Motors Pvt. Ltd” “Quality of work life at State Bank of Travencore” “A study on customer satisfaction at Big Bazar, Vijayawada” and “A study on Consumer satisfaction in Vijaya Dairy and Consumer Behavior at Kumar pumps”.

The Research areas taken up by the college are: Marketing, Industrial Relations, Communicative English, Adult Literacy, Mal nutrition, Prevalence of diabetes, Diagnostic tests, History of heritage sites and Political Parties, Water Analysis, and Sound Pollution. The college has total of 8 members of staff with Ph.Ds and 16 staff with M.Phil who
serve as experts in the fields of Commerce, Economics, Applied Nutrition, Physical Education, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Telugu and English. Further expertise is made available by 10 visiting faculty who assist research projects through their expertise. Suitable infrastructure such as Internet, INFLIBNET, English Language Lab, Commerce and Science Laboratories provide necessary scope to carryout research on campus.

The proactive mechanisms adopted by the college to facilitate and implement of research schemes on campus are- Provision of financial assistance to the faculty who have taken up research by
advancing fund and giving seed money to both faculty and students. The researcher is given total autonomy to utilize funds. The college co-ordinates with funding agencies to release grants on time, if not
advancements of funds are provided. Timely auditing is also provided by a recognized auditor.
3.1.5 How is interdisciplinary research promoted?∗ between/among different departments of the college and∗ collaboration with national/international institutes /industries. Interdisciplinary research is promoted on campus by encouraging departments to take
up project works which are multi dimensional and inter disciplinary in nature. Setting up of Oral Communication Practical unit by Department of English in collaboration with Department of English Salalah College of Technology, SALALAH, Sultanate of Oman and British Council (LANCO) and St. Theresa’s College, Eluru.

The department of Applied Nutrition collaborates with PSIMS to conduct research of inter disciplinary nature by involving the departments of Bio-chemistry and Microbiology on Prevalence of Diabetes in Vijayawada.
The department of Commerce collaborated with Syndicate Bank to train the students to acquire practical knowledge in banking methodologies.
The Department of Physics is doing a project on “Sound Pollution” in collaboration with A.P. Pollution Control Board, Vijayawada by final year students and A Minor Research project on “Ultrasonic Parameters of different samples of water from different wells in Machilipatnam” is done by final year students from BSR Grants.
Conducted research on water samples, water analysis by Chemistry and Microbiology Departments.
The Departments of History, Telugu and Hindi are doing a project on Historical and cultural significance of Vijayawada City.
The Department Telugu is doing a project on “Asta Vidha Nayikalu” funded by Samskruthi Chaitanya Vedika.
A Minor project by Department of Physics on Lens Making in collaboration with AV Opticals.
A Minor Inter disciplinary project on setting up Small Scale Business Units in collaboration with Jan Sikshan Sansthan was under taken by Entrepreneur Development Cell.
A Minor Project on Adult Literacy conducted by Department of Economics in collaboration with Rotary International.
The Department of Computer Science collaborates with Sai Teja Infotech and Santosh Technologies to do projects.

Three staff members availed sabbatical leave with pay from U.G.C. Though the staff are encouraged to avail the leave with pay many of the staff do not avail it as they are un-aided faculty. They guide the students in doing projects.

“Agricultural Credit by Commercial Banks” on 21-07-2006 and 22-07-2006, under the directorship of Dr.T.Vijayalakshmi.
The Department of Commerce organized a one National seminar sponsored by Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education on ‘The Role of service sector enhancing quality & Image at Indian market’ on 13-09-2010 and 14-09-2010, under the directorship of Dr.T.Rama Devi.
Arranged a two day U.G.C sponsored National Seminar on The Performance of the Micro Finance Sector in India on 11th & 12th July, 2011, under the directorship of Dr.T.Rama Devi.

Department of English conducted survey on “English Language Acquisition in Schools of Vijayawada”.
Department of Applied Nutrition, Biochemistry and Microbiology on Nutritional Anthropometry, Vaccination schedule and Infectious diseases in Pakergudem. Which enlightened them on the importance of balanced diet, vaccination and prevention of contagious diseases.
The research projects conducted by departments of Botany, Microbiology on Azolla cultivation to be used as bio fertilizers and bio pesticide are displayed to rural farming community to create awareness and introduce them to low cost and high yielding farming techniques.
Projects on Ultra Sonic parameters for different samples of water conducted jointly by Physics and Chemistry departments in addition to testing the potability of water has benefited Labbipet, Mogalraj puram, Patamata, Kristhuraja Puram areas of the city and many villages.
The projects taken up by the English Department in Voice training, Accent training in the English language lab is utilized to train school teachers and school children of Vijayawada such as V.P.S Public School, Amali Public School, B.S. Municipal School and KCPSA Public School.
The department of Commerce established Entrepreneur Development Cell to run small scale industries, such as Production and Marketing of Flower bouquets, saree embroidery, bathik printed sarees, Vermi compost, Silk worm Cocoons etc. These units are proved beneficial to local people as well as the staff and students.

Yes. The research committee of S.D.M.Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala, with Principal as the Chairperson takes care of provision of financial support to the various projects taken up by students and staff. The committee advances seed money. The percentage of staff who have availed this benefit since the past four years is about 20%.

The college is doing its best to provide meaningful academic programmes to its learners by making ‘research’ one of its thrust areas. To inculcate research culture among the students, project work was made mandatory to the final year students. The following measures have been adopted to ensure research oriented infrastructure to be available to researchers. Up gradation of the library has been undertaken with Rs.3, 33, 248.00 lakhs being
spent on Journals, books, Encyclopedias and Magazines necessary for research. Up gradation of library with LAN and INFLIBNET enabling access to e- Journals &
e- Books. Provision of reprographic facility to assist scholars. Establishment of Medicinal and Herbal garden and herbarium for research. Ph meters, conducto meters, electronic balances, Melting point apparatus, UV visible
Spectro photometer, apparatus and distilled water plants in Chemistry. UV visible spectro meter, Microtome, Spectro photometer, incubator, Nephlo meter,
B.O.D. incubator, Laminar Airflow Chamber in Biochemistry and Microbiology. Polari meter Bifilar pendulum, Melde’s apparatus, Lloyd’s Mirror, Fresnel’s Bi Prism,
Spectro Meter and Fly wheel have been added to the Physics lab (Surface tension apparatus)
Establishment of English Language Lab with 50 systems fully furnished with head phones and CAL packages.
Simulation Labs in the Physics and Electronics to promote accuracy in research programmes.
To carry out interdisciplinary research and live research projects the college has established vermi composting Plant, Mushroom cultivation plant, Azolla Cultivation, Drip Irrigation Plant, Compost Pit, Seri Culture unit, Green House, Square foot Garden, Horticulture plant, Herbal Garden, Animal House, Ornamental fish breeding tanks and Aquarium.
The college has a well established Research Committee to facilitate research. Further seed money is provided to faculty who are inclined to take up projects. Student research projects have been made an integral part of the curriculum. The college gives due recognition to staff and students who take up commendable research activities by recommending them for State awards and making special mention in college reports.

The Incubation Cell which works under the auspices of the Research committee provides information to faculty and students regarding:
Information about areas of research. Funding agencies Application forms, important dates for submission of research proposals. Generating new and innovative ideas for research.
3.3.3Does the college provide residential facilities (with computer and internet facilities)for research scholars and faculty?Accommodation is provided in the hostel. All residential staff and students have access to computer and internet facility at the Computer Centre and the library which are available on all working days between 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Research activities are made possible during these hours.

The researchers are given special provision in the library to pursue their research. The campus has well established laboratories in all the programmes and Medicinal Plants, Mushroom cultivation, Azolla cultivation unit, which provide vast scope for research oriented activities. These units have enabled improvement in Agricultural methods, setting up of Small scale business by Siddharthian entrepreneurs.

responsibilities? List the major extension and outreach programmes which have created an impact on students’ campus experience.At the Boards of Studies and the Departmental level meetings, the department plans its outreach programmes. The feedback derived from alumnae, parents, employees and members of society, the various extension activities are decided at the beginning of the academic year based on the needs of the society. The extension programmes are scheduled in such a way that there is no clash with other academic and co-curricular activities. Major extension and outreach programmes:1. The college actively promotes extension services to suit community needs. The
most notable and laudable gesture by the staff that hit the headlines is adoption of children from AIDS hit families. 20 lecturers of the college adopted children from HIV/AIDS affected families. Each lecturer contributes money every year to meet the expenditure incurred to purchase of their school uniforms, bags and stationery. In addition to that, an amount of Rs.10,000/- contributed by the staff is deposited in the bank and it is utilized to provide higher education to them. The staff and students share their meals with them to avoid discrimination against HIV affected families.
2. The teaching faculty members encourage Handloom weavers of Pochampalli, Mangalagiri, Battiprolu, Yarlagadda etc by wearing handloom sarees once a week.

Adopted an Orphanage home for Street children ‘Ammavadi’, Boyapati Sivaramakrishnaiah Municipal High School, RCM aided Elementary School other orphanages and slums to provide them with basic necessities and free education to students.
They also organized Kalayika and interviewed the victims of domestic violence. To abolish superstitious belief and inculcate scientific attitude among the students
arranged Magic Show by renowned magician Sri. Kranthikar to explain the concept of Banamathi, Black Magic and small tricks played in villages.
To protect Ozone layer a “Cycle Rally” was organized with placards and paintings, conducted elocution, essay writing competitions and Bio-fashion show, formed human chain and took an oath, Say No to Plastic programmes, Pollution check-up camps and exhibited Oscar awarded movie “wall-e”.
In collaboration with Jana Vignanavedika conducted a rally on “National Science Day” to convey the message that “Science should be used for the constructive purpose and not for the destruction”.
The department of Physics offers consultancy services to Municipal Corporation High School to teach theory and practicals to V to X classes and also donated practical equipment and donated money, clothes and provisions to flood affected people of Ramalingeswara Nagar.
Department of Zoology Offers consultancy to Boyapati Siva Ramakrishnaiah Municipal School,
Mogalrajpuram. Distributed pamphlets at Rythu Bazar on “AIDS Awareness”. On the eve of Ozone Protection Day bicycle rally was organized.
Department of Commerce: To promote entrepreneur and marketing skills among the students, the department
maintains FAIR, a co-operative stores to provide essential home needs to staff and students.
The department established Entrepreneur Development Cell on the campus to train them on various self-employment skills.
Distributed towels, bed sheets, provisions and stationery to orphans at Vasavya Pillala Gramam, Vemavaram, Krishna Dt.
Department of Economics: Adult Literacy Programme was organized to supporting staff of our college and urban

Department of Political Science: Conducted Cookery and Painting classes to house wives and young girls in

Organized a rally from college to Benz Circle to create awareness among the Civilians of Vijayawada regarding pollution caused by crackers and distributed pamphlets suggesting the ways to celebrate Diwali without causing air and noise pollution.
To create awareness among civilians about conservation of energy resources a rally was conducted in association with NEDCAP.

The IQAC of the college in collaboration with Jan Sikshan Sansthan carried out a programme on ‘Women Empowerment’ by training women in Bathik printing, Embroidery, Fabric paintings and Home Crafts through EDC programme.
The department of Computer Science carried out computer literacy programme for housewives.
The Science, English, Economics and History faculty extend their training to school children belonging to Z.P. Schools where there is a dearth of teachers. The learners were given the advantage of using the collegiate infrastructure in the learning process.
The IQAC conducted Mother and Child Medical camp at Gunadala in collaboration with Dr Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences, Chinaoutpally.
The department of English contributed Rs.10,000/- towards purchase of Physiotherapy kits for differently abled students.
Cycle Safari Unit: Every Friday students motivate people to start cycling by pedaling their way to
selected residential colonies in the college vicinity. Holding placards that speak about the several advantages of cycling they motivate the people to use cycles. The Girls are the members of ‘Safari unit’ set up in the college which promotes the several benefits of this humble mode of transport which ensures good health by this eco-friendly mode of transport. Municipal Commissioner also participated in one of the rallies organized by the students and appealed to the people to observe Fridays as cycling day.
3.6.2.How does the college promote college-neighborhood network and student engagement, contributing to holistic development of students and sustained community development?Through the extension activities taken up by each department in serving society, the college follows its Mission of creating “Service Oriented Women Leaders”. Major extension activities are taken up by NO MORE TEARS, a forum for Social Activities which oversees these activities.
The NO MORE TEARS takes care that All students are oriented to their duty to society through seminars, movies and
motivational talks. The IQAC also takes charge of identifying places & people who need assistance
through networking activities. The Departments are then oriented to carryout sustained programmes towards
community development.
NO MORE TEARS (A forum for social activities) Inauguration of the forum for social activities “No More Tears” was held on 27 th Jan,
2009. Chief guests of the function are Sri Velamati Manohara Prasad ( Retd. IAS), Secretary, Centre for development and research of primary schools & Smt V. Rama Devi, Social Worker. All the extension activities of the college are done under this forum.
By participating in these extension activities students are exposed to the needs of socially and economically marginalized people. By serving them they find meaning to

Department of Applied Nutrition: On the occasion of Republic day distributed biscuits, fruits to Girls institute for
rehabilitation and learning. Distributed note books and stationery at Ankita, a home for orphan girls on 4-2-2012. Donated provisions for one day menu at old age home in Kanuru on 6-2-2012. Applied Nutrition, Bio-Chemistry and Microbiology organized a free medical camp for
pregnant, lactating women and children in collaboration with Urban Herbal Centre PSIMS (Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences), Chinnaoutpally. During the camp they conducted free medical checkup, diagnostic tests, distributed medicines and Nutrition Kits. Vaccinate and investigate 500 members every year in urban slum areas.
Department of Chemistry: Women’s Cell organized Kalayika and interviewed the victims of domestic violence
along with the student members of Women’s cell. Adopted “Ammavadi” an orphanage and rendering their services to the destitutes.
They donated notebooks, pens, files and provisions worth of Rs. 9000/-. At Ammavadi an orphanage, the students conducted competitions for the inmates and

Department of Economics: On the occasion of Human Rights day on 10th Dec, 2009, III B.A students interacted
with the street children at ‘Arunodayam’ Street Children rehabilitation centre, Vijayawada and presented papers explaining the reasons and conditions of street children. They also donated blankets, clothes, sweaters and towels to the children.

disadvantaged strata of the society. 3.6.3How does the college promote the participation of the students and faculty in
extension activities including participation in NSS, NCC, YRC and other National/International agencies?
All students are oriented to participate in society building and nation building activities at the two week orientation programme organized at the entry level of all graduates. Students are expected to enroll as active participants of NSS, NCC, YRC Eco-Club, Cultural, and games and sports, as this could earn them additional credits. Students are oriented on the benefits of these extra-curricular activities and the physical and psychological benefits they would reap from them other than the respect and recognition they would earn from their peers.
N.S.S There are two active units of N.S.S. with 300 volunteers who actively participate in societal national building activities. A four pronged action oriented strategy is deployed by these units. They being a. Rehabiltatory service oriented measures in slums, villages, catastrophe torn areas
etc. b. Orientation of public on better life styles through rallies and peace marches. c. Training programme to select disadvantaged groups such as literacy programmes

pledged their eyes to Swetcha Gora Eye Bank. Conducted Mega Rally on importance of Eye donation in collaboration with Swetcha

ECO-CLUB: The Siddhartha Mahila Eco-club is a vibrant club with a mission to transform the city
into eco-friendly city. The major activities under taken:
Conduct of Major surveys on Pollution Levels in the City and measures to reduce pollution. The club has won many awards Water Management drives in rural and urban Krishna district. Power Management drives in the city of Vijayawada. Nomenclature of plants on campus in collaboration with department of Botany. Transformation of campus into Plastic free zone. Participation in rallies and marches to control plastic usage. Conduct of Eco-friendly festivals (Holi and Vinyaka chathurdi), Eco-friendly
fashion shows, Exhibitions and preparation of Eco-friendly greeting cards to orient youth in Eco-friendly measures.
The Eco-Club of our college has become partner of Green Mission initiated by Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. Every Saturday is observed as the Green Day in the city to encourage people to maintain hygiene, clean environment and growing plantations. The Club collaborates with District Youth Welfare Department, Chief Medical Officer of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, Horticulture department and NGOs in this Green Mission.

The college takes up extensive social surveys which are interdepartmental and interdisciplinary in kind. The purpose of these surveys is to make students active participants in societal issues and problems. Students record data, interview target groups, process data and provide vital feedback on a number of processing issues that people face in the modern world. Some of the major surveys that have been shouldered service in the past few years need mention:
Organized health survey on Nutrient in take level, Nutritional deficiency disorders in slum areas.
A Mega Survey was conducted in Vijayawada City to assess levels of pollution and its impact on civic life (2010).

The college works in collaboration with a number of institutions to carryout outreach programmes.
- Urban Health Centre, Vijayawada to conduct medical camps and surveys. - PSIMS to conduct diagnostic tests for rural women. Red Cross Club, Rotary, Inner Wheel and Lions Club to conduct blood donation and
rehabilitatory programmes. Jan Sikshan Sansthan, DRDA and ICDS, Vijayawada, to conduct training
programmes in business skills. 3.6.8 Does the College have a mechanism to track the students’ involvement in various
social movements / activities which promote citizenship roles?The college involves the NSS Programme Officers to keep track of the activities
oriented towards societal uplift that students are involved. The ward teacher maintains a record of the number of community development activities that a student is actively involved in. - The number of rallies, social movements against female foeticide and infanticide,
women trafficking and harassment, dowry movements, child labour, campaigning against early marriages, ragging, eve teasing and alcoholism are noted by the N.S.S. Programme Officers. Movements promoting gender equity and student participation are also noted. Special prizes are awarded to best N.S.S. Volunteer and best students who are socially oriented.

the involvement of the community. The Rotary Club, Lions Club and Women’s Cell are mobilized to carry out,

Doctors are encouraged to conduct free medical camps at targeted urban slums of Vijayawada – Pakirgudem, Kristurajapuram, Mogalrajpuram, Giripuram etc.
Camps are conducted involving the elite to contribute to the homes of mentally challenged such as Sai Prema, Prema Nivas and Old age home “Amma” and Nirmal Hruday Bhavan”.
Lawyers are involved to provide legal counseling to slum dwellers. Involvement of local villages to carryout literacy drives to educate the illiterate. Involvement of successful farmers in developing organic farming techniques as
alternatives to chemical fertilizers. These farmers provide the technical know-how in the development, Pisciculture, Prawn culture, Mushroom cultivation, vermi composting etc.
Applied Nutrition conducted Nutrition awareness programmes in collaboration with Inner Wheel Club, explained diet plan for different diseases in collaboration with Railway Hospital and low cost balanced diet for slum dwellers in collaboration with Anganwadi centre of ICDS.

3.7 Collaboration 3.7.1How has the college’s collaboration with other agencies impacted the visibility,
identity and diversity of activities on the campus? To what extent has the college benefitted academically and financially because of collaborations?The college collaborates with a number of agencies in order to conduct welfare activities, extension activities, job training for students, sharing of expertise, surveys, rehabilitary measures, constructive work etc. These collaborations have made the educational process vibrant and meaningful as they provide training which is practical, job-oriented and service oriented. Siddharthian students’ active participation in projects, case studies, surveys and
collaborative activities is a well known feature in many villages. The activities of Siddhartha students make headlines in all news papers (National &
Local) of the city, thereby creating great visibility and publicity. Live TV Coverage of such activities is a common aspect of collegiate life.
The collaborative efforts with industries, hospitals and companies, make education challenging and vibrant adding to the variety of diverse educational processes such as talks by visiting experts, fairs set up by agencies, training camps, training activities at the Small Scale Business Unit. All this gives a special identity to the college making it a place brimming with activities.
Collaborations have helped to set up a number of Entrepreneur Development courses such as courses for women in saree embroidery, saree printing, bathik printing, flower arrangements, candle making, Vermi composting etc thereby bringing in adequate revenue to conduct these courses. Surveys have helped students to gain deeper insight into research methodology and other latest aspects of their subjects.
The department of Commerce started Entrepreneur Development Cell in collaboration with Jan Sikshan Sansthan to promote self employment.
The department of Chemistry trained the housewives in and around the college on preparation of home needs like surf, phenyl and soap oil.
