Some equations in rectangular form are easier to graph in polar form, and some equations in polar form may be easier to graph in rectangular form.

To graph equations in polar form on the polar coordinate system, the most basic method is to find a bunch of ordered pairs (r, θ ) and plot points.

EX: Make a table of ordered pairs for r = 4cos(3θ ), and then graph the equation by plotting points.

A more advanced method of graphing polar equations by hand is to first graph the equation in an rθ rectangular coordinate system, and then translate this information onto a polar coordinate system.

We can use the TI84 to make a table of ordered pairs, but we must first put the calculator in polar mode.

Of course, the graphing calculator can graph the equation as well.
