• On Wednesday, 31 October 2012 the SA Sport Awards Outreach Program focused on a School Sport held at Botshelo Sport Centre in Diepsloot at SunCares Sports Academy.

• The outreach brought together sports icons and young kids to facilitate mentoring and coaching and was endorsed for its strong alignment with the objectives of the School Sports Framework developed by the departments of Sport & Recreation and Basic Education.

“We are tremendously grateful for all great work undertaken by Tsogo Sun SunCares program alongside Walter Minaar and Malcolm Larsen of the Equina Rugby Club for

pioneering this initiative and providing the facilities necessary to nurture sporting development in previously disadvantaged communities, while keeping with the Minister of Sport & Recreation, Fikile Mbalula’s desire to get back to the grass roots of sports.”

• Kukkiwon, also known as World Taekwondo Headquarters, arrived in South Africa on 2 November 2012 from Seoul, to perform the Taekwondo demonstration at the SA Sports Awards 2012.

• Taekwondo Demonstration by the Kukkiwon Team was a major milestone for the sports and cultural exchange between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of South Africa.

• The team consisted of 20 members, led by Captain Han Kook Sun. This team is one of three Taekwondo demonstration teams managed by Kukkiwon and indeed the blew everybody away with their top class acrobatic Taekwondo movement.

• The demonstration contributed to the growing prevalence and development of Taekwondo in South Africa and has surely also triggered opportunities for sports exchange and collaboration between South Korea and South Africa. .

ANDREW MLANGENI GOLF CHALLENGEIn the morning of Friday 2 November 2012, the Minister kick-started the Andrew Mlangeni Golf Challenge at the Serengeti Golf Estate.

A number of development golf players were invited to play with the professional golf players and they were later joined by recreational players, including the Sport Awards sponsors.

The program served as a platform to showcase talent among the development players from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and expose them to professional players who can possibly serve their mentors and role models.

The program culminated into the Andrew Mlangeni Legends Green Jacket Dinner the Minister announced a financial contribution of R175 000.00 towards the Soweto Golf Development Club raised through the Golf Challenge.

The Minister indicated that this money is intended to assist the with equipment and golf paraphernalia and further expressed confidence that in the not too distant future the programme will have developed top golf professionals coming out of this Chapter.

South African Sport Awards 2012 on 4 November 2012

The main event for the South African Sport Awards 2012 was held in the evening of 4 November 2012 at Sandton Convention Centre. This marked the apex of the entire Sport Awards program and needless to mention and once more, no effort no creative brain was spared to ensure its world-class delivery!

Following a recommendation by the Adjudication Panel, the Minister approved that more than three nominees should be considered in certain categories. This was mainly due to the effect of the Olympic year on the pool of talent and excellence that had to be considered!

A much improved performance was noted in 2012 with regard to the actual presence of all the category winners at the Sport Awards Gala Dinner. All the category winners were present or had pre-arranged representatives to receive their Awards on their behalf.

All the nominees were impeccably dressed in black suits by Carducci and their look was truly befitting of the stature of the prestigious event the Awards have grown to be.

NOMINEES FOR SPORT STARS OF THE YEAR 2012In line with the Rulebook, the Sport Star of the year was voted by the Public through an SMS line established solely for this purpose.

This competition saw seven Sport Personalities nominated by the Adjudication Panel battle it out for the title Sport Star of Year.

In the process the SMS line was also used to raise funds which were later donated to charity by the Minister as legacy of the SA Sport Awards 2012

This SMS competition was publicised both through print media and Television but with enough time, the impact could have really been much more better!

SPORT STAR OF THE YEAR 2012 Olympic gold medallist Chad le Clos was crowned sports star of the year after the 20-year old clinched the highest votes on the public vote line ahead of the other six nominees, (1) Hashim Amla, (2) Caster Semenya, (3) Oscar Pistorius, (4) Siyabonga Nomvete, (5) Vernon Philander and (6) Natalie du Toit
