INITIAL ASSESSMENT All students need some form of initial assessment on starting or before starting their course. Initial assessment should establish the following: • approximate level of previous learning
• previous experience
• reasons for learning
• preferred learning style/activities
• existing skills
• health and fitness issues -if appropriate
This information should be used to help plan/adapt the scheme of work and identify appropriate learning outcomes for the group or the individual. Although best practice would mean learners should be advised of their starting point and course suitability before enrolment, where this is not possible this needs to be done during the first week or two of the course. The following examples are to help you develop appropriate initial assessment for your group. However there is no right or wrong way - it needs to be suitable for your teaching and your class. All sorts of issues will make a difference including the: • number of repeat learners
• type of teaching –workshops/practical/projects or classroom teaching
• length of course
• level of course etc
The important thing is that you use the information to improve the planning and the learning experience for your students.

Examples of Initial Assessment INITIAL ASSESSMENT – MODERN LANGUAGES All language tutors will carry out Initial Assessment which must be recorded. In addition to the general IA form some form of linguistic assessment is also required to establish the starting point for individual learners. This need not be a formal ‘test’ but a simple recording by the tutor of the learners’ ability. For example learners could be given an appropriate ice-breaking activity to carry out in pairs or small groups while the tutor notes down information on individuals. See example below where ticks are used to denote the level of proficiency in a particular area. There is also space for additional notes on each individual. A written task should be given within the first few weeks. The content will depend on the level of the learners (e.g., write down personal information about themselves, family, hobbies etc, their motivation for attending the class, what they did during the summer, planning for the weekend etc.) This allows the tutor to start to get to know about each learner’s linguistic knowledge as well as their individual learning goals. The purpose of the Initial Assessment of learners is to inform the subsequent development of the course, not only in terms of the Scheme of Work for the whole group, but also with regard to the specific requirements of the individuals within the group.

Some examples of ice-breaking activities: In the target language: Exchange personal information with a neighbour, then introduce that person to the group. Identify three things you have in common and three things that are different. Go round the class asking as many people as possible for information using pre- prepared handout. (Who has lived abroad? Can play a musical instrument? Likes sport? Etc,) A class for beginners would clearly have to be done in English, but some form of ice-breaking activity is important at the start of any course. The tutor then has the opportunity to discreetly make notes on individuals to help with future course planning.
