MFD DRIVE SHAFT

Removal

STEP 1

96RS28A

Park the tractor on a hard, level surface. Put thetransmission shift lever in PARK. Turn off the engineand remove the key. Place blocks in front of andbehind the rear wheels.

NOTE: The suspended MFD axle is shown in thefollowing procedure. The same procedure will beused for the standard MFD axle and the SuperSteeraxle, except as noted.

STEP 2

RD02H172

Mark the position of the sleeve on the drive shaftprotector. Remove the two plastic dr ive shaftprotector pins and discard. Slide the drive shaftsleeve toward the transmission.

STEP 3

RD02H173

Mark the alignment of the pinion yoke and universaljoint for reassembly. Support the drive shaft andremove the four drive shaft to pinion yoke retainingbolts. Remove the drive shaft at the front axle. Checkthe universal joint for damage or wear. Replace, ifnecessary, by removing the four universal joint todrive shaft retaining bolts.

STEP 4

RD02H174

Slide the drive shaft protector from the MFD driveshaft.

STEP 5

RD02H167

RD02H168

Install the drive shaft. Hand tighten two of the driveshaft to pinion yoke retaining bolts (1) to hold thedrive shaft in place. Mark the alignment of thetransmission yoke and the universal joint forassembly. Properly support the drive shaft. Use along extension to remove the four drive shaft totransmission yoke retaining bolts. Note the positionof the directional arrow decal on the drive shaft.Remove the suspended MFD drive shaft.

NOTE: Installation of the drive shaft and use of along extension to remove the four drive shaft totransmission yoke retaining bolts is only required onthe suspended MFD axle. This procedure is notneeded for standard MFD or SuperSteer drive shaftremoval.

STEP 6

RD02H191

Place the drive shaft (1) on V blocks (2). Position adial indicator (3), attached to a magnetic base, on theoutside diameter of the drive shaft. Turn the driveshaft one complete turn to check for straightness.Replace the drive shaft, if necessary.

STEP 7

RD02H175

Drain the oil from the MFD suspended axle. Makealignment marks on the pinion yoke and differentialhousing. Remove and discard the pinion yoke nut(1). Remove the pinion washer (2). Remove andinspect the MFD pinion yoke and deflector fordamage or wear. Replace the pinion yoke anddeflector if necessary. Remove the MFD pinion sealwith a puller. Refer to the information in this manualfor the removal procedure.

Remove the plug and drain the transmission oil fromthe speed transmission into a suitable, cleancontainer.

STEP 9

RD02H163

Place alignment marks on the transmission yoke andthe bearing cage (1). Remove the transmission yokeretaining bolt (2) and the retaining washer (3).Remove the sh ims and O-r ing. Remove thetransmission yoke with deflector and inspect fordamage or wear. Replace the transmission yoke, ifnecessary. Use a puller to remove the yoke seal fromthe bearing cage. Refer to the information in thismanual for the procedure.

NOTE: The transmission yoke seal can be replacedwithout MFD output shaft removal.

Installation

STEP 10

RD02H163

Install a new oil seal in the transmission bearing cage(1). The seal must be installed 8.5mm (0.335 inch)below the surface of the bearing cage. Lubricate theinner diameter of the seal with clean hydraulic oil.Use a suitable seal installer to install the seal. Usethe alignment marks from the disassembly procedureto install the transmission yoke. Install the O-ring,shims, retaining washer (2), and the bolt (3). Refer tothe information in this manual for the procedure.Tighten the bolt to a torque of 252 to 280 Nm (186 to206 lb ft).

STEP 11

91S17

Install the speed transmission drain plug and fill thetransmission.

STEP 12

RD02H175

Lubricate the inner diameter of a new pinion seal withgear oil. Install the seal using FNH00410 Pinion SealInstaller. If a new yoke dust shield is required, useCAS2596 Yoke Dust Shield Installer with FNH00072Handle to install the shield. Refer to the informationin this manual for the procedure. Use the alignmentmarks made during disassembly to install the pinionyoke into the differential housing. Install the pinionwasher and a new pinion nut. Tighten the nut to atorque of 326 to 406 Nm (240 to 300 lb ft).

STEP 13

RD02H167

RD02H168

Check the position of the directional arrow decal onthe drive shaft. Properly support the drive shaft.Position the drive shaft universal joints on the pinionyoke and the transmission yoke using the alignmentmarks made during diassembly. Install the driveshaft. Hand tighten two of the drive shaft to pinionyoke retaining bolts (1) to hold the drive shaft inplace. Use a long extension (2) to install the fourdrive shaft to transmission yoke retaining bolts.Tighten the bolts to a torque of 58 to 64 Nm (43 to 47lb ft). Install and tighten the MFD axle drain plug.Remove the MFD axle level plug. Fill the axle to theproper level with gear oil, and limited slip additive, ifequipped. Refer to specifications in this section forthe capacity of the specific MFD axle.

NOTE: Installation of the drive shaft and use of along extension to install the four drive shaft totransmission yoke retaining bolts is only required onthe suspended MFD axle. This procedure is notneeded for standard MFD or SuperSteer drive shaftinstallation.

NOTE: When installing the drive shaft, make surethe mating sufaces of the drive shaft universal jointand yoke are free of paint, burrs, and chips. Use arubber mallet to lightly tap the outside edge of the topbearing end cap to position it into the keyway of theyoke. Do not use the bolts to pull the bearing endcaps into the yoke keyway.

STEP 14

RD02H174

Remove the two hand tightened drive shaft to pinionyoke bolts. Slide the drive shaft protector on the MFDdrive shaft.

STEP 15

RD02H173

Properly support the drive shaft. Make sure theuniversal joint and the pinion yoke position marks arealigned. Install the four drive shaft to pinion yokeretaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 58 to64 Nm (43 to 47 lb ft).
