Secret Window Analysis To begin the opening scene there is a fade in to view the main characters car, to which this fades into the roll over were the camera is ‘skimming’ the sea. This camera technique is more commonly known as an establishing shot with a zoom in combined, to give the audience an idea of the setting but to zoom in the situation of the main character. I feel that this is trying to indicate Mort’s thoughts since it’s a psychological thriller and it then gives the audience a feeling that Mort is thinking. But when the camera zoom finally arrives at the main character, we see him sleeping; this is making the audience think. This film is all about a writer (Mort) and because I have seen this film multiple times, it gave me the idea that the establishing shot maybe is to inspires the writer. To aid the camera shots, there is also piano music assisting the scenes to give the scene more of a creepy but emotional edge. This music creates an emotional side for me as I am anticipating the next scene to where his wife divorces him. Within the opening credits after the camera has zoomed up on to him, it says ‘6 Month Later’. This will either make people who have previously watched the film understand more, or make people who haven’t seen the film make them watch more. This music continues throughout the opening credits and gives the audience a sinister feeling. As recognized from my mind map of Thrillers, this opening scene follows the typical conventions of a psychological thriller, I know this as the mise en scene of the opening credits, is a ran down home in a forest, this gives the idea that this house isn’t central, so therefore would make the audience think that he main character (Mort) is a lonely venerable character, and this is a another convention a psychological thriller. When the zoom up is taking place the camera shows the audience certain objects such as Laptop and mirror and then other typical household objects. These are red herrings and have a significant meaning later on in the film to both Mort and the audience. To the end of the opening credits scene, the camera flies from the balcony to the main living room, this is a mechanical shot, as there is no support to hold the camera for what the audience can see, so this makes me think this. Al so later on in that scene the camera ‘goes through the mirror, the audience can see the mirror frame, and then the camera goes through it to show another camera frame of the main character. This is a straight shot, but is a reflective and perspective. The music is continuous all the way through the scene and is repetitive this gives it a more weird edge to the end.
