Some street children (nicknamed ‘wandering swallows’) manage to flee from North Korea. Jong-Cheol was 11 when he escaped to China. He came to the attention of Open Doors who gave him food and shelter and housed him with a Christian family.

But one day he was with some other North Korean children outside a hotel. They were caught and taken back to North Korea where they were interrogated and beaten. The guards asked the children if they had become Christians in China. Jong-Cheol didn’t deny it.

He didn’t survive. He didn’t survive.

When Yusuf and his family received death threats addressed to ‘Christian dogs’, they got packing right away. Leah, his nine-year-old daughter, insisted that she take her children’s Bible. “It’s the only thing I really want to take with me. I’d rather take this than my dollies!”

She is on the streets because she was born into a Christian family, and as Christians are the lowest of the low in Pakistan, that means she was born into poverty, too.

Xiao Mingin china

When Xiao Ming was eight years old, he and his mother had to leave China in a hurry. For years his mother never told him why.

Eventually she revealed the truth. His father had been arrested for doing church work. For the first five years he was imprisoned. Once he was released, he spent the next three years helping earthquake victims.

Xiao Ming was 16 years old when they finally met. They were like strangers to one another. But thanks to the intervention of Open Doors, father and son are building a much better relationship, working together for the Lord.

Mustafa and his wife have two sons. They’re both called Amir. That’s because Amir has to live a double life. At home he is free to love Jesus, at school he has to keep it quiet. His friends want him to go to the mosque, but because he refuses, they shun him.

In addition, his grandparents are Muslims and have turned against their son, even causing the police to arrest him on one occasion. The incident traumatised Amir, who was only three at the time.

The stress of being a secret believer has taken its toll on Amir. Thankfully, Open Doors has been able to provide him with trauma therapy. Perhaps one day both Amirs will become one.Perhaps one day both Amirs will become one.

Yati was only eight when she left school. She scavenged on the city streets and dumps to support her family who were always on the move. Some nights they slept in a cart.

When her father died, they were left penniless and homeless, but because they had become Christians, none of their relatives would shelter them. But Open Doors found them space in a safe house. Yati took in laundry to help pay the bills.

Now Yati, 15, is training at a sewing school. She says, “I dream of becoming a Sunday School teacher some day.”

Gabar lived in the town of Tafawa Balewa. He liked to play football with the other children in his village. They loved to play and to sing and dance. But one night, the dancing stopped.

On 6 August 2010, police came to arrest Christians in Gabar’s town. When other Christians came to ask why they were being arrested, the police opened fire.

Gabar’s friend described what happened. “My friend, his name is Gabar, the bullets hit him in the stomach. He fell on the ground. Blood was everywhere, all over his body.”

Gabar died of his injuries a day later. He was only 13.
