DISCUSSION GUIDE:

1. How does Jack get the information he needs from the GPF? What does GPF stand for and how did Jack begin working for them?

2. What do you think is the most important thing to know about Jack? Would you want to be friends with Jack? Why?

3. What has been stolen at the American Museum of Natural History? Why is it so important?

4. What does Jack do to discover who stole the missing object? How many steps does it take him to get to the thief?

5. What does Jack come face to face with at Thomas Eberly’s house? Why doesn’t it detect them? Where does it go next? How would you feel in this situation? Would you be willing to chase after it or not?

6. What does Jack use the virtual protection camera for on this mission? Which of Jack’s gadgets would you most like to use? How would you use it? Which gadget is the most important for protecting others?

7. Would you be willing to put yourself in harm’s way to save a stranger? Does this make Jack a hero? What are the most important qualities of a hero?

8. Jack is certainly able to think clearly in the face of danger. Are you? How do you concentrate when you’re under pressure? How does Jack?

9. What famous spots in New York City does the allosaurus prey upon for dinner? Where in NYC would you most like to visit?

10. Describe how Jack manages to give the allosaurus the reversal serum. In the end, what happens to Thomas and Jack?

PROJECTS ACROSS THE CURRICULUM:

Math:

Research the height and weight of four different animals and include the allosaurus as one of them. Then, graph and discuss the results.

Geography:

Create a pamphlet, poster or PowerPoint presentation on New York City. Find at least ten facts and four destinations that you’d like to visit within the city.

Science:

In small groups, research theories on how the dinosaurs became extinct. Create a diorama or other type of three-dimensional scene depicting one of the theories.

Art:

Design a new gadget or tool that Jack can use on his next adventure. Create a prototype out of found objects in your house or using clay. Write a detailed description of this gadget’s uses.

Language Arts:

Write an additional chapter based at another New York City landmark between Jack and the allosaurus. Use the book as a mentor text to create a scene which is action-packed and full of interesting details and dialogue!
