For PreparationAt Christmas we celebrate and give thanks for the incarnation (becoming flesh)of Christ, the second person of the Trinity. This doctrine was in much dispute inthe first centuries of the church and many of the great creeds of the early churchwere written to be as explicit as possible regarding what the church believedabout Christ. One of the most prominent (but now less familiar) of these creeds,was The Creed of Athanasius. The first part of this creed was about the doctrineof the Trinity, but the second part (quoted below in parts 29-41) was about Christ.Please ponder these words as you prepare for worship.

29. Furthermore it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believerightly the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

30. For the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord JesusChrist, the Son of God, is God and man.

31. God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds;and man of substance of His mother, born in the world.

32. Perfect God and perfect man, of a reasonable soul and human fleshsubsisting.

33. Equal to the Father as touching His Godhead, and inferior to the Fatheras touching His manhood.

34. Who, although He is God and man, yet He is not two, but one Christ.35. One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh, but by taking of that

manhood into God.36. One altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person.37. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one

Christ;38. Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third

day from the dead;39. He ascended into heaven, He sits on the right hand of the Father, God,

Almighty;40. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.41. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies;

Confession of Faith

Leader: Christian, in whom do you believe?

All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,Creator of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,born of the Virgin Mary,suffered under Pontius Pilate,was crucified, died, and was buried.The third day He arose again from the dead.He ascended into heaven and sits at the righthand of God the Father Almighty, whence Heshall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,the holy universal church,the communion of saints,the forgiveness of sins,the resurrection of the body,and life everlasting. Amen

Words of Institution– Matthew 26:26—29Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing itbroke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is mybody.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave itto them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of thecovenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Itell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that daywhen I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.”

Trinity Institute for Christian Growth

Adult Sunday School Series: Living as "Engaged Exiles" (1 Peter, Continued)There's much talk lately in Christian circles about being "Salt & Light" about"speaking into culture, but not accommodating culture," being "of the world, but notof it." What does this mean at a practical everyday level? What does that look likein our neighborhoods, our workplace and our schools? Peter's first letter to somefirst century Christians answers those same questions, while giving Christiansconfidence and assurance when trials come. Join us for a Sunday School study ofthis amazing letter while we seek answers to these questions!
