PROGRAM INFORMATIONENROLLMENT: Students can start their program in either September or February, for a minimum of one semester (5 months).
ONLINE APPLICATION: No application fee and space permitting, you can choose your school.
SECONDARY SCHOOLS: All secondary schools are grade 8-12.
SEMESTER SYSTEM: All secondary schools run on the semester system, except for grade 8-10 at Johnston Heights, and grade 8-9 at Panorama Ridge and Salish (linear – 8 full year courses).
SEMESTERS:• September to January – students complete 4 courses• February to June – students complete 4 courses
HOLIDAYS: The school year has two holiday breaks • Two weeks in the winter (late December/early January) • Two weeks in the spring (mid-late March)• There are no classes on statutory holidays (Easter, Thanksgiving, etc.) and on teacher professional development days.
SCHOOL HOURS: Classes run approximately 8:30 am - 3:00 pm with a 40 minute lunch break.
LUNCH: Students can bring their lunch from home, or purchase food in the school cafeteria.
ASSESSMENT: Students are assessed upon arrival and then depending on their goals and abilities, are scheduled into appropriate levels of ELL and academic/elective courses.
STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICESENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING (ESL OR ELL): English language learning support is available at all schools.
ORIENTATION: One week before the semester starts, students attend a district-wide orientation day. This helps introduce international students to Surrey Schools and prepare them for academic and social success.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COORDINATORS: Dedicated teachers assist with academic advising and ELL support. They monitor attendance and academic achievement, and organize exciting activities and events for international students at each school.
MULTI-CULTURAL WORKERS: Assist students in their first language, attend school meetings, help with student assessments and provide translation for families.
SUMMER SCHOOL: One of the largest academic summer school programs in BC. International students can take full credit courses at an additional fee to support or fast track their learning.
POST-SECONDARY FAIR: The International Student Program offers an annual post-secondary fair for international students with over 30 different universities and colleges across Canada represented.
PARENT PROGRAM: A free twice-a-week English language program for parents of international students. This helps parents develop their English language skills, learn about life in Canada and better understand how to support their child's learning.
