PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Year 12 have completed their Half Yearly exams this week. Hopefully the advice given by Mr Johnston at our study tips evening has been implemented, and the exams will provide good feedback to students on how they are travelling in the Higher School Certificate.

REWARDS DAY

As part of our student welfare program we hold a Rewards Day each term to congratulate students who have done the right thing all term. Students who demonstrate school values such as persistence, respect for peers, being organised for learning and following school rules join in the activities on the last day of term. Students who have struggled to do this attend normal classes, and get a clean slate next term to participate in activities. This week secondary students have introduced a new activity to Rewards Day, mobile laser tag. It looks like great fun and I can’t wait to see how students respond to it.

Next term the Student Representative Council will implement some changes to the Rewards Day criteria to promote the wearing of school uniform.

SEXTING

Sexting is a modern phenomenon, mostly amongst teenage girls, and involves sending naked images often to boyfriends via mobile phones. As you can imagine with mobile phones, the internet and Facebook once these images have been sent they cannot be retrieved and take on a life of their own, often at the detriment of the sender. In the first week back next term our Police Liaison Officer will run a series of workshops for secondary students around sexting and cyberbullying. Please take the opportunity to discuss these issues with your child following the workshop. If you would like further information about these issues check out Cybersmart resources for parents at http://www.cybersmart.gov.au.

ADDITIONAL SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY

The Department has scheduled a second School Development Day in Term 2. All schools across

On Tuesday our school will focus on Aboriginal education and we invite all interested parents to join us for the workshops which are aimed at developing cultural understanding.

FRUIT BREAK

We are very pleased to see so many students enjoying fruit break on the Primary Campus. I have been visiting classrooms and speaking with students about fruit break and it’s great to see a wide variety of fruit and vegetables being eaten during this quick break time in the morning.

I have seen students enjoying watermelon, apples, grapes, strawberries, bananas, celery, carrot sticks, oranges and even kiwi fruit. Students have been discussing the benefits of healthy eating and how fruit break gives them a nice natural boost of energy in the morning. Thank you to all the parents for supporting the fruit break program and supplying fresh fruit or veggies each day. We look forward to seeing more next term!

VISITING SCHOOL GROUNDS

A reminder to parents and community, that all visitors to the campus must sign in at the office, when they enter school grounds. This does not need to be done when dropping students off in the morning or picking students up at 3pm. However if you are on grounds for a longer period of time then you will need to sign in.

Class teachers appreciate assistance from all

our guests and we encourage parents to check

with teachers about volunteering to help with

class activities such as reading groups or even

art’n’craft. If you would like

to help out with our

wonderful canteen please

don’t hesitate to contact

the office or the P&C for

more information.

ROAR REPORT

LENDING A HAND

Last Friday our sponsors Hunter Mutual called for ROAR to assist with a short workplace video that they are making. William Taylor, Jay-me Taylor, Luke Cronin and Dylan Cox answered the call.

The boys assisted the Hunter Mutual promotion by representing different community groups from our area using a variety of props. Check out these two photos and see if you can guess some of the identified groups.

The shoot was a lot of fun with plenty of laughs behind the scenes. We look forward to seeing the boys in the final product!

some of the delectable we conjured over the five week course.

Despite some participants claiming they couldn’t cook (Julie Russell) every member of the class prepared, cooked and served each and every dish successfully over our course. We, as a class, decided to focus on a mix of areas such as desserts, main meals and starters, which automatically increases the difficulty as you are not solely focused on pastries, desserts or whatever specific area you have chosen.

So all that aside I have chosen to share 1 of our simple recipes with you.

PARMESAN CRUSTED CHICKEN AND BEETROOT RISOTTO

Chicken Breast Bread - 2 slices Parmasen Chesse - 100g

Risotto

Aborio Rice - 150g Stock - 600ml Beetroot - 1 large Onion - 1 Spinach/Parsley - small handful Butter - 50g

Method:

Beetroot - peel. Chop. Bake in oven for approx. 20 minutes.

Chef’s suggestion - For variety you can poach beetroot in a balsamic or stock liquid. They also match well with oranges.

Crust - Blend or grate bread to make crumbs. Add finely grated Parmesan (or similar cheese)

Chicken - Trim chicken, sear in pan, place on tray, cover in crust. Bake approx. 15 -17 mins or until the chicken is cooked through and top is golden brown.

Risotto - Melt butter and oil in sauce pan. Add diced onion. Sweat for about 5 -7 minutes. Add Arborio rice and stir continuously so the oil/butter coats every grain of rice. When rice slightly browns and smells ‘nutty’ add stock.

Chef’s tip - add small amounts at a time and stir

risotto regularly. This creates a glutinous sauce around the rice adding a creamy texture to the dish. Add stock in small amounts until the rice is ready. Fold in beetroot at the end.

Optional is to add cheese at this stage – we used fetta cheese. Serve

Small School…Big Difference

This week we say a very heartfelt farewell to the Morton Family. Angus, Bonny and Clare have been absolutely brilliant students at Cassilis. They have individually made a great, positive impact on the school with their friendly personalities, hard-working attitudes and the level of respect that they show everyone else. I know that they will be very much missed by the staff and students.

Scott and Jo have always been positively involved in their children’s education and have made valuable contributions to the school, including the P&C, and have made great friendships with the staff and families.

We wish them the very best at Coolah Central and look forward to seeing them during the Coolah Performance and other inter-school activities and hearing about their continued successes.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK - ALFIE BURTON

Alfie has earned the title of ‘Student of the Week ’ , f o r t he following reasons. He has been trying his best to improve his overall performance in all areas of school and his efforts have paid off. Alfie’s reading comprehension is improving and his writing has become more desc r ip t ive during Sentence of the Day writing. He has also been playing well with his peers during play time and remembering to uphold the school rules of ‘Be safe’, ‘Be respectful’, and ‘Do your Best’ which is great to see.

Wow, is it really the last week of Term One already? That went so quickly.

Year 5/6 have had an amazingly busy term. Since our last Ringer article the majority of us represented St Joseph’s at the Diocesan Leaders Day at Lochinvar and at Blandford Horse Sports, we ran the cross country, we celebrated Holy Week and Easter, and in between all this we managed to get in a lot of quality learning and school work.

The Year Six students travelled to St Patrick’s Primary School at Lochinvar and attended the Leaders Day. This was a very insightful experience as we mixed with our peers at other schools in the Diocese. We looked at the qualities that great leaders exhibit and realised that anybody can display these qualities and be a leader. It does not matter how young a person is, with the right attitude they can be leaders. We have been incorporating these qualities into our leadership at St Joseph’s with tremendous success.

In Religion this term we have studied the topics The Life and Times of Jesus, A Time for Reconciliation, and The Way of the Cross. A major part of this learning for us as leaders has been that nobody is perfect and we are all going to make the occasional mistake in life, but it is what we learn from these mistakes and how we repent and make up for our mistakes that is really important. We researched times when Jesus forgave those who had wronged him and just like we need to make up for our own mistakes, we need to also forgive the mistakes of others.

Text books are basically a thing of the past in Year 5/6 at St Joseph’s. This means we are now writing much more than we wrote last year. It has been really good for us as we learn the subject through a range of activities such as using concrete materials, active learning, ICT, and video (with BTN proving to be extremely popular with Mr Morris), then we write and illustrate the results of this learning as opposed to doing a worksheet or something else in a book.

Our main focus this term has been Australia. HSIE, English and Creative Arts have been

based around Australian themes. HSIE has been particularly interesting as we have researched and completed PowerPoint presentations or Popplets on the Aboriginal heritage in Australia, looking at issues such as the Stolen Generation, segregation, Federation and their fight to be recognised as citizens that resulted in the 1967 Referendum. We have also learnt about the struggles that immigrants face when coming to Australia and why people from other countries wish to come and live in this great land.

We have designed our own Australian Flags incorporating white European settlement, Aboriginal heritage and recent immigration in Creative Arts. We have also studied some great Australian art this term. Artists such as Arthur Streeton and Sidney Nolan have been at the forefront of our discussions. We are currently finishing off our own Ned Kelly paintings in the style of Nolan’s ‘Ned Kelly’ series.

In Science we have had lots of different learning experiences based around Earthquakes. We have enjoyed the unit immensely learning about the tectonic plate movement in the earth, the Ring of Fire, researching earthquakes from around the world, exploring the likeness of eggs to that of the earth, using playdough as tectonic plates and shaking tables to simulate a seismometer.

We have also been improving our Spelling, Reading and Writing in English activities. We have written expositions from an aboriginal person’s point of view arguing to say YES in the 1967 referendum, a discussion on social media that has us prepared for our PDH Cyber Safety unit in Term Two and the first exposition of 2013 that was ‘2013 is going to be better than 2012’. Our last thing this term will be to write a persuasive response on ‘Has Term One 2013 been better than 2012?’ So far we think we can safely say it definitely has been.

MERRIWA PRE-SCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION

WORK, TRAINING AND ASSESSMENTS

There is at least one section of the community who votes yes to wind power. This morning the children were greeted by a magical and colourful collection of wind spinners, even before the children put down their bags, they were compelled to investigate this science and environmental experience under the shade of a tree. As educators, we hope to extend this activity for the children in future.

Flowers for our Mum's: Week 2, Term 2, we begin our gifts for Mother's Day. Staying with a much loved tradition of Merriwa Pre-School, we would like the children to make a unique flower arrangement. If you have any flowers, we would appreciate them at Pre-school the week beginning 6 May.

We are offering an accredited course in CPR through H and A training at the Merriwa Pre-School tomorrow afternoon, 12 April at approximately 3.30pm - 6pm. Cost is $ 35.00. Why not come along and take your place at the dummy and no, that doesn’t mean you sit next to me!

During the holidays on Tuesday 16 April, we will be holding a full First Aid course at the cost of $95, followed by a course in Asthma and

Anaphylaxis training costing below $4O from 10am-3pm. Please give Ciara at MAC a ring on 6548 2082 for more information.

This year, we are fortunate to have accessed a vision screener for all children in the year prior to school. Hearing assessments, however has been a little more difficult. It is recommended that you take an opportunity to have your child’s hearing tested, as early intervention is best. Please be advised that a special audiometry clinic is on Tuesday 14 May at Muswellbrook or at Merriwa 9 May, this is offered through Hunter New England Health, call 6542 2050.

Remember our Working Beezzz! Join us for a fun filled day of manual labour at your local Pre-School. I am sure you have the 13 and the 20 April highlighted on your calendar, so we will see you there for a sausage and a cool drink.

Term 1 ends on Friday 12 April and we recommence on Monday 29 April. Please note that the Central School returns for Term 2 on Wednesday 1 May. This may mean that the buses do not run on Monday 30 or Tuesday 31, please investigate this if you require this service.

When we do return for term 2, it will begin with our day indoors. This will be a significant change for the children, especially those in our younger groups. We will enjoy our outdoor play session after morning tea.

A committee meeting for the Merriwa Activity Centre and Pre-School will be held tonight at the Pre-School at 6pm, all are welcome. Tonight, we will be discussing a grant from the Federal Government which will significantly reduce Pre-School fees for Term 2 and will continue this year for children heading to school in 2014. We are very excited to pass this reduction on to families.

We hope you have a lovely break and we will see you back on Monday 29 April to enjoy some exciting changes to our playground.

Leah Folpp and the Educators of Merriwa

MERRIWA ACTIVITY CENTRE After School and Vacation Care

Catering for 5 – 12 year olds

Hasn’t the weather changed quickly this month! Fun as usual to be had at MAC, we’ve really been showing our creative side making badges and drawing some fabulous art work!

Did you every day we take 15 minutes out of fun filled afternoons to complete our homework?

The children have responded very positively to this as when they complete a homework session they receive a sticker for the homework chart. Once they have five stickers, they are able to pick a prize from our prize box. Parents have also had a positive response to it, as it relieves some of the pressure when children arrive home. Not only is MAC a place your child can have fun but we also are here to help with your child’s learning. If there is any areas you would like to see us, as educators, focus more on, please don’t hesitate to approach me and let me know.

DO YOU NEED VACATION CARE?

Wow didn’t this term go quick! With the two weeks off, comes the hard task of finding someone to mind the kiddies. Dates that MAC will be open this holidays are 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 26 April. However, we will open other days if we have our four children minimum to operate.

I urge you to book in now, we have lots of fun planned including visiting the skate park, fishing and a fantastic excursion planned to Singleton Movies and ten pin bowling, 23 April. MAC is somewhere you can send your child in the school holidays where they can enjoy time with friends, meet new people and learn through educational fun activities. We are here for the Merriwa

community, to help parents guarantee their children are in a safe environment. Vacation fees are a maximum $32 per day but if you have a CRN number you can claim the Child Care Benefit reducing your daily fee. So in these holidays there is no need to be chasing family and friends to mind your children, MAC is here for your use!

SCHOOL HOLIDAY EXCURSION

On 23 April, MAC is setting off on our holiday excursion to S i ng l e t o n Mov i e s followed by Ten Pin bowling! Our excursions are always great fun and the children love t hem! To avo i d disappointment I ask you book in ASAP so we can guarantee your child a spot on our fun filled day away! Price for this excursion is your daily fee of $32 plus $5 excursion fee. Children may also bring their own spending money to buy something yummy from the candy bar. Once again I urge you to book in now to avoid missing out.

FIRST AID AND ASTHMA AND ANAPHYLAXIS COURSES BEING HELD

THIS MONTH

This month we will have a qualified trainer in first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis attending our service on 16 April. Whether you need your first aid or just your asthma and anaphylaxis, please give me a call Ciara on 6548 2082. Courses are very reasonably priced!

Have you ever read a book that made you feel different about life or what you are doing?

You feel enthusiastic, you feel motivated, you feel excited. I have read a few novels, articles and text books that have made me feel like that. I sometimes read some articles in magazines that make you feel like ‘I’ve got to try that or change’. I have read articles about farming and management that have made me think ‘That makes a lot of sense, I’ll have to try and learn more’. This happened to me when I heard about ‘Holistic Farming’.

It just made so much sense to not farm just for profit or production but to manage your farming strategy to manage and consider: the soil, the plants, the family, the animals, the community, what my goals were, profit, whenever I made a farm decision. It required me to change my practices and ways of thinking but it was a whole lot more satisfying for everyone. I now know a lot of farmers who farm this way and it has changed their lives.

On Sunday at St David’s, we heard from Rhyllis Davies from the bible society. Rhyllis was talking about how people around the world are finding that when they read the bible their lives changed. Did you know that Nigeria has the fastest growing Christian community in the world. In the Muslim world the bible society is struggling to keep up with the printing of bibles for countries such as Syria, Iran and Iraq.

People in countries around the world, just by reading about a God who cares, will sacrifice himself for you personally and wants to be friend with you, are changing the way they are live. We don’t have all the anxieties of war and persecution in some of these countries but we do have the anxieties of work security, health and managing money. Most people in our society are struggling to cope. We know this by the number of mental health reports that are coming out.

But reading about the activities of Jesus and then applying and believing in the teaching he gives us, can and is, making a difference to many peoples lives. Why don’t you try reading some parts of the bible! It actually is a library of books. Start with the book of Mark and then the Book of Acts and see if your life will be changed.

REFLECTION None of us can say that we have no regrets. Often we are led down paths of bad choices -some paths longer than others - which can have a lingering effect on the mind, body, and soul.

While some consequences from the past may remain, we can be confident that God has a good and glorious future for those who trust in him!

RELIEVING THE PRESSURE OF HEART DISEASE

On April 7 each year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) selects and highlights a major world health issue. This year the theme is High Blood Pressure.

Of course, having some blood pressure is vitally important. It’s what keeps those life- sustaining, oxygenated red blood cells circulating around our body. But too much blood pressure can result in a catastrophic outcome – just like a pressure cooker on high heat without an escape valve.

Blood pressure is designated by two readings. The higher of these (the systolic) is a measure of the pressure when the heart is beating and the lower reading (the diastolic) is a measure of resting pressure – when the heart relaxes. Blood pressure is usually measured in millimetres of mercury – abbreviated to “mmHg” – and if the systolic reading is equal to or above 140 mmHg and/or the diastolic reading equal to or above 90 mmHg then the blood pressure is considered to be high.

Hypertension (the medical term for abnormally high blood pressure) has been designated by the WHO as one of the most serious risk factors for death worldwide. It is estimated that about 30% of Australian adults have hypertension; and most of these people are receiving no treatment.

What makes hypertension so serious is that, well before the explosive heart attack or stroke occurs, there is underlying, sometimes irreparable damage done to the cardiovascular system, the kidneys and the brain. Also, hypertension, especially when combined with diabetes, significantly increases the risk of blindness.

In most cases the actual cause of high blood pressure can’t be identified, but we do know what groups of people are most at risk of developing hypertension; and we do know ways whereby we can reduce the risk.

There are usually no symptoms of hypertension; at least generally not until the blood pressure reaches a sustained dangerous level. So, if there is a history in the family of heart disease, kidney disease or diabetes, a regular – at least yearly – check up with your GP is essential.

If you do have hypertension, regular and long term treatment with medication will most likely be a necessity. Understanding how these blood pressure medicines work is helpful; and your pharmacist can provide you with so-called Consumer Medicines Information (CMI) which explains the benefits and the occasional problems you may encounter. Uncomfortable side effects with anti-hypertensive therapy can sometimes be experienced, especially in the early stages of treatment, so it’s nice to know what to expect.

For more information about hypertension ask for the Blood Pressure fact card at Merriwa Pharmacy. There are also cards on Diabetes, Weight and Health, Exercise and the Heart, and Staying a Non-Smoker.

Taking ownership of a medical condition will often help improve outcomes. With hypertension this can sometimes be achieved by the use of home blood pressure measuring devices. The modern machines are simple and easy to use. Check with your doctor whether one of these could be an advantage. And if you have trouble remembering to take your blood pressure tablets, a “dose administration aid” or medication blister pack could help.

It’s as well to remember that there are some medicines – both prescription and non-

Thursday and Friday

Hello Merriwa! I am back with apologies after missing last week due to illness. My apologies extend to everyone who eagerly opened the Ringer searching for my article, only to be disappointed by the non-attendance.

TODAY’S TOPIC : CARBOHYDRATES

This is a controversial subject in nutrition worlds at the moment. There are some ideas that carbohydrates (carbs) are the enemy in a fat loss diet. Here are some facts:

Our bodies need carbohydrates to live Our brain prefers carbohydrates as an

energy source Carbohydrates make up a large part of

our diet Excess or poor carbohydrate choice can

increase body fat Poor quantity choice can affect blood

sugar levels and have health effects

It is accepted that carbs are essential. What foods make up this category you ask? Basically, any plant based foods that convert to sugar in our bodies. Where this gets tricky is in the production and use of these foods.

For example, wheat is a carbohydrate. Wheat is used for pasta, flour, semolina and many other products. What this means is that carbs end up meaning everything from cakes, pastries, pasta, fruits, quinoa, noodles, beans etc.

Now to have a category of foods that could have sprouted grain bread and sweetened cup cakes in the same category is nearly impossible to understand and navigate successfully. Following is a list of some high quality carbohydrates:

Sweet potato Quinoa

Polenta Brown rice Peas/beans – kidney, cannelloni, chick

peas, etc. When using these foods simple is best, and here is what I do with some of those foods –

mashed sweet potato quinoa can be used to make a mash or

porridge type of mixture brown rice (boiled) can be used to make

fried rice peas/beans can be stewed with tomato or

in stock, you can make hommus from chick peas, add them to dishes like osso bucco or lamb shanks.

There are no real rules with how you use the carbs above, just experiment and do whatever tastes nice. Remember to eat lots of vegetables and fruits to go with the complex carbs listed above.

I hope I have shed some light on this subject and can add some variety to your diet. I would like to take this chance to thank people for their feedback over the last few weeks. Many people have asked about topics they would like explained which I most definitely will do next school term.

As always if you would like me to explain something or would like some tips on cookery in a certain area please contact me at Merriwa Central School on 6548 2119.

MEN’S BREAKFAST 27 APRIL

Come along for a fine feast, a chin wag, and lots of information on the Boer War memorial being designed for ANZAC Parade, Canberra. Maybe you have a relative who fought in that campaign so long ago 1899-1902, start searching your family records. I have learned that there was the Belltrees Troop 1st Australian Horse engaged in service with Lieut. Ebsworth in South Africa. They were Donald Cameron, William Cameron, Duncan Cumming, James P. Hartney, Thomas Minch and Richard J Roe. You will be able to meet the author of this story Les Perrett. Les quotes in his book, Lt Ebsworth’s words as the troop left the station are reported to have been “We won’t disgrace Belltrees”. Naturally the whole troop of employees was mounted on Belltrees’s finest horses. Tony Larnach-Jones (Chairman NSW Committee of National Boer War Memorial Association) and Les Perrett (Author of two books of historical stories of the Boer War), will take you on a journey of interest, informing us of just how wonderful those 23,000 Australian soldiers were who fought in the Boer War.

“HOLY TRINITY” ANGLICAN CHURCH

Did you watch the “Call the Midwife” first series)? On her rounds nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) met a Boer War veteran with ulcerated legs that needed daily dressings. And then there is “Downton Abbey”. We see Bates sentenced to 20 years hard labour for murdering his ex-wife. Bates served as batman to Earl of Grantham during the Boer War. The relationship at the front between Lord Grantham and his soldier-servant batman was as close to being friends as the class difference allowed.

Last but not least, I had a Great Uncle who was Killed in Action, was one of the famous “Fighting 29” and was buried at Carolina 10 October, 1900. Trooper Frederick Avard was awarded The Queen’s South African medal together with eight service bars. Following in the spirit of ANZAC Day, come along to the men’s breakfast in the Parish hall, McKenzie St. and learn of the quest of the National Boer War Memorial Association’s to build a memorial to these wonderful soldiers in Anzac parade, Canberra.

You don’t need luck on your side to gain loan approval

Success relies on borrowers of all types ticking the check boxes

here is a range of competitive home loan deals available in today’s mortgage market but potential borrowers may miss out on the offers if their loan approval is knocked-back or delayed. To ensure a smooth approval process, Mortgage Choice urges potential borrowers of all types to tick all the check boxes in their loan application.

Local Mortgage Choice franchise owner Lauren Murphy said, “Applying for loan approval of any type requires more than having good luck on your side. It is important to understand what lenders will be looking for when deciding to loan you money to purchase property, renovate, or for other means.”

“Lenders have different but fair methods for determining whether borrowers can take on a loan secured against a property. They look for evidence that the borrower is a good saver or has built equity, and has a healthy credit record, steady employment and manageable levels of debt.

“Keep in mind this applies to all types of borrowers, whether it is your first, fifth or fiftieth loan application, lenders will still assess your ability to borrow funds each and every time.

“Having the help of a professional mortgage broker in the loan approval process may help. Working with you to complete the loan application, your mortgage broker will know the lender’s requirements, prompt you to supply the required documentation and submit the application on your behalf. The mortgage broker will then follow up the application and

help guide the loan to settlement.”

To put you on a path to a smooth loan approval process, I have compiled a basic five step checklist from which to start:

1. Steady employment and regular savings - Lenders want to see a steady employment history and evidence of regular savings. For existing borrowers, they look for regular loan repayments. Some lenders consider rental payments as savings evidence, but there may be conditions attached, so do your research.

2. Clean credit file - Check whether you have multiple enquires or any defaults in your credit history, and if so, try to resolve them with the relevant credit provider before you apply for a home loan and if need be, provide an explanation to your lender. You can order a copy of your credit file from suppliers such as www.mycreditfile.com.au.

3.Satisfactory statements - Your recent bank statements should be free from any suspicious withdrawals or transfers such as movements of sizeable sums of money into or from your account/s. If this does occur, include an explanation for the transaction in your loan application.

4. Document your debt - Lenders will require you to list your current financial commitments, such as rent car and personal loans, credit and store cards, HELP debt, child maintenance, etc. Have your records on hand. Keep in mind the amount owed on your store and credit cards will not be the key factor for lenders; when assessing your ability to repay the loan, lenders will consider your overall credit limit.

5. Know your limits - For those looking to purchase property, there may be borrowing limitations based on your deposit amount and/or the property’s location, size and type. For these reasons, consider using a local mortgage broker to help you research the mortgage market before applying for a loan.

MORE THAN JUST A POST OFFICE

Rotary organisations throughout the world assert the common theme of giving service to community. The Rotary organisation is a well-tested and developed network of national and international clubs. Merriwa Rotary takes pride in being a part of this larger organisation and which, on many occasions, is able to provide financial assistance to communities in need in Australia. There are many other local organisations and members from our community who are active in raising funds and giving support locally as well as nationally. Recently Rotary was presented with cheques from the following community organisations; Trinity Markets ($500.00), Joan Morgan Town Appeal for the bushfire victims in Coonabarabran and Tasmania ($3,473.50) and an anonymous donation of ($1,000.00).

Special mention must go to Joan Morgan who also acknowledges and gives thanks for the generosity of the Merriwa community, and especially the Merriwa RSL, for holding the Appeal Day and donating a percentage of all meals and drinks sold on the day and also to Huw and Greg Llewelyn for their roles as auctioneers.

It was decided by the club that all the donations received would be best used for helping with the Bushfire appeal and so Merriwa Rotary also contributed $526.50 in addition to the other donations bringing the total amount to $5,500.00. The Rotary Club of Merriwa has sent a cheque to the Rotary Club of Coonabarabran for $3,500 and to Rotary Tasmania Bush Fire Appeal for $2,000.00.

Rotary Clubs in the affected areas have been able to apply local knowledge of where the funds can best be used. To date, Rotary has contributed in both bush fire affected communities by providing volunteer working bees, material for fencing, funding for pasture reseeding and fertilizing, laid cement for silo pads and supplying feed for livestock. Merriwa Rotary extends their thanks to all local organisations and people who have contributed to the 2013 Bush Fire Appeal.

If you would like to find out more about Rotary, our regular dinner meetings are at the Sports Club, Tuesday nights 7pm for 7.30pm dinner. Membership is open to both men and women.

In a recent MHEG Ringer article, I reported that the township of Merriwa would be exempt from coal seam gas mining because of amendments to the laws brought in by the NSW Government. It now appears that this statement was incorrect and for this, I apologise.

For a township to be exempt from coal seam gas mining it must have 1000 or more residents and Merriwa’s population is below this figure.

This makes it even more important that Merriwa and district becomes involved in the process of declaring itself to be a Coal Seam Gasfield Free Community.

Many communities within NSW including the Liverpool Plains communities of Blackville, Mullaley and Warrah have already undertaken this process. Bunnun, Denman and Baerami are now planning to proceed in this direction.

Merriwa is at present a missing link in the Upper Hunter, and MHEG urges all residents to research and consider the implications of this extractive industry should it come to our district.

We will be advertising a public meeting date shortly. In the meantime, I would welcome any queries you may have regarding this matter (6548 5171).

There were no doubt times when York Motors’ strict business protocols may have saved us from falling into the traps which sometimes snared others. We had several drivers, including one whose parents years before had emigrated to Australia from one of the old British Asian colonies, Burma or Hong Kong perhaps, or maybe a lesser known one such as Sarawak or British North West Borneo (now Sabah). He must have still had connections there because he returned occasionally. He was only with us a few months before he left, and had probably been making plans for some time, because he then carried out a very careful, well organised and successful scam. He had been living in the western suburbs with a woman who was apparently well off after receiving an inheritance. After he left us he told her he desperately wanted to go interstate trucking on his own account but did not have the wherewithal so she provided him with $40,000 to buy a truck plus some working expenses, this in the 1970s when $40,000 plus was worth a good deal more than now.

He negotiated with a large Sydney steel merchant and fabricator under which he would provide a prime mover and they would supply him with their own specialised semitrailer and sufficient work to keep him busy, a normal subcontracting arrangement. On the strength of this he agreed to buy a prime mover from a well known truck company in Sydney. On a Friday afternoon (always late on a Friday afternoon!!) a few days before he was scheduled to take delivery of the truck he went to them saying the steel company had an urgent interstate delivery already loaded on their trailer, no prime mover, and wanted him to take it to Melbourne for delivery next day, Saturday. The truck company declined his personal cheque and he said in that case he risked losing the contract and the deal would be off. However, he asked them to ring his bank which would no doubt verify the money was there to meet his personal cheque for $40,000. They did this, though I suspect the bank did not say they would honour it, but only that at the time there were sufficient funds to do so. York Motors would not have accepted this, the salesman would have had

WOOLBROOK RURAL INDUSTRIES

to go with the customer to the bank and get a bank cheque before delivery, and if the bank were closed by the time they got there, then no delivery. Anyway, in the end they agreed to give delivery on the strength of his personal cheque and he took off that night, loaded with steel to Melbourne, where he also had everything organised.

About the middle of the following week I received an anguished call from the General Manager who had authorised the truck delivery. The cheque had bounced and nobody, including the woman he was living with and the steel company, seemed to know where our likely lad was, and it was some time before everything, or most of it, was finally revealed. The prime mover, the semitrailer and the load of steel had completely disappeared for ever, the first two no doubt dismantled for spare parts and the load of steel sold to a fence, a steel fence no doubt! (Sorry!). On Monday, when the banks opened in Melbourne, he had cleaned the account out except for a couple of thousand dollars, gone to the airport, and by the time the cheque bounced he was long gone to Asia somewhere!

We had an odd case when a very well known British TV personality (well, at least he was well known forty odd years ago) was receiving much publicity prior to a planned tour in Australia. One of our salesmen had taken a call from, and personally spoken to, a man claiming to be in charge of the preparations for the tour. He was staying at a very expensive hotel in the Sydney CBD where he seemed to treated with some reverence, and he said the requirements for the proposed tour included two medium sized coaches, a large prime mover with a semitrailer pantechnicon for all his gear, two forklifts, a table top truck to carry them, and

other items such as a couple of station wagons and smaller equipment. The salesman asked me what he should do, and I said play along with him (obviously such a sale, if genuine, was very valuable, but also the possible PR and publicity) without offending him in any way, but remember not to commit us to anything while I made some enquiries. At that time I had a good many contacts in the trucking and trucking related industries including forklift companies and body builders, and soon found that our customer had done the rounds with many of them, though we appeared to be the only truck

Anyway, to cut a long story short, our salesman had several contacts with him over about three weeks before going to see him one day at his hotel, only to be told that the day before some men in white coats, accompanied by a couple of police, had arrived and taken him away in an ambulance. He had caught the hotel for several thousand dollars and various other companies for smaller amounts, but fortunately York Motors protocols meant he had cost us nothing except inconvenience and wasted time.

There is nothing quite as romantic as the smell of leather, clanging of stirrups and the snorts of horses in the mist of an early morning at the annual Sandy Hollow Charity Horse Ride in aid of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Every year over 200 riders gather in Sandy Hollow for one of the most beautiful rides you can ever experience. Sandy Hollow invites all riders to join them for this wonderful event on Saturday 20 April.

Famously, riders return year after year to experience the wonderful bush ride and country hospitality Sandy Hollow is renowned for. Riders from all walks of life and from all over Australia descend on Sandy Hollow the Friday evening before the ride or in the early hours of the morning the ride begins. Camping is available on the ride site behind the school (entrance will be signposted), Visitors are welcome to camp for a modest fee of $10 per vehicle, there are toilets and showers provided at the camp site.

Entertainment will be provided at the Tourist Hotel on Friday 19 April, along with steak and sausage sandwiches available for sale. The ride will muster at 7.00am Saturday morning from the new location in the village of Sandy Hollow. A hearty breakfast is available for sale from 6am.

Over the past 19 years the Sandy Hollow Charity Horse Ride has raised in excess of $250,000 for the Westpac Helicopter Appeal. This year the ride hopes to break its record for number of riders and to raise over $50,000 to donate to this vital service. Xstrata Coal Mangoola have come on board with a large donation to boost the funds raised by the Sandy Hollow Rescue Helicopter Support group.

Major sponsors who have supported the ride since its inception include Arrowfield Stud, Bowditch & Partners Earthmoving, Baramul Stud, Coolmore Stud, Tourist Hotel Sandy Hollow, Paul Harrison Transport, Sandy Hollow Service Station, Sowters Transport, Widden Stud and Xstrata Coal. Many local businesses and individuals have come forward to generously donate items for the charity auction which will begin at Sandy Hollow’s local hall from 4pm. Auction items include hay, bush furniture, firewood, horse rugs, items from local thoroughbred studs and high quality wines from the local wineries.

The event offers a full weekend of entertainment starting on Friday evening with a band and barbeque at the Tourist Hotel, Sandy Hollow. Following the ride on the Saturday at 4pm is a charity auction at the Sandy Hollow Hall, activities for the children include a jumping castle and a bucking bull for adults and children. The popular band ‘The Revin Rockers’ will take us into the night with great music. Drinks will be available from 4pm at the bar until late.

The day will provide a considerable amount of cross country riding which will cater for experienced riders and also those a little less confident. The ride will take riders through vineyards and up along the beautiful hills to take in the breath-taking views of the valley and surrounding areas. No stallions or horse drawn vehicles allowed on the ride and all riders under the age of 18 must wear a helmet.

Local community groups have catering well organised. Marshals will be on duty on the ride to help anyone needing assistance. Morning tea and lunch will be available during the ride and there will be water supplied for the horses. Dinner will be available for all attendees in the evening.

Entry for the ride is $20 per person and $50 for a family group, which includes morning tea. Entry for the Saturday afternoon and evening activities is free but a donation would be well appreciated. DPI guidelines apply to the day.

ROSTO OLIVES MERRIWA FESTIVAL OF THE FLEECES

7 AND 8 JUNE

“OUR PRIVILEGE TO SPONSOR”

''Rosto Olive Oil” is pleased to be a sponsor of the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces as we feel it is such a wonderfully wholesome event.

Even before we planted our first Olive tree 15 years ago our sheep ran free down Merriwa's main street, adorned with red socks!

We love the reminder of the importance of sheep in Merriwa's history and indeed in Australia. We recall the days when the festival was held in the historic Brindley Park woolshed and last year loved watching man work with his trusty sheep dog.

After several years of drought we found sheep too hard on our country so the family resolved to plant 60,000 olive trees over six years (the olive tree is able to cope with drought by stopping transpiration from leaves when too hot and protecting roots with a cork like compound).

Despite this resilience we recently lost many trees in a lightening grass fire. A disaster was avoided thanks to volunteer firefighters from all over Merriwa. The volunteering spirit, that enables events like the festival ,is the heart of Merriwa.

It is our privilege to be part of the Merriwa community and to be a major sponsor of the Festival of the Fleeces 2013.

Thank you.

Regards Steve

COUNTING DOWN TO THE FESTIVAL

The June long weekend is only 9 weeks away. Where else can you watch a mob of sheep (in red socks) leading a parade. Have you invited your family and friends to Merriwa for this weekend? If not then do it soon, as they may make other plans. This is the one weekend of the year were we can promise to entertain all. There are the stalls in the street; the quilting display; ROAR will be there with their remarkable display of animals; there are sheep dogs and shearing displays; dog high jump; a small display of old machinery and memorabilia, a petting zoo; NBN’s BIG DOG; Helicopter flights and football. The Best

Dressed Business Window; and many other activities and entertainment, including the bag pipes! There is still time to enter a float or have a street stall. Contact Liam at the VIC/CTC for your entry forms.

The Parade commences at 12.00pm with a Fireworks display at the showground at 5.30pm. I look forward to seeing you all there.

The Cassilis Rodeo this year was postponed from the 2 February to the 26 April due to rain. This was a huge disappointment for the committee and everyone involved as so much work goes into organising this successful event.

The Cassilis rodeo was born in 1983. A group of locals decided to run a rodeo and campdraft on the same day. With the idea to raise money for the different organisations of the Cassilis district. The campdraft would start off at first light and run to 3.00pm. For the next two hours the committee would transform the grounds into a rodeo arena. The rodeo will start at 5.00pm and run to late.

With very little resources the chutes, lights, toilets and time event gear was either donated or hired. The Camp draft event ceased in the early 1990s. This was very unfortunate for the community but the rodeo stayed strong and got stronger as the years went by. This was the community’s largest fundraising event for the year and the rules were you work it, you receive. So with that the Pony Cub, School, Park Trust and Churches all had tasks to preform and would receive a percentage of the profits.

With the small towns population on the 5 Saturday of the year swelling from 110 to excess of 1500 people the rodeo provides the community with on average $8000.00 of money to share between the different organisations. We see the rodeo as a non-profit organisation as all money raised goes back into the community. The Cassilis rodeo has hosted many champion drafters, barrel racers, timed event competitors and cowboys, even a national championship was held at Cassilis. Novice events have always been a big feature of our rodeo as that’s where it all begins.

This year saw a mix of new and old hands form the committee. This mix has worked well and has achieved a lot, namely the construction of entirely new chutes, race and overhead ramp. It was a major undertaking with many man hours volunteered over many weekends to erect and install the new facilities. It has been heartening to see how easily so many volunteers have given up their weekends to help the Rodeo progress forward. Some of the volunteers have been old hands who have been volunteering for years, along with new people who just have an interest in seeing an established prized local event continue. The committee in the future would like to improve the yarding, loading, unsaddling, bar and canteen areas.

The War Memorial Park Trust, the caretaker of the park have also been working hard with new unisex and disabled toilets installed. The Parks Trust is also in the planning stage of other major improvements to the parks facilities (watch this space).

A big thank you must be expressed to all of our past and existing sponsors. Running a rodeo is costly and without the sponsorship it would not be possible.

Finally thank you to the township of Cassilis and all of its volunteers for providing this great event for the last 31 years.

Hope to see you all on 26 April 2013 at the Cassilis rodeo.

Hello Lovelies. Welcome to this week’s Guru Ringer write-up. Time sure does fly on by when you’re busy winding back your clock and you think should I be going forwards or backwards - you have a mental blank. Then you think what on earth will we have for dinner tonight and look down and see a clock in your hand and think, why am I holding this clock. Then you remember you go back an hour with the time and need to remember if you were ripped off an hour or did I score an extra hours sleep? Then you work it out, you scored an extra hour sleep but then you think… there’s so many clocks in this house, surely I don’t have to change them all now. What will we have for dinner, anyway? We can’t have left over Easter eggs again. What on earth am I thinking?

“HAPPY GURU” THE HIPPY SHOP

We’ve never had Easter eggs for dinner. Why is everyone always eating Easter eggs for dinner these days? Oh, wait. That was a dream I was having when I woke up this morning. I’m not sure that extra hour of sleep was worth it. I was dreaming like a mad man and these clocks are doing my head in. Six clocks down, three to go. Where’s the manual for this dumb clock on the stove. The time on the oven always flashes at 11.22am, my date of birth – that’s freaky. How can I change it? The time I mean, not my date of birth. Oh dear. How I digress.

This week we have a massive delivery coming in from one of our favourite suppliers. The order should be in store and mostly unpacked by the time the Ringer reaches you, so be sure to come in and have a look at the new arrivals.

Ok, that does it for another week. As always, be fabulous and smile, you’re designed to. Love and Peace.

Duncan Carey

This month’s theme is going to prove a challenge, but with a little thought, we’re sure you’ll come up with some creative entries. In submitting your photos, one thing we look for are images with clean lines, sharp, crisp details and no blurring (unless it relates to the photo). 99% of the time, when an image is not sharp it’s because of camera movement. Any amount of movement can potentially blur an image, but there are several things you can do to avoid camera shake.

If your shutter speed is slow, you will need to support your camera or use a tripod. Generally anything under 1/60’s will need to be stabilised with a tripod.

If you have “image stabiliser” turn it on to reduce vibration, however if you are using a tripod, make sure it’s turned off as it can actually have the opposite affect and

reduce sharpness.

Use the sharpest aperture. This is typically 2 to 3 stops down from the widest aperture, putting it around f/8 on most lenses.

Use your mirror lock-up (MLU). This holds the mirror in its retracted position so that when you take your shot, it doesn’t move.

Increase your shutter speed – a faster speed is less susceptible to movement.

Learn and understand the relationship between is-shutter speed-aperture. There are a combination of techniques you can use for getting sharper images.

Regardless of whether you use the manual or automatic settings on your camera, there is one common fault that lies with the photographer, rather than the camera. That’s the actual taking of a photo. When pressing down the shutter button, do so as gently as you can. Squeeze the button until you have finished taking the image, then release. What a lot of photographers do is jab it and release straight away. The camera detects even the slightest movement and can cause blurred images.

All entries are to be submitted by Monday 29 April, 2013 by 12:00pm. The criteria set by the Festival of the Fleeces Committee for this competition is quite broad, so grab your camera and let’s see what you can come up with.

What a season we have had. The rosemary planted throughout Merriwa has done pretty well. We need to get this year’s ANZAC Day needs organised. Sydney Legacy were very pleased with last year’s efforts and are looking for the same support again this year. They sent us some photos of the event including the Governor receiving a sprig made from the Gallipoli rosemary planted at the Merriwa Cenotaph.

The time table for April will work like this:

Rosemary collection: Wednesday 17 Rosemary delivered to Sydney: Monday 22 Legacy makes sprigs: Monday 22 - Wednesday 24 ANZAC Day: Thursday 25

As always, we can improve on the way we did things last year. Legacy have suggested two possible ideas. The first would be to trim the rosemary to the final sprig size so that we don’t send material that has a high wastage rate and generates high volume of material to be transported.

The second is to place the sticker onto the sprig and box them up. These steps are feasible but depend on the volume of volunteers that can be mustered.

We will need volunteers to: Harvest public areas and collect

rosemary from contributors Trim, tag and refrigerate sprigs for

dispatch Dispatch to Sydney

If you are able to assist, please contact the Merriwa RSL Club and leave your details. Volunteers are also being sourced of the Merriwa Central School.

MERRIWA RUGBY LEAGUE

Last Saturday saw the start of the local footy season with the Magpies taking on Scone at Merriwa’s No 1 oval.

With a few players out with work commitments and a lot of new faces, the boys started the game well pressuring Scones line for the first 10 mins but unfortunately to no avail. Scone crossed the try line in about the 18th min mark, and followed with a couple more tries before the break to take a 22 - 0 lead at half time.

Scone scored twice more in the second half, but to Merriwa’s credit they continued to play a hard physical game and eventually where rewarded with a late try, with the final score Scone 34 Merriwa 6. The players tried hard all game and I am confident with some hard training, more game time together and the return of a few players the teams future will be bright.

This week the Magpies are away to Greta-Branxton on Sunday, kick off time 12.30pm, with the next home game being Saturday the 20 April at 3.00pm against Aberdeen.

MERRIWA RSL UNDER

6’S

Congratulations to all our under 6’s for such a wonderful and comical game on Saturday against Scone. All our little players had such a great time showing us what they have learnt over the last couple of weeks at training. It is great to see their smiling faces on the field and giving it their best the whole time. Well done to Daniel, Logan, Toby F, Annabelle, Mervyn Jnr, Toby J, Jackson and Sanita. Keep up the good work.

Zoe Jamieson

ROSTO OIL UNDER 7’S

Well done to the under 7's for a great first game of the season. Dakota, Hudson, Dylan, Riley, Roy, Jack and Clayton were all excited for the whole 30 minutes out there on the field. A little slow with their defence at the start but by the second

third they improved by defending their line together as a team, pulling off some great tackles. Lots of impressive runs had by all, not one of them too shy to have a go. Good on you boys and Dakota, and thank you to Jackson and Logan for playing for us too.

Belinda Keane

KINGSLYN UNDER 8'S

First game of the season for the 8's was a little daunting with some first time footballers and some 7's playing up an age group to fill in the numbers. Well done Lachlan, Jack N, Jack F, Tom, Riley, Hudson, Dustyn and Dylan on a great game. Merriwa's defence was well and truly tested with Scone making some quick passes and moving up on us quickly when we had the ball. The boys never gave up and enjoyed every bit of it. We have a few things to work on so let’s all get to training, Tuesdays and Fridays 4.30pm.

Belinda Keane

KINGSLYN UNDER 9’S

Wow! What a challenging first game of the season against a tough Singleton team. It has been a while between seasons but our under 9 boys got out on that field and played a fantastic game. With every single player eager to play. Congratulation to Charles, Kade, Damian, Christian, Tom, Dylan, Will and Dustyn. You all showed great team work throughout the game and it paid off with 6 tries being scored. Continue to train hard and work together guys, well done.

ROCKWELL U10’S

Rockwell 10s got the early game of the day, and with only one training day as a team, did really well against Singletons’ best side, showing some signs of a great team who will be there at the end of the season.

WELDERUP UNDER 14’S

Merriwa 14's started the season with a sound performance despite being beaten by Beresfield/Thornton on Saturday, final score 28 points to 26. Our defence was very loose in the first half but improved markedly in the second half. John Whitby played a great game scoring four tries and kicking one goal. Cody Towell also scored a try and Joseph Whaley kicked two goals. Both teams scored five tries with one goal being the difference. Players player was John Whitby and the Coaches award went to Hamish Cameron. Well done boys it was an encouraging start to the season and I’m confident we will get better each week.

Next week, we head to Singleton for our mini/mods, our U14s are playing at number 1 oval, Merriwa on Saturday, so come along and support any of the teams or even help out. We are always in need of

volunteers to help, where ever we can get them. Times to be advised.

JUNIOR NETBALL - VIOLETS

Merriwa Violets played against the Daisies on Saturday. The girls all put in a huge effort and the game ended in a 16 all draw.

Elly played the first half in Goal Defence and was awesome! Her opponents hardly got a chance to shoot as Elly was too strong.

Jasmine played Goal Keeper in the first half and helped Elly keep the opposition goals to a minimum. She stuck to her opponent and did an amazing job of keeping the goals down.

Emily played in Goal Shooter and did a great job getting a few goals for her team. She worked hard to get open, against a much taller opponent, and showed great attacking skills.

Jemma played really well in both her positions but did particularly well in Goal Attack, helping Emily in the circle. She got in great position to shoot goals and to help get the ball to the circle.

Mackenzie played the first half in Centre and put in a lot of effort to get the team in great position. She moved around well in attack and got a lot of intercepts in defence to get the ball back to her team.

Julia, Paige, Zoey and Skye join our team from Scone. They are a great asset and put in 100% every time they step on the court. Considering the girls never train as a team they have done really well in their games so far.

Thank you to Maddilyn and Shai for helping run

the girls on Saturday as Taylah was away.

OPEN 13’S DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

Teianna Taylor, April Eipper, Paige McConnell, Peita Cassar and Jazzmine Orton have joined the Scone Development Squad and are playing great netball. Although the girls were not lucky enough to take a win, they put their full effort into the game. Paige was a demon at shooting, taking the most goals for their team, with the support of April and Jazzmine. Teianna defended well and for her first game, Peita played strong, showing great determination.

The girls then travelled to Tamworth to play in the gala day where they played five games. The girls were able to take home one win for the day.

OPEN BLACK MAGIC

Merriwa Black Magic opens netball team played against a young Curlie Wurlies team on Saturday. They wore their new shirts for the first time and they look fabulous.

We decided that we would put all the bibs in a bag and pull one out and that is where we would play. Most players were out of position but all played well regardless.

Kym stated before the game that she dreads the time she pulls out Centre and that’s exactly what she did in the first quarter. She need not have worried though as she made a great Centre, putting lots of pressure on the

opposition. She then also played Goal Shooter and after telling us all she can’t shoot she scored a few goals.

Maddilyn and Taylah played Goal Shooter & Goal Attack and scored about 20 goals in a quarter, what an awesome effort. They played well together in the circle, I was very proud. Both Maddilyn and Taylah try very hard every week in all positions.

Shai played in a number of positions but she is always so strong in defence the opposing competitors don’t stand a chance.

Alicia played a quarter as Goal Keeper and prevented so many goals working hard to keep the scoring to a minimum. Alicia always gives 100% whether she plays attack or defence.

Kellie played great in the four positions she played in, even the quarter as Centre. She seemed to think that she was struggling but everyone else thought she was doing an amazing job playing Centre in the last quarter.

In the end everyone had a great time and played really well and we won 44 to 15. The defence was perfect and the attacking options, especially in the circle, were spot on.

Thank you to our sponsor, Merriwa Painting

and Decorating.
