The pilgrim Church is required to do one thing on its Lenten journey: to walk continually with Christ as his Body born of water and the Spirit, seeking God’s will, helping the reign of God to be known on earth, being led to the end of our journey, transfigured for all time into the company of heaven.

Christ’s face became as dazzling as the sun, his

clothes as radiant as light. -Matthew 17:2

THE JOURNEY OF TRANSFIGURATION “We used to be such good friends. How is it that you’ve moved so far away?” one man asked another. “Perhaps,” the other replied, “you have moved away. By standing still.” This exchange very well could have happened between Peter and Jesus, had Peter been allowed to erect tents to stay on the mount of the Transfiguration. He nearly succumbed to the temptation to stay in a place of wonder and light. But Jesus knew the hard truth: we are on a continual journey when we are walking the paths of God’s will. It is not good for us to stay in one place on our faith journey. Equally unhealthy is staying put in times of joy and wonder to avoid life’s difficulties, or to wallow in our trials and temptations and fail to be companions for our sisters and brothers who are also suffering—or celebrating! The pilgrim Church is required to do one thing on its Lenten journey: to walk continually with Christ as his Body born of water and the Spirit, seeking God’s will, helping the reign of God to be known on earth, being led to the end of our journey, transfigured for all time into the company of heaven.

Take home some fun in God’s Word, grab a copy of “The Kids’ Bulletin” after each Mass!

“Active” membership at a Parish enables a person to be eligible to sponsor a child for Baptism, to receive financial aid for Catholic Education, to be married in the Parish and to prepare one’s children for the Sacraments. To be an “active” member is to participate in the life of prayer and stewardship in the Parish. All adults over the age of 21, living with their parents or on their own, must register in the Parish to be considered members. The use of the offering envelopes may also help you to qualify for tax incentives. Participating in one or more of the ministries offered by the Parish is proof of the sharing of time and talent for the greater good of our Church Community. So please pick up a free registration form at the Parish Office, or print one from our website at www.stbarnabaslb.org. Stop by the Parish Office and we will be happy to help you! Welcome to St. Barnabas!!!

Readings For The Week

Sunday: Second Sunday of Lent; Daylight Saving Time begins; Girl Scouting Sunday Friday: St. Patrick; Abstinence Saturday: St. Cyril of Jerusalem ST. PATRICK was born in Scotland in the year 387. At sixteen he was captured by pirates and sold as a slave to a chief in Ireland. While tending sheep in the mountains, he prayed constantly. After six years, a voice from heaven told him to go back to his own country. But first he went to Rome, where he became a priest. He was then sent to England where be labored for the Church for some time. He wanted, however, to return to Ireland, and he begged the Pope to send him there. The Pope made him a bishop and then sent him as a missionary to Ireland. One of the pagan kings of Ireland arrested Patrick. When he saw the miracles worked by Patrick, he said, "Tell us about your God. He has given you great power." "There is but one God," answered Patrick, "and three divine Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." Picking up a green shamrock he said, "Even as there are three leaves on this one stern, so there are three Persons in one God." He was allowed to preach the new Faith everywhere in Ireland.

FINANCIAL NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS Sisters and Brothers in Christ - The first half of the 2016 - 2017 fiscal year was positive from a financial and community perspective. The Parish continues on a favorable trajectory with the Statement of Activities reflecting net income of $72,458.

It must be noted that in a comparison to the first half of the previous fiscal year the Church financial statements were not as strong, however the previous year’s numbers were exceptional whereas this year they are more normalized. The previous year’s income was assisted by several large donations and the expenses were less due to deferring maintenance. When comparing the Sunday Offertory year over year, the collection was down $19,000, or 5.5%.

Although the Sunday collection was lower, the good news is that through careful management of expenses the Offertory Collection was sufficient to pay for all of the Operating Expenses of the Parish. Total Expenses did increase 7%, however the majority of this increase was due to investing in repairs to the facilities and equipment that had been deferred for many years, and also contributing more to the Archdiocesan Assessment.

Our balance sheet as of 12/31/16 reflects $593,000 in operating cash. There are limited short term liabilities; however, the unfunded Accumulated Archdiocesan Assessment of $631,000 is reflected as a long term liability and an off-set to equity. The Accumulated Assessment reflects multiple years of payments owed to the Archdiocese to pay for Parish insurance, Parish pensions, and Archdiocesan overhead. We continue down the path that will make our Parish sustainable, retire the debt, and continue to strengthen our faith community.

We, the Priests, Staff, Finance Council, and Pastoral Council, are deeply grateful for your love and generosity. May God Bless you! Rev. Antony Gaspar

Stewardship For Children Beginning Sunday, March 19, our Parish is initiating a new program for children: “Pennies for the Poor.” The

purpose of this initiative is to instill in our children the spirit of stewardship. One of the best ways to teach children the habit of giving is to offer them the opportunity to place their own contribution in an offertory basket each

week. We invite all our children to prayerfully consider collecting any loose changes (ie. coins, bills), and at each Sunday mass, during the Offertory, they will be invited to come to the altar to place their gifts in a special basket placed in front of the Altar. Again, the goal is to teach the children the joy of giving back to God out of gratitude for all that God has given to them. All of this contribution will be directed towards supporting the poor and orphan children for their various needs. For more info, contact the Parish Office.
