In the last decade, through a combination of closings and mergers, bishops have reduced the number of churches by 1,359 parishes. There are now fewer than 17,800, about the same number there were in 1965. In 1965 Catholics in the US numbered about 48.5 million that were served by nearly 36,000 diocesan priests. By 2016 the number of Catholics had grown to 76.7 million while the number of diocesan priests declined to just under 26,000. While there have been about 500 priests ordained annually in the past decade, this is far short of the number to replace the growing number of priests 65 and over. And the number of Catholics continues to grow. Is there a solution to this problem? Among the various solutions proposed, here are a few: 1. Encourage Catholics to have more children. 2. Encourage parents to pray that their children would

welcome a call to priestly ministry. 3. Restore a stricter, more traditional form of Catholicism

which many think spawned a greater number of priestly vocations.

4. Give priests the option of marrying. 5. Open ordination to women. 6. Permit the ordination of mature, married men, inclding

those who presently serve as deacons.

Numbers 1 & 2 would be a good idea, but flies in the face of the values of the popular culture. Catholics in dioceses like Lincoln, NE and Wichita, KS insist that number 3 is the way to go. Number 4 is a non-starter since there is no tradition in the church for allowing priests to marry once they are ordained. For Number 5, recent Popes have slammed the door shut. Interestingly, Pope Francis addressed Number 6 just this week. In an interview with the German periodical Der Zeit, here’s what the Pope had to say: “The church should study carefully whether it’s possible to ordain mature, married men in view of the shortage of priests.” This is not the first time the Pope has mentioned his openness to considering this option, but in the past he has insisted that it is the responsibility of national bishops’ conferences to make proposals. Curiously no conference has yet to take him up on this despite the declining number of celibate priests. I’ve often wondered why ordinary Catholics, especially where there parishes are being closed or consolidated, don’t ask their bishops to consider this option.

Your will be done Focus These are the four words that embody the Christian challenge: Your will be done.

Act Take a few minutes to reflect on your image of God. Write down the qualities that make up the way you see God. Try to trace each quality back to its roots in your life.

Pray Heavenly Father, I want to find peace that cannot be shaken. You have shown me the path. Help me to live it. I will, with all my effort and energy and intention, go out and try and bring about your will. Help me to surrender to these four words: Your will be done.

LEARN THURS 7:00PM

Every person 14 years of age or older is asked to abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent.

Persons between the age of 18 and 59 (beginning of 60th year) are asked to fast on Good Friday.

When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together do not equal a full meal. You may fast on other days as well as it may serve your Lenten goals.

Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ,” Pope Francis said. “Each life that we encounter is a gift deserving acceptance, respect and love.”

IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO END ABORTION?

The Bible commands us to help “the least of these, my brothers and sisters…” Matthew 25:45.

In our culture of death, no doubt the “least of these our brothers and sisters” are the defenseless, innocent children in the womb who are so incredibly vulnerable. So, here are some ideas of what we can do to make a real difference:

Join or Support the Respect Life Committee in our Parish

Start or Support a Gabriel Project in Your Parish

Meet with or write to your Legislators as a Constituent, Communicating the Catholic Church Position on Life Issues

Support Local Pregnancy Centers by donating Your Time, Talents and Treasure

Tell others about Project Rachel, a Post-Abortion Reconciliation/Counseling Program (Toll Free 888-456-4673)

Pray for Those Who have been involved in Abortion

Pray for the life of all, particularly giving witness outside our local abortion clinics “From the first moment of existence, a human being must be recognized as having the right of a person-among which is the inviolable right of every innocent human being to life.”

HOLY SPIRIT RETREAT DAY Alpha Participants describe their experience

The Spirit has helped me to become strong and passionate about the Church and our Mission.

I had gotten “rusty” on calling on the Spirit. I now know to call on him and feel the Spirit’s presence more closely

I felt a feeling of overwhelming joy when asking the Holy Spirit to come to me.

It was amazing! A very warm feeling came over me. I’ve always felt the feeling but today, I was aware it was the Holy Spirit.

I was overwhelmed, but not agitated. It was a very calm feeling and full of peace.

My faith is better because of ALPHA.

It was an eye opening experience. I felt everyone praying. I sensed that it was deep and personal, yet it was done as a group. Knowing God loves me/us always is an awesome feeling and one I will forever cherish. The Lord is closer to me…speaking to me…AWAKENING me. Like family. The Holy Spirit provided more family members to me today.

ALPHA may not be the only way that allows Christ to draw closer to us, but it is proving to be a proven path towards intentional discipleship for hundreds of people here at St. Andrew’s and millions of people around the world. Our fourth Alpha Course will conclude in a few weeks, but we will be launching another one not long after that. Give Margaret a

call to express your interest in joining us next time.
