    Homily

    Profession of Faith

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

At the words that follow, up to and including and be came man, all bow.

And by the holy spirit, was incarnate of the

    Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

  • Profession of Faith

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Word made Flesh Lord Jesus, you are the WORD,

the “LOGOS”, (but not just the WORD.)

You are the WORD INCARNATE, the WORD made FLESH.

This Advent, You call us to your WORD

for our reflection and our prayer. But you also call us to your FLESH, Your action and presence and life

    in the EUCHARIST.

In life you call us to live your WORD and to become your FLESH,

Incarnate in the world; Becoming what we receive:

    Your Body broken and shared.

Emmanuel, God-with-us, You are the WORD,

    the WORD MADE FLESH.

Become incarnate in us that we might SPEAK and BE your WORD

    to a waiting world. AMEN.

  • Salt for the Week

Winter is a time for “comfort food.” It seems everyone has one or two. Ours were potato soup and goulash. Easy, cheap and always associated with good times around the table. Our words from sacred scripture this week are “Give

comfort,” (Is 40:1). But these words had a much different meaning when they were first spoken! Isaiah reminded a people who had literally lost everything of the promises God had made to them. Maybe we’re not so far off here in 2020… For sure we have our own challenges, valleys, mountains and rough spots in life. We live in a kind of wasteland of toxic viruses, political animosity, isolationism, uncharitable behaviors and fear. And here is God (always) saying “Comfort, give comfort to my people.” Like the early church, we are called to be “People of the Way.” We are called this Advent, and all days, to prepare a path, a way that is different. We let go of the past (ours and others) in order to be a source of comfort and compassion to those in need, to become the Word made flesh. And in that there is great comfort.

THE WORD: “Give comfort.” (IS 40:1)

    Advent II Adult Reflection

    1. What do you think the prophet Isaiah means by “giving comfort”? Read further on in that passage…what are examples of comfort?

    2. Does everyone deserve comfort? Why? Why not?

    3. Can you think of a time when someone gave YOU comfort? What was the situation? Who gave you comfort? What did they do? How did you feel afterwards?

    4. Has God ever given you comfort? What did it look/feel like?

    5. How does God comfort people? 6. What are ways in which we can be of comfort

to others? 7. Why is it sometimes tough giving comfort? 8. Do we have to know or like those in need of

    comfort? Why?

THIS WEEK: I will find someone in need and be a source of comfort to them. I will also thank someone who has been a comfort to me.
