READINGS FOR THE WEEK

GLENDALE, ARIZONA PAGE 3

A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human un-derstanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Je-sus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was re-vealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

For parents registering their children for the 2019-2020 school year, please note: In order to receive the school’s reduced Catholic Tuition Rate, your pastor must determine whether your family meets the criteria set by your parish for registered, active, participating members. The definition of registered, active, and participating varies by parish, but usually includes attending Mass regularly as well as con-tributing with an envelope to the offertory along with sup-porting the ministry life of the parish. If you have questions about your family’s status, please contact your pastor di-rectly. (Note: All Diocesan high school students receiving the re-duced tuition rate for the coming year must have their sta-tus verified by their home pastor before they can be regis-tered as Catholic.)

sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If some-one says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Ortho-dox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well-worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal. Notice from the Catholic Schools Office

Parishioners are reminded that the church is the house of the Lord and each of us should conduct our-selves in a way that glorifies and honors HIM who we adore. Our recent remodel included re-finishing the pews. Already there are pen marks and scratches in the wood, and each week, remnants of food are re-moved from pew areas.. Please DO NOT BRING

FOOD or DRINKS (other than water) into the church.

can be prepared for you.

The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for pray-er and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian fami-ly, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mu-tate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firm-ly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling re-sources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in com-mon. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because --

Our Christmas program including the advent tree donations and other donations specific to the Christmas program helped us pro-vide Christmas gift cards for 69 families (including food boxes) which included 326 family members. In addition, Walgreens of Avondale donated toys for the younger children which we were able to distribute as the families came through the food pantry.

During the months of October – December 2018, your donations through the Poor Boxes and the 5th Sunday Collection helped us to serve 231 families (which included 1,056 family members) with 292 emergency food boxes. We thank you for your continued support of your Society of Saint Vincent de Paul conference here at St. Louis the King parish.
