Second-Ponce HistoryIn May of 2006, Second-Ponce hosted the China Bible Exhibit in the Family Life Center. Former President Jimmy Carter cut the ribbon and spoke at a special opening ceremony. Thousands of guests toured artifacts and listened to performances by guest Chinese musicians. The exhibit told about how Christianity has spread across China and how Bibles are printed there. A photo book and a Jade Fish Statue that was given to SPDL for hosting the China Bible Exhibit, are on view in the Heritage Room. This article and display were put together by Church Historian John Roma.

A Word from the Generous ChurchWe are blessed! Since the very beginning, the Lord has blessed Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church. We have a wonderful staff, an active congregation, beautiful facilities and a healthy endowment. This endowment exists because of the generosity of our faithful members. And while we are grateful for their generosity, it requires that we be good stewards of the legacy that they have entrusted to us. It is easy for newcomers, and existing members alike, to assume that, based on the size of our endowments, the Church is self-sufficient and our tithes are not required to fund the needs of the Church. This could not be further from the truth. It is in that vein that we would like to provide you with information and, hopefully, a better understanding of our endowments.

While it is true that Second-Ponce has a sizable endowment, most of these endowments are established with restrictions that limit how the money may be used. Some of our endowments support the physical plant and equipment of the Church. Others support missions, scholarships and benevolence. And in most cases, the initial gift, or corpus, is protected. This means that only the earnings may be spent and spending must be in keeping with the wishes of the grantor. The final restriction requires that none of the income derived from these endowments be used to support the annual operating budget. As a result, the financial responsibility for the day-to-day operations of Second-Ponce falls on each of us. We rely on you! Thank you for your tithes (large and small) and gifts. They allow us to carry out the ministry and mission of this great church. If you have a question or topic you’d like the Generous Church to address, please email us at [email protected]

congratulationS to Dr. charleS QuallS! Charles has completed fifteen years of faithful service at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, earning his second sabbatical study leave. The wonderful coincidence is that this sabbatical leave corresponds with Elizabeth having been honored with a “Retaining the Best” grant after ten years as Head Librarian at Whitfield Academy. These two milestones of service will allow both of them to travel with Nurturing Faith (Baptists Today) and Campbell University Divinity School to Greece and Turkey. The travel group will trace the journeys of Paul and John. This is a great opportunity for learning and renewal. The Qualls will leave on Sunday, May 15 and return to us Sunday, May 29. Join us in celebrating this great opportunity for these good friends.
