A Very Happy New Year from Avery H appy 2011! My name is Avery and as the Featured Pet for this Newsletter I encourage you to read through to learn what Second Chance Humane Society has recently been working on and planning for the near future. This Newsletter also provides ideas on how you can support the region’s only homeless pet shelter and make a difference in the lives of pets like me. Speaking of me…let me share a bit of my story… I am a border collie/lab mix with the typical excess stores of energy and jubilation found in a 9 month puppy. I was rescued by a very kind animal loving couple who were concerned about my injured hind leg that I was trailing along down the highway. They took me to a veterinarian office where xrays showed I definitely had a fracture. The kind couple paid for my initial medical costs to this point but contacted Second Chance as they could not keep me. They provided a nice donation to Second Chance to help with the future surgical costs for my leg. The Shelter staff named me after them in honor of their kindness. Thanks to Second Chance’s Wags and Menace Foundation Medical Fund, and a generous discount from veterinary surgeon Dr. Steve Gentry, they were able to pay for my surgery and have been helping me along in my recovery ever since. This part has been the hardest… can you imagine being young with a great desire to run and jump about and being told to remain inactive for 68 weeks??? Egads!!! Well, I am well along on my road to full recovery, keeping the Shelter staff and volunteers on their toes, but my sweet personality makes it easier on them (they are suckers for an enthusiastic tail wag and grin) I am soon ready for adoption but would first like to thank all the supporters of Second Chance for making this all possible, I can’t imagine what would have become of me otherwise… Second Chance Tails Winter 2011 Newsletter © 2011 Second Chance Humane Society. Announcing the Fourth Annual Wine & Whiskers Carnival! Saturday March 12, 6:00 PM

Ouray County Event Center, Ridgway

L ast year before the third Wine & Whiskers Carnival took place people were wondering how the event

could ever be better than the year before. But when the doors opened and people were bumping shoulder to shoulder to get to the hordes of amazing auction items and decadent food, they started to realize…I think they’ve done it. Then the live auction brought a whole new level of entertainment and opportunity. When the Fashion Show began any fragments of doubt were dis‐carded on the first beat and strut down the runway. The dance to culminate the evening was pure energy and icing on the cake.

Well, we don’t want to get too cocky but…you haven’t seen anything yet. The 2011 Wine & Whiskers will be raising the bar to another level of fabulous food, socializ‐ing, fashion, and extraordinary auctioning… If you want to help make this year more fabulous than ever, we can use your help as a volunteer, model, auc‐tion or food donor. Contact our event planner Lisa Katz ([email protected].) or 626.2273. Otherwise – see you at the show! Tickets are only $40 at the door or in advance at the Second Chance Thrift Shop – price includes delectable food, 2 complimentary drinks, and a night of auctions, fashion, and dancing! All pro‐ceeds directly benefit Second Chance Shelter Programs.

Community Support Comes in all Forms

2 010 found Santa Paws returning not only to Ridgway but also to Telluride for photos with family and pets. We want to thank all of our volunteers who turned into little elves for the occasions and helped make both events very successful! Second Chance has been expanding its outreach with youth as well, as described in the following examples. Shelter Manager Heather Hart, Executive Director Kelly Goodin, shelter dogs Banjo & Pepper recently presented at Mountain School in Telluride during an assembly. The dogs were perfect ambassadors of all the amazing adopt‐able dogs available at Sec‐ond Chance and Heather and Kelly were more than impressed with the com‐passion and interest of the students relative to animal welfare. Second Chance was honored to be named the recipient in the schools “Penny Wars” and Board President Allison Branson was presented with a check in the amount of $576.64 to be used for Second Chance Shelter Programs. Thanks Mountain School!!! Over in Ouray County thirty‐four K‐2 students from Ouray Public Schools gathered donations for Second Chance Shelter pets and visited the Shelter on December 18th as part of a service learning project that their teach‐ers organized. The students were able to learn on many levels from safely interacting with pets to the personal growth of philanthropy. They received coloring books from the Shelter promoting the basics of humane educa‐tion and hopefully will be back to adopt a pet when they are of age… thanks kids! For Emma Wallin’s 9th birthday celebration on January 11th there wasn’t a lot of wrapping paper and ribbon flying around . Emma told her mother Stephanie that she would rather make a difference for the shelter pets at Second Chance this year so she invited shelter dog

Following her party Emma presented the shelter with $35 and hordes of treats and toys! She received a shelter tour and thank you’s from all the shelter pets. Emma teaches us that you are never too young to act generously and selflessly… thanks Emma!!!!

Plea for Homes for Donna Munson’s Remaining Cats

A few months ago Donna Munson’s tragic story was featured on major network television. It has been

over a year and a half since this tragedy in Ouray County left 18 of her rescued pets homeless once more. The producers of the show contacted Second Chance to un‐cover further drama about the incident. We told them that we could not provide that but would love for them to help us find homes for her remaining cats (Lavender, Sheba, & Toffee). They didn’t help us.

The other thing we shared was that although we did not know Donna we did learn after her death that, despite the result of her actions, she was truly an animal lover. In fact many of the 18 pets that we took in to the shelter after her death had been “given” to her by people that found the pets and knew her as an animal lover. She never refused to help an animal. So it is disheartening that 3 of those pets that Donna did not refuse to take in have yet to find a new home since her death. We do not want the shelter to be their last home. And so in this pitch (or you could even call it beg‐ging and pleading) to get them into homes where they can live normal lives again, we are offering to place them into long term foster care with any home that can pro‐vide a nurturing and loving environment. What this means is that we completely understand the reluctance to bring a senior cat into one’s family with the uncertainties of future health issues and medical bills (not to mention questionable life longevity – although there is no guarantee of this for any pet). Thus, Second Chance is willing to cover all medical costs for their life‐times. We will even cover their food costs. We just want them to be in good homes. Please consider fostering one or more (two are particularly bonded and would like to go to a home together) of these lovely, good natured cats who truly deserve a better place to call home than the shelter can provide for them. To close on a lighter note, below is a letter from a won‐derful couple who did adopt one of these cats, we hope it helps you to remember that companion animals give back as much as they receive…

Emma Wallin’s Birthday Gifts

Victoria appeared shy at first, and spent most of the first month under the bed in a back bedroom. Our black and white “tuxedo cat” was not happy with the intruder. The other cat and dog hardly seemed to notice the newcomer. With patience and lots

of petting and food, Victoria learned to trust us. Donna’s cats must have received lots of attention and been well cared for, be‐cause it didn’t take long for Victoria to remember the pleasure of human com‐panionship and make herself at home. She loves to cuddle, and if a human or other animal is not available, she will curl up to a stuffed animal. She enjoys playing with her cat toys. She has brought much pleasure into our home, and rewarded us with love and affection. We are so glad we adopted her.

Shelter News & Grooves

2 010 saw a reduction in number of adoptions over the prior year (317 in ‘09 and 244 in ‘10) This is the first

time that, in the history of Second Chance, adoptions have not increased over the year. We have seen an in‐crease in stray pets that we have been able to reunify with their parents (49 in ’09 and 58 in ’10) and believe in part our micro‐chip program is having a positive impact upon this. We have also, in response to reduced adop‐tions, increased our transfers of pets (0 in ’09 and 28 in ’10) to animal rescue organizations who are having bet‐ter adoption rates than we are. Thus, until adoptions return to their normal pace again ‐which we anticipate happening next year – we will con‐tinue working hard to maintain our ability to rescue as many pets as possible (total animals rescued in 2010 was 321!). It should be noted that we still are able to accept all stray pets found within our duo‐county service region and we still do not euthanize adoptable pets for time or space. We also continue assisting with pets in need from outside of our service region when space permits. And, of course, we offer a plethora of spay/neutered, vacci‐nated, micro‐chipped highly adoptable pets like Claire (above right) for fulfilling your families and lifestyles.

S econd Chance Humane Society’s pet store offers a convenient option and prices that can’t be beat for

your pet supply needs. Save energy and time by pur‐chasing that much needed item or gift for the pet lover right here in Ridgway and know that your purchase di‐rectly benefits the wonderful pets in our Shelter. Please visit the shop at our Second Chance Humane Soci‐ety Shelter during regular operating hours, Monday through Sunday from 10am until 5pm. We offer a great selection of high quality products and will be happy to place special orders as needed.

Thrift Shop Grows Green

W ith October came the completion of a series of projects to improve the Second Chance Thrift

Shop building and property. Many of the improvements were necessary to protect the building from flooding, while others were implemented to increase retail capac‐ity, improve donation processing and improve the overall visitor experience and flow. One additional, but very exciting, improvement was the addition of a solar electric system to the facility. Highway and neighboring property drainage changes im‐plemented since 2006 have increased the influx of spring and summer monsoon runoff, and resulting flooding, onto Thrift Shop property. Projects necessary to protect the building included the addition of drainage and land‐scaping features, paving of the parking lot and an effec‐tive drainage system. These improvements could not have been made without the cooperation of our neighbors, Adam and Cristin Johnson, and the Town of Ridgway. Donated items are the sole source of revenue generated by our Thrift Shop. Historically, our limited building size has denied us the opportunity to accept donations of large items, like furniture and appliances, or resulted in having to price them low to assure a same day sale. Fur‐ther, donations received by the Thrift Shop are often sea‐sonal. For example, clothes and skis donated during spring cleaning must be stored in a rented facility until fall for sale. The addition of a 400 sq ft storage building was made to address both of these issues, reduce oper‐ating costs, and improve retail capacity. For both the drainage improvement and storage building projects it is important to understand that these efforts were funded by generous grants totaling $40,000. Grants from the Faraway Foundation and a foundation that prefers to remain anonymous were made with the condition that the funds only be used for Thrift Shop im‐provements. Income earned by the Thrift Shop contrib‐utes 70% of the total needed to operate our Shelter and prevention programs. As such, both foundations recog‐nized the opportunity for them to leverage grant funding to enable Thrift Shop revenue to maintain pace with op‐erating cost demands. Internal changes to the Thrift building focused upon im‐

proving customer and workflow, improving donation turn‐over and sales volume. These projects could not have been possible without the generous donation of time and talent from Robert Burns, Bill Byrd, Patrick Herron and George Weickert. A welcomed step toward sustainability and Second Chance’s commitment to our environment was enabled by Leif Juell and Jill Markey of Alternative Power Enterprises through the installation of a photovoltaic generating sys‐tem. The system is comprised of rooftop mounted solar cell units and a 2.3 kWatt inverter. Beyond helping us to be greener, system output is projected to provide a nearly $500 per year savings in ongoing energy costs. Equipment and installation costs were 100% offset by energy rebates and a very generous donation from Leif and Jill.

Second Chance Success Stories

W e love to hear about our “Second Chance alum’s” – after they have gone home to their new families. It

really makes what we do come full circle and feel so worthwhile when we hear the great results on all the vari‐ous pets that we had committed to helping over the years. Pets that were harder to adopt because of emotional or behavioral issues – that just needed a secure loving home to thrive and become themselves in – we especially appre‐ciate hearing about, such as the one of Nala (above right) who was in the Shelter for many months before finding her true love: I just wanted to update you on Nala. She's amazing. I love

her and she's definitely a part of the family. We go on 4 mile daily walks in the canyons around the Four Corners. She loves to explore, but definitely keeps her eye on me. Her relationship with my other little dog, Mr. Darcy, is so cute. They clean each other's faces. Thank you for rescuing her so that she could be a part of my life. Thank you,

‐ Prudence Brady

Survey

W e have compiled a survey with the intention of in‐creasing our understanding of community percep‐

tions, interests and concerns relative to our effectiveness as an organization and animal welfare issues in general. We are hoping to extend our awareness of how our pro‐grams and services impact our community and how we can make improvements that will forward our mission: Saving Animal’s Lives and Promoting Responsible Pet Parenting & the Human‐Animal Bond. From very humble origins Second Chance has steadily de‐veloped into a strong and healthy organization with a meaningful purpose. As we prepare for another successful year of pursuing this purpose we have been assessing what has or has not worked and how can we make im‐provements? What changes should we make? How is the animal sheltering industry changing across the nation? Is the community ready to support a new shelter? Is there a community awareness of all the services that we provide? To help us answer some of these questions we ask you to visit our website at www.adoptmountainpets.org and click on the “community survey” link. It should only take about 5 minutes at most to complete and your participation will make a difference in furthering our understanding of our resulting impact. We are very hopeful of receiving a large participation rate, please help us realize this goal.

More Green Goodies from Second Chance

U nlike what Kermit the Frog says, it’s easy to be green at Second Chance. Not only are our great solar pan‐

els generating electricity at the Thrift Shop, but we also offer recycling opportunities for metal such as aluminum cans, folding aluminum lawn chairs, old TV and Internet dishes, copper wire and pipe, as well as brass fixtures. Recla Metals in Montrose currently pays 60 cents per pound for aluminum, up to $2.75 per pound for copper (depends on type and quality) and from $0.60 to $1.65 for brass. The benefits of recycling with us can add up quickly to benefit our homeless animals. Our wonderful dedicated volunteer Richard Wo‐jciechowski picks up recyclables twice a month from the Thrift Shop to transport them to Montrose. Perhaps you have seen “Recycle Man” driving down the road with a full load of scrap metal in his pickup. Richard began volun‐teering with Second Chance this spring to help us with re‐cycling as well as transporting large donations to the Thrift Shop. Thus, Recycle Man has helped us to increase both recycling and donation revenues – Thanks Richard! And of course the Thrift Shop offers other opportunities for community members to go green by recycling all your

not quite right Christmas gifts, last year’s toys, clothes and other household items. As always the Thrift Shop requests that you donate only clean resalable items in good repair, i.e. no missing buttons, broken zippers, rips, stains or tears. Thank you for being green and helping homeless pets!

Letter from the Board

S econd Chance Humane Society was founded as and continues to be a grassroots organization. From our

inception seventeen years ago to today we rely upon com‐munity input, involvement, support, and partnerships to carry out our daily operations. We have been successful at what we do because we are fortunate to be located amongst communities that care. Through our diligent stewardship we have earned the trust of the communities that we serve throughout San Miguel and Ouray Counties. Members of our communities, and those who visit our region, recognize Second Chance as an organization based upon open and direct communication, transparency, and a

respect for diverse viewpoints and opinions. These have always been core qualities to this organization and as such, as we make final preparations for the signifi‐cant project of raising money for a new shelter, we feel a great need to hear from you. We ask you to please take the time to complete our survey (detailed on p. ) because it matters to us what you have to say. If you would prefer to talk in person give us a call or shoot us an email so we can arrange to speak. If you have questions please let us answer them.

The leadership team at Second Chance has been working our tails off as we prepare to make our goals and the com‐munity’s dreams happen. 2011 looks to be a big year for us and we hope you can participate at a level that fits for you. Our homeless pets are depending upon all of us to do what we can. More than ever your monetary dona‐tions, volunteerism, and support of any kind are needed and requested.

On behalf of the Second Chance Humane Society Board of Directors,

Thank you for all that you do! Kelly Goodin, Executive Director

Thank You 2010 Supporters & Friends

A lthough Second Chance derives 70% of its operating cost from earned income (Thrift Shop sales and event proceeds), we could not fulfill our mission without the generous support received from our many donors. During 2011 donations and Friends of Second Chance dues amounted to $28,307. Government support totaled $17,265, while support from our local businesses equaled $4,195. Grant funding to support our Community Out‐reach & Education, Mobile Adoption, Feral Cat and Spay/Neuter Assistance Programs totaled $50,308.
