SPOTLIGHT on ISAIAH SWIFT

One of our 900 Men Strong Scholarship Recipients

Isaiah is from a single parent home, a second year Norfolk State University student studying

business finance, a Maury High School graduate, and one of our 2016 900 Men Strong

Scholarship recipients.

Isaiah, while carrying a full class load and maintaining a high academic standard, has written a

book about his life and how he was able to succeed and obtain.

Isaiah is a 20 year old author, public speaker and serial entrepreneur. He has a passion for

inspiring today’s students in high school (Gen Z and

Millennials). He wants to share everything he learned while

he was in high school so that students coming behind him will

be better prepared for the real world after they graduate.

Isaiah capitalized on almost every opportunity that his

community afforded him. He was a member of the National

Honor Society, DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of

America), FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America),

National Society of High

School Scholars and even

managed his school’s student-run credit union! Isaiah embraced

every aspect of high school. While earning various scholarships,

grants and prestigious awards, he was able to go to college debt-

free.

His book, Unlock Your Greatness is available on Amazon.

Rev. Dr. Veronica E. Haynes

WHATZ UP FOR KINGDOM KIDZ

JESUS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

During the Months of April and May

the lessons in Children’s Church and Bible

Study will be focused on the post-resurrection

appearances of Jesus. The gospels of Luke

and John describe at length Jesus’

appearances to His followers during the 40

days prior to His ascension into heaven.

We will explore the gospels to learn

about Jesus’ appearance before “doubting

Thomas” and the other disciples as well as

travel along the road to Emmaus as Luke

describes His encounter with a pair of His

followers. We will also explore Jesus’ last

recorded miracle in which He overwhelmed

the disciples’ fishing nets with a huge catch of

fish.

Our study of this portion of biblical

history will conclude with the ascension of

Jesus into heaven to be seated at the right

hand of God and the command of the Great

Commission. The children will gain an

understanding that although Jesus completed

His earthly ministry for the time being, He is

yet alive and has something for each of us to

do as ambassadors for Him.

Please collaborate with us as a family

as we discover the gospel truths found in

Luke and John. Extend the discussions the

children have during our time with them at

church when they return to their homes with

the Good News of the gospel.

Unit 1: Follow in My Ways

Lesson Title: Guess Who?

Printed Text: Luke 24:1-12; 30-35

Unifying Principle People often question the

promises of their leaders. How can they come

to have assurance in the midst of doubt? In the

breaking of bread and making Himself known

to His disciples, the risen Christ kept his

promises.

The Ministry of

Nurture and

Discipleship is all that

we do as a congregation

to stimulate lifelong learning and lasting

spiritual growth and Christian commitment.

It includes everything that we do as a

congregation to provide, promote, and pay for

a ministry of sound spiritual learning. It is

our commitment to Christian discipleship

development.

Discipleship is taking on the character and

nature of Jesus Christ and becoming a learner

of His ways, words, and will. Christian

nurture is the process of helping persons to

grow in such a way that they are formed in the

very image of Jesus Christ.

Resurrection Sunday: A Great Time

for Teaching* Matthew 28:19-20

ike Kimberly S. Credit, I can recall how my

seven siblings and I would look with great

anticipation to “Easter Sunday.” We knew

we were going to get new “Easter clothes”

and bolo bats with fake grass and jelly beans on

them, covered with Saran wrap to hold it all in

place; and if we were lucky, we would get a

chocolate covered “Easter egg” or “an Easter

bunny.” The down side was if you got your “Easter

clothes” dirty, a whipping was imminent. Mom

dressed us girls alike, and it appeared that she had

two sets of twins. At that time, Jesus’ resurrection

was nowhere around our hearts, because we did not

know that it should be.

We went to Sunday School every Sunday

(that was a requirement in the Stancel household);

but I do recall being taught about the meaning of

Easter and Jesus resurrection. In her article, Credit

says that intricate details are given about Christmas

and traditional Watch Night services, but when it

comes to the Resurrection, “we only shout about

Jesus being raised from the tomb, hardly ever

explaining just what that means for humanity.”

She adds, “Maybe it is the time really to

explain from beginning to end why this day is so

important. Maybe it's a day that we should not rush

to individual homes to enjoy our hams, collard

greens, and cake, but make it a day of teaching

followed by family and community fellowship.

Perhaps the black church can move away from our

same old annual Easter traditions and use

Resurrection Sunday as a time to truly resurrect the

life, the love, the atonement provided by the One

we know as our Lord and Savior. Both the

traditional festive celebratory service can be

combined with an intentional teaching approach to

help explain to those who come only twice a year

what the excitement is really all about and how they

can benefit.”

Time for Teaching." The Living Pulpit April 2012; 21 (2).

The Ministry of Social Justice is our

commitment to living out the Great

Commandment of Jesus Christ, "And you

shall love the Lord your God...this is the first

commandment. And the second, You shall

love your neighbor as yourself. There is no

other commandment greater than these (Mark

12:30-31). Through the social ministries of

the church we seek to live out a clear biblical

mandate for "biblical righteousness and

justice." We seek to be a living witness of

God's grace and love for all of humanity. This

ministry is devoted to serving as the

congregation's voice in the areas of social

justice, social concern, social change and

social ministry. Through this ministry, we

seek to be visibly present in the community

where we are planted. It is our means for

serving as God's agent of social

transformation. Social Ministry is our work on

the Home Mission field.

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology is

all that we do as a congregation to engage the

senses through the use of multi-media

technology and in our worship. Through this

ministry we seek to create a dynamic

experience in worship through the effective

use of audio, video, lighting, and the latest

advances in music technology. The Ministry

of Innovation and Technology provides the

platform for the church to engage the culture

through the use of Social Media portals of

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social

media channels. The Ministry of Innovation

and Technology utilizes social and communal

blogs as a means for reaching the larger

community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Through this ministry we develop, update,

and fully operate our website and mobile app,

two of the most important outreach and

informational tools.

18 “Do not call to mind the former things,

Or ponder things of the past. 19 “Behold, I will do something new,

Now it will spring forth;

Will you not be aware of it?

I will even make a roadway in the wilderness,

Rivers in the desert. 20 “The beasts of the field will glorify Me,

The jackals and the ostriches,

Because I have given waters in the wilderness

And rivers in the desert,
