The materials from this set of notes are to be used solely for educational
purposes in Teck Whye Secondary School. They are not to be sold or
distributed. The resources that have been used in this set of notes are
1. http://www.technologystudent.com
2. Ripley St. Thomas School ---http://resmat.blogspot.com
The objectives of this course are
1. Pupils should be able to appreciate and experience the design process
by understanding the design task, setting relevant design
specifications and generating interactive ideas.

Design and Technology Design Module for Sec 1 (2009)
Design & Technology is a subject that will help you to discover more about
the world that we live in. You will learn how things are designed to meet
peoples need, how they function, how technology is involved to enhance the
functions, and appreciate the value of the balance of aesthetic and function
as good design.
Designers go through a process in order to arrive at an appropriate solution
to meet the needs of the target users. We called this the Design Process.
A lot of thinking and reflection is done throughout the entire process to
achieve a good end result.
Design Process
A common design processused by designers to help them to designsystematically is shown in the flow chart below.
Compiled by Mr. Sebastian Tiong 3
Do you notice that there are arrows
forward and backwards throughout the
entire process? These arrows show that
designers will constantly reflect upon the
previous stages and use the researched
information to make sound decisions for
their design.

This process is also a very useful model to help us with our school projects
irregardless of the subjects or CCA areas. In Design and Technology, we will
further break down each of the 5 stages into smaller sections to help us
simplify the task.

Do the terms found in the last flow chart look very foreign to you? Dont
worry! We will understand and appreciate the Design Process better as we
embarked on a real-life project from this point forth. Your very
knowledgeable and approacheable teachers will facilitate your learning and
help you along the way. This means that you will play a major role inproducing creative yet appropriate ideas and making important decisions in
designing a solution for your task. You will need to constantly reflect upon
your research and previous work to make sound decisions for your designs. I
repeat your teachers will guide you along, but they will not be making
decisions for you. Remember this, you will now be the most person in making
decision for your solutions. However, mark these words, Choices will lead to
consequences. The consequences will either turn out to be positive or
negative, depending on the quality of your thoughts and actions. You will be
assessed according to these.
Have fun and enjoy the learning process!

Project: The Handheld Electronic
Device Charging Station
Design and make a Handheld Electronic
Device charging station that can hold atleast 1 device for recharging purposes. Your
solution should not exceed 150 x 150 x 3 of
cardboard.

Design Activity 1: Analyze this!
Work in pairs. Look at the Charging Station in the picture below and
answer the following questions in the space provided.
1) How does it work? Explain with evidence based on the features of the
object.
2) Suggest others how the charging station can be used.

Design Specifications
Design Specifications are conditions, criteria, directions that will help us to
stay focused when designing. Points such as; safety, general size, what it will
do (its functions), general properties of the materials needed, who it is for(eg children), circuit requirements and other points you feel are important.
Below are sample design specifications on an Infant teething product.
Weight - The product should not exceed 0.001kg in weight.
Size - The product should at least 60 x 60 x 10. (Dimensions are in mm
only.)
Material - The product should be made of a soft material, so that babies can
bite while teething.Appearance The product should have more than 1 colours (especially red
and black), so that babies be attracted to it.
Safety The product should be smooth in texture. There should not be any
rounded corners.
Comfort for user There should be a non-slip grip to help the babies to
Hold it properly
Storage The product should be stored in areas not exposed to excessive
sunlight or heat.
Performance The product should be able to attract the attention of babiesby rattling.
Maintenance The product should be easily cleaned by rinsing with water
and dried quickly.
