Last season, the Cortland women’s basketball team leaned heavily on a pair of four-year starters and career 1,000-point scorers on its way to a 23-5 overall record, a 15-1 regular-season mark in the SUNYAC and an appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs. In 2006-07, role players and newcomers will need to step up their play in order for the team to remain one of the elite in the conference and earn a return trip to the postseason.

Ninth-year head coach Jeannette Yeoman returns seven players from the 2005-06 team and welcomes six new names to the roster. While three starters are gone from last season, plenty of talent remains.

Junior forward Sara Cavanaugh is the first name that comes to mind. Cavanaugh is a complete player with all of the tools to have a dominating season. She earned second team D3hoops.com All-East and All-ECAC Upstate New York and first team All-SUNYAC honors last season and was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team. Cavanaugh averaged 13.3 points per game and led the team with 8.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. She also contributed 35 assists, 23 steals and led the team with a 40.8 three-point field goal percentage as she connected on 42-of-103 attempts.

Joining Cavanaugh in the front court is sophomore Ali Canale, who started all 28 games as a freshman. Canale shot 50.4 percent from the field and averaged 5.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. She also added 41 assists, 19 blocks and 31 steals, proving that she’s a versatile player on both ends of the court.

A trio of senior captains will be relied upon for their leadership and experience. Andrea Wilkinson saw action in all 28 games in 2005-06. She averaged 2.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while recording 18 steals and 22 assists. Kerry Costello was an important reserve last season, appearing in 24 games off the bench. She averaged 2.3 points and is a threat from beyond the arc, making 37.5 percent of her shots from three-point range. Erin Dabe is in her second year with the program. She played in 27 games as a junior with two starts. A physical player, Dabe gives Yeoman a strong presence on the frontline.

A pair of sophomore guards returns this season. Maggie Byrne was an honorable

mention All-SUNYAC selection last season after averaging 7.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per

game in 28 contests. She led the squad with 45 treys, which means her outside shooting as well as her ball handling will be key assets to the team this season. Kristin Ciccone gained valuable experience in 2005-06, earning playing time in 16 games. She registered one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios on the team.

Of Yeoman’s six new players, one is a junior and five are freshmen. Brie Simmons played three seasons of club basketball at Cortland prior to making the varsity roster. Jessica Laing was named the New York State Class D Player of the Year at South Kortright as she led her team to a state title last season. A four-time team MVP, Laing has proven her talent on the high school level and now must make the transition to the college ranks.

Brittany Martin was a three-time team MVP at Allegany-Limestone and guided her team to back-to-back Section Four titles. Martin has good size at the guard spot and may also be utilized in the front court. Danielle DeLay was a four-year starter at Clarkstown North, earning honorable mention all-county honors as a senior. A true forward in high school, DeLay may be used more as a guard at Cortland.

Rachel Rabbin joins the Red Dragons after running the team as a senior at Guilderland High last season. Miranda Lustig was a three-year starting point guard at Patchogue-Medford and earned all-league honors twice.

There are still plenty of questions to be answered for the 2006-07 Cortland women’s basketball team. Who will fill the shoes of the departed starters? Who will rise up and become the team leaders? Who will make the most of earning more minutes? Questions with answers to follow after the first tip of the season.

Jeannette YeomanHead Coach

Jeannette Yeoman enters her ninth season as head coach of SUNY Cortland’s women’s basket-ball program in 2006-07. Cort-land’s career win leader, Yeoman has an impressive record of 180-45 (.800) in eight seasons with the Red Dragons.

Yeoman’s Cortland teams have won at least 19 games in seven of her eight campaigns. Last year’s squad finished 23-5, won the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular-season title and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III tour-nament. Yeoman was named the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the third time.

In the 2003-04 season, Yeoman was named the SU-NYAC Coach of the Year. She led the Red Dragons to a 25-5 record, the league title and the NCAA Division III tournament. Cortland won its opening-round NCAA game and finished tied for 17th nationally. In 2004-05, her squad finished 19-7 and tied for third at the SU-NYAC tournament.

In all, Yeoman has led Cortland to three SUNYAC tournament titles and five NCAA playoff showings. In 2000-01, the Red Dragons finished with a school-best 27-3 record, won the SUNYAC regular-season crown and made the program’s first NCAA “Sweet 16” appearance since 1992. Cortland was 26-2 in 1999-2000 and 25-3 in 1998-99. In both of those seasons, the Red Dragons won the SUNYAC regular season and tournament titles and received a bye into the second round of the NCAA playoffs. Yeoman was the SUNYAC co-Coach of the Year in the 1999-2000 season.

She led the Red Dragons to a 19-8 record in 2001-02 and a 16-12 mark in 2002-03. The Red Dragons advanced to the SUNYAC tournament championship game six straight years from 1999-2004 and seven times overall.

Yeoman was named the Basketball Coaches Associa-tion of New York (BCANY) Coach of the Year in 2000, 2001 and 2004. She is currently a member of the BCA-NY’s Board of Directors.

Prior to her arrival at Cortland, Yeoman served as the head women’s basketball coach at Alfred University for four seasons. She led the Saxons to a 16-9 mark in 1996-97, the second best record in the program’s his-tory and its first winning season in nine years. The team qualified for the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs. She also served as Alfred’s Senior Women’s Administrator for two years.

Yeoman was an assistant coach at Northern Michi-gan University for four years prior to Alfred. During that stretch, the Wildcats had a combined 85-31 record and made two trips to the NCAA Division II playoffs. Yeoman also served as a graduate assistant coach at Shippens-burg (Pa.) University.

A 1990 alumna of St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind., Yeoman graduated as the school’s all-time lead-ing scorer with 2,280 points. As a senior she was a first team All-American and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Player of the Year as she led the Pumas to a 28-2 record and the NCAA Division II “Elite Eight.” She also led the team to 27-4 marks and the NCAA playoffs in both her sophomore and junior seasons. She was induct-ed into the GLVC Hall of Fame in May 2004.

The Lafayette, Ind., native scored at least 50 points on two occasions, including a school and GLVC record 51 points along with 22 assists against Lewis University as a senior. A member of St. Joseph’s Athletic Hall of Fame, Yeoman was ranked 13th on the NCAA Division II career scoring chart, entering the 2005-06 season.

Chrissy DeHayGraduate Assistant Coach

Chrissy DeHay enters her first year as a graduate assistant coach on the Cort-land women’s basketball staff in 2006-07 after a four-year playing career with the Red Dragons.

DeHay, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the College, played in 95 games in her career. She averaged 2.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game and registered 67 blocked shots.

A native of Clay, N.Y., DeHay is a 2002 graduate of Cicero-North Syracuse, where she was a three-year start-er on the basketball team and earned all-league honors all three seasons.

About SUNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, approximately 7,500 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Memorial Geological Field Station on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed fifth nationally out of 438 colleges and universities in the 2005-06 all-sport United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup Division III standings. The award was formerly known as the Sears Directors’ Cup from 1995-2002 and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors’

Cup in the 2002-03 school year. Cortland is the only New York school and one of only six nationwide to finish in the top 20 each of the last 11 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 13 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The newly-constructed on-campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena, racquetball and squash courts, a wrestling room, modern athletic training facilities and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.
