In today’s society, effective energy management isa crucial issue for the success of any business. AnEnergyManagementSystem(EnMS)wouldbe the idealsolution–EnMShelpsyourorganisation in theprecisionmanagement of energy. In conjunction with enhancingyourenergyefficiency,anEnMScancutcostsandreduceGreenhouseGas (GHG)emissions providing youwith acompetitive advantage of your assurance to the marketthat you effectively manage energy and demonstratescommitmenttoyourcustomers.

Why is EN16001 gaining traction in Singapore? TheInter-Ministeral Committee on Sustainable Development(IMCSD) was set up in 2009 to develop a nationalframeworkandkeystrategiesforSingapore’ssustainabledevelopment. The blueprint report highlighted severalgoalsforenergyefficiency,oneofwhichis:

ReduceSingapore’senergyintensity(perdollarGDP)by20% from2005 levelsby2020,andby35% from2005levelsby2030.

ISO 50001 which will replace EN16001:2009 Energymanagement systems. EN 16001:2009 (E) is currentlytheEuropeanstandardforEnergymanagementand3rdpartysystemscertification.

ISO 50001:2011 specifies requirements forestablishing, implementing, maintaining and improvingan energy management system, whose purpose is toenableanorganizationtofollowasystematicapproachinachievingcontinualimprovementofenergyperformance,includingenergyefficiency,energyuseandconsumption.

ISO 50001:2011 specifies requirements applicable toenergy use and consumption, including measurement,documentation and reporting, design and procurementpractices for equipment, systems, processes andpersonnelthatcontributetoenergyperformance.

ISO50001:2011appliestoallvariablesaffectingenergyperformancethatcanbemonitoredandinfluencedbytheorganization.ISO50001:2011doesnotprescribespecificperformancecriteriawithrespecttoenergy.

ISO 50001:2011 has been designed to be usedindependently, but it can be aligned or integrated with othermanagementsystems.

ISO50001:2011isapplicabletoanyorganizationwishingtoensurethatitconformstoitsstatedenergypolicyandwishing to demonstrate this to others, such conformitybeing confirmedeither bymeansof self-evaluationandself-declaration of conformity, or by certification of theenergymanagementsystembyanexternalorganization.

ISO 50001:2011 also provides, inAnnexA, informativeguidanceonitsuse.
