President’s Message
Shamrockers,
As many of you are aware, we re-ceived news last May from The Co-lumbus Convention Center that the use of Battelle Hall on March 17, 2020
was contracted with a national organi-zation, as well as a large block of hotel rooms for a two-week time frame which includes Tuesday, March 17, 2020. It was explained to us that na-tional organizations take precedent over local organizations due to the in-flux of revenue generated to the City of Columbus, local businesses, and hotels. We were also advised by the
Columbus Convention Center that this situation is likely to happen again in the years to come. As challenging as this news was to hear, we understand that they are a business and this deci-sion makes fiscal sense for the CCC.
“Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I'll show you someone who has overcome ad-versity” - Lou Holtz, Football Coach at the University of Notre Dame (1986–1996).
I will also add that the folks represent-ing the CCC were very professional, kind, courteous, and partnered together with us for several months of meetings to help come up with a great solution.

Chaplain’s Comments
Dear Shamrock
Club members and
friends,
October begins the
season of Autumn –
for sure my favorite
season of the year:
pumpkins, falling
leaves, hot and cold cider, bringing jack-
ets out of storage, planning Halloween
parties, etc. it’s a beautiful time of the
year. It also reminds us that the holiday
season is fast approaching: notice the
Thanksgiving and Christmas decoration
in all the stores? Sad that the commer-
cialization of all this seems to take prec-
edence over the actual meaning and ob-
servance of these blessed holidays. Ac-
tivities at the Shamrock Club also con-
tinue! Please check the Seanachai for
more information.
October is also the month of the Holy
Rosary. St. Paul VI in his encyclical
Marialis cultus referred to the Rosary as
a form of contemplative prayer. When I
read this years ago, it struck a familiar
chord in my heart. The Rosary, prayed
with devotion has the blessed effect of
bringing us into union with God through
the intercession of the Blessed Mother.
As we repeat the words of the Angel
Gabriel and her cousin Elizabeth – and

“The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” – Vince Lombardi, Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers (1959–1967).
With that being said, The Executive Board, Club Manag-er, and Committee Chairpersons, have been tirelessly working on an alternative plan since May of 2019, and after many long hours of meetings and endless emails/phone calls, we have agreed upon the best possible schedule of events for the 2020 Green Season. With the full confidence and support of the Officers and Execu-tive Board, I am excited to announce that Proclamation Day will be held on Friday March 13, 2020. Our tradi-tional Proclamation Day events (Mass at St. Christopher, Get Behind the Badge Breakfast at Byrnes’s Pub – where The Irish Meet, Proclamations & Recognitions at City Hall) will culminate with the painting of the Sham-rocks at Broad & High. We will then convene at Exhibit Hall D in the Columbus Convention Center for the 2020 Irish Family Reunion. All the fun, fellowship and enter-tainment you have come to expect from the Irish Family Reunion will start just after noon and run until 7pm on Friday March 13, 2020. Tuesday, March 17, 2020 will kick off with the tradition-al procession to church followed by mass and the 2020 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Shamrock Club will wel-come the entire City of Columbus to join us after the parade visiting some of our usual stops (Dempsey’s, The Main Bar, Pub Mahone, and Tara Hall) and then to cele-brate with the Central Ohio Irish at 60 W. Castle Rd with an entire fun filled day of craic and entertainment! We are still working out the details of the church/mass and the parade route so we will have more information in the very near future.
“Teamwork requires some sacrifice up front; people who work as a team have to put the collective needs of the group ahead of their individual interests.” - Patrick Lencioni, American Writer.
Please know that it is my sincerest desire to honor our history, our traditions, our bylaws, and to bring you the very best possible Green Season in 2020, all the while being fiscally responsible keeping in mind the best inter-ests for the good of the whole. I am thankful to the Of-ficers and the Executive Board for all their hard work in reaching this collective decision, and to our Past Presi-dent’s & members for your patience, understanding and unconditional support along the way. I am looking for-ward to celebrating and sharing this new experience with all of you!
Honor the past and pay forward,
George Doyle Gamber - Shamrock Club of Columbus - President 2020 Email: [email protected]
then ask Mary to pray for us now and at the hour of
our death, this is the beauty of the Rosary. Meditating
on the mysteries of the Rosary help us remember the
life and active presence of Jesus, still with us today
and until the end of time. Tradition tells us that the
Rosary was ‘the poor person’s breviary’ in that it gave
the ordinary person, many who could not read or
write an, opportunity to share in the prayer of the
Church: 150 Hail Mary’s for 150 Psalms (a whole
Rosary is made up of joyful, sorrowful, and glorious
mysteries – and don’t forget the luminous mysteries
given to us by St. John Paul II.) I clearly remember
the ads on tv during the ‘50’s when Fr. Patrick Peyton
encouraged us to “Pray the Rosary.” So, if your ro-
sary has fallen into disuse, maybe it’s time to find it
and pray it!
During this month, I’d also remind all of us to pray for
our country in these difficult times. Regardless of your
political persuasion, we would do well to remember
the words of our pledge of allegiance: that we are one
nation under God, with liberty and justice for all. It is
always a good idea for us to pray regularly for our
country that God in his goodness will watch over and
protect our country, and give all of us the grace we
need to work together for the common good of all.

If you are interested in becoming one of the Shamrock’s “Best” Chili Cookers---enter the 10th Annual Chili Cook-off that is held during Harvest Day, Saturday, October 12th.
You will need to have your Chili at the Club no later than 12:30- Judging will start at 1:00. It is best to bring your chili in a crock-pot to keep it hot.
There are two main categories Mild and Spicy. The judges will be awarding points in the following areas:
Chili will be judged according to 4 criteria.
Chili will be rated on a scale of zero to 5 in each of the 4 categories-
1. Aroma – Chili should smell good. This also indicates what’s in store when you taste it. 2. Consistency – Chili must have a good ratio between sauce and meat. It should not be dry, watery, grainy, lumpy, or
greasy. 3. Taste – Taste, above all else, taste is the most important factor. The taste should consist of a combination of meat,
spices, etc. with no particular ingredient being dominant. 4. Name- Name is unique and creative
A “People Choice” will also be given. Members can cast their votes for their favorite mild and spicy.
The Winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Spicy and Mild as well as People Choice) will be announced approximately 4:00 right before the music, The Ladies of Longford begin.

Irish History
I have been a classroom teacher for 31 years and a storyteller or seanchai for over 15
years following a grand tradition in the Irish culture that so many in the local Irish-
American Groups proudly profess to promote especially about March 17…but do you, in
Columbus’ Irish-American Community really promote all aspects of Irish Culture. I
would question that I and I will tell you why.
Recently I attended a day-long storytelling event in Dayton Ohio and during a
conversation I laughingly commented to my fellow storytellers that I doubted if the Irish-
Americans in Central Ohio really regarded storytelling as part of our Irish culture because
all they seem to want to do when they gathered was to talk to each other and sometimes
not even listening to what the other was saying. A woman standing near overheard me
and turned to several others saying, “She’s right, listen to her.” She then went on to tell
the others that when she accompanied her husband to some Irish groups in North-East
Ohio she noticed the same thing happening in those groups too. H-m-m-m-m I mused to
myself, this must be catching…few of them appreciate storytelling as an art-form that is a
valuable part of their ethnic identity.
However please remember how important our stories are! Starting back with the first
myths about the Dagda, Queen Maeve, Finn McCool and many more who helped shape
our Irish and Irish-American identity. As we move through the centuries the stories of
Napper Tandy, Daniel O’Connell, Tom Clarke, John Devoy, Michael Collins as well as
the charming folktales of 19th century Ireland which have been transplanted into
Appalachian tales of today. We in our local Irish-American groups are missing this aspect
of our shared culture…the stories.
To be fair I have become aware that if an Irish entertainer comes to town everyone may
get interested but why has no one has ever thought to see if there is any home-grown
talent to be appreciated and yet I could name at least several talented local Irish American
storytellers. All of these tellers have Irish ancestry flowing through their veins and can
spin a tale with the best of them and I writing to tell you that they have worked to hone
their craft as well as doing the research to look up and create those stories rather than just
share the local gossip.
One of the reasons I and four others worked on the book Transplanted Shamrocks was
so that YOU in the Irish-American Community could share your stories and though it
took us five years I know there are many more out there but we did what we could and
I’m proud of our efforts.
Now all our Irish groups are great at supporting the dancing, charities and such and
you should but keep your Irish culture well-rounded and don’t leave out the stories for it
was the spoken word as well as the written word that was a major factor in keeping
Ireland’s culture alive during the long years of England’s smothering of shared Irish
culture and if you let the storytelling become a part of your groups’ traditions the stories
will continue to let a more complete Irish Culture survive and bloom in Central Ohio.
I’d also like to see storytelling become something that is passed on to the young ones
coming up for as I heard someone say recently, “We can’t go far…if we can’t remember
where we came from”.
